Full story: Vancouver Sun

The Academy Awards are about movies, so when the ceremony regularly gives musicians the short end of the trophy it isn't a news bulletin.

awards shows are not about rewarding the creative

they are about the middle of the road

it's why Elvis' three grammies are for gospel recordings

and none of his innovative work

Award shows are to POLITICAL to really be any kind of fair evaluation. I gave up on them long ago.

Elvis and rock music was so new in the 50s that it was considered a fad-"not legit" so its no surprise that the Oscars had no interest in the music or Elvis's great movies songs from that time.
Jump a head to the early 70s and rock music was starting to get notice and respect by the Oscars.
Its a shame Elvis has never received even an honorable mention at the Oscars for his 50s movie songs which many are considered classic today.

it annoyed me that bluegrass had to wait 80 years to get a grammy category and rap got a category within 5 years

Elvis lived in a different era. Much more reserved in the 50's than now. My mother in law said to me that Elvis was not of her era I told her they were the same age she couldn't believe it. She is a Frank Sinatra fan. I did lend her some of the documentaries of Elvis and she was impressed.Awards are political. Agree with TCB girl.

Elvis was closer to my mom's age than my own. I became a fan in 56 as a mere child. My Mom became a fan of ELVIS when she actually bothered to listen to him in her seventies. Same with my Aunt. They finally opened their ears and took down the mind BLOCK. Mom never liked Sinatra music either and called him skinny and unappealing. She liked Dean Martin (as did I.):)
My dad was a huge fan of Sinatra music.
ELVIS has fans of all ages and even more so as years go by.

I became an Elvis fan as a child, but I was 9 when Elvis died.

Niether of my parents were fans - my Dad liked Folk - Joan Baez, Kingston Trio

my Mom was Beatles and ABBA

after I moved out after university, my Mom became an Elvis fan

I guess she missed me playing his records

my neice, who's 16, is an Elvis fan

Nina did you become a fan before he died or when he died? I know it sounds weird, but a lot of people became fan when he died. Suddenly their interest was peeked about the ELVIS story and why so many people were upset.

Sounds like it took your Mom awhile to come around also.

People are so interesting.

It's hard to say, it's a bit blurred

my first music hero was Hank Williams (Sr)

and I was 6 or 7 when I found out that he was dead - and what that meant

Elvis became my next music hero

I don't know how long I greived for Hank - funny, considering he'd been dead like 20 years before I was born

2 siblings of my Dad were Elvis fans, so I would have been exposed to Elvis

It is odd to me, considering how crisp my memory is for other things, that my Elvis fan origins are blurry

Elvis was the first adult artist I owned records of

I still have them - Elvis in Hollywood, Double Dynamite and Elvis Forever

Nice story, Nina. I understand some bluriness with memories that long ago. I really do enjoy the fan's stories. They are a piece of history.

THE BOTTOM LINE IS THIS
THE READER WAS BY 1000 BILLION TIMES
A BETTER PICTURE THAN WAS SLUMDOGG MILLIONAIRE
BUT BECAUSE OF THE "POLITICS" AND MORE IMPORTANTLY,
THE BULLSHIT LOBBYING...
IT {SLUMDOGG} WILL WIN !!!
ANYONE WHO COULD HAVE SEEN BOTH MOVIES AND STILL PREFERED SLUMDOGG KNOWS 100% OF NOTHING OF WHAT IT TAKES TO DIRECT OR ACT IN A MOVIE.
THERE JUST ISN'T ANY COMPARING THE 2 !!!
THE READER IS THIS YEARS BEST PICTURE BY A LANDSLIDE !!!

Daily Horoscope for January 7

Virgo

You're finally at your best after relaxing and catching your breath for a moment. Now that you're rested, it's time to do some of the things you've been putting off lately. Make a sudden appearance to surprise someone from your past. No matter how many new people you meet, don't forget that old friendships are the glue that holds the relationship cycle together. Keep in mind that a present doesn't have to cost much, as long as it comes from the heart.
