'The Brave One' -

Full story: Newsday

It can't be easy being Jodie Foster. I mean, how many scripts could have been floating about in which an agile, whip-smart career woman in her mid-40s conveniently loses her husband or fiance in the first 10 ...

I'm surprised no one--not even the Nw York Times--saw the parallel to that most infamous of New York vigillantes: Bernhard Goetz.

This is the most superficial appraisal the film I've yet read.
Perhaps you would have enjoyed the film more if you hadn't slept through it. Certainly you would have been able to address it's themes with some degree of authority, instead of phoning in a glib synopsis.

JESUS JAN!!! Well acording to you there's absolutely no crime on the streets of New York City whatsoever. It's just the perfect Utopia of a City. I can't wait to visit and walk around those perfectly safe, crime free streets and subways at night. Nirvana here I come.
Damn critics. Can't you guys just enjoy a good movie for once and get off your high horse ? How about the directing ? the acting ? the writing ?.........All you can tell us is that crime in New York is a myth ( which is BS ). We're finally getting what looks like some decent looking ADULT ORIENTED movies coming out in the fall after the deluge of utter craptastic teen trash of the summer. I can't wait to see The Brave One. Your review just sounds like typical pretentious "critic-crap" Jan Stuart. Thanks for nothing.

Methinks if the movie were set in Detroit, or Baltimore, anywhere but New York, the review may not have been so thick with contempt. Try a little objectivity next time, Jan.

Yes there are a lot of elements that seemed contrived here but on the other hand the whole matter of whether or how to seek revenge remains a burning one. Especially as it relates to the question of who we really are. Is there a potential killer in everyone of us? What makes certain people cross the line and others not? As the cop in the movie puts it "What would your ex boyfriend think of you now?" Would he know you? The implicit and explicit answer is no. There is misrecognition in the heart of love and misdirection in the handing out of violence. I was willing to overlooking the flaws of this movie because it challenged my views on that other level.

I saw The Brave One with a packed theater, the audience loved the film. Its classic 1970's filmmaking, allowing us to step into a world where we can take up arms against criminals. Kudos to the Taylor team for creating a film with a strongpowerful lead. Jodie Fosetr deserves an Oscar, Terrance Howard is Oscar worthy as well with his performance. Powerful, disturbing and thoughr provoking filmmaking.

Whoever Jan Stuart is, it seems she (I assume) is more interested in promoting herself as a *critic* than giving some serious thought to her real purpose, which is to give an unbiased view of the movie.

Then again, maybe she really is that shallow and has no real credentials to pass judgement on such things. Just like anyone else, everyone passes their peak. Why do we even bother reading their XXXX?

If you liked the movie then great. If not, that's OK because you can't please everybody and life goes on. But lets let the moviegoers be the critics, since we're the ones paying to watch them!

Daily Horoscope for June 2

Leo

This is one of those days when money slips through your fingers in no time at all unless you're very vigilant about your spending habits. Unfortunately, it will be difficult to stop yourself splashing out whenever the fancy takes you, whether or not you can afford it. You're especially drawn to tempting little treats and luxurious indulgences.
