Health club steam room rumors in Manhattan for years before he became really famous. I agree if he's not homophobic then it's not important to out him as with Foley or Craig or Mehlman, but I can't imagine what the big problem is for stars like him. He'd still get roles. It's easy to forget that actors, athletes, politicians do not exist simply to feed our curiosity about their private lives. Consider family relationships that might be severed by such a revelation. As much as Hollywood appears to be a bohemian free-for-all, in reality, actors that come out do suffer in their careers, as those who have done so will be the first to tell you. There is no such thing as gay box office gold.

As I said this isn't the 50s. The sort of people who generally attract interested gossip are wealthy and have options the rest of us can only dream about. It's not about their families - as if the families don't suspect or know - it's about fears of a bigoted public.

However, if I were a journalist I would probably ignore rumors about public figures unless they were taking homophobic positions. But we can gossip in the meantime.

The assertion that money buys happiness is ludicrous. An ultraconservative parent who chooses to live in denial does so not because they might get some cash out of the deal. A sibling that doesn't want an openly gay uncle around their children does not yield when offered a free swimming pool for the backyard.

A major star has more than themselves to consider. There may be several hundred people who rely on their success such as agents, assistants, employees of their production company, security, drivers, housekeepers, etc. Gay actors may be completely open about their lives with friends and business associates, but choose not to address their orientation in the media, even when their sexuality is painfully obvious. Remember Jodie Foster kissing Richard Gere in Sommersby? It looked about as natural as Jodie Foster kissing Matthew McConaughey in Contact.

Another deterrent might be the inevitable 'role model' status that the 'out' must adopt, and the effect it would have on a lifestyle they enjoy. What would the homophobes make of the steam room habits you speak of?

No big names have made the jump, but certainly they have learned from the careers of others: Rupert Everett and Sir Ian McKellen work almost entirely in Europe. Chad Allen usually does single-episode guest appearances on established shows, as well as low-budget indie films. David Hyde Pierce has been working on Broadway since his announcement. Neil Patrick Harris works often in TV, and also does quite a bit of voice work. T.R. Knight, since coming out, works about once a year outside of his duties on Grey's Anatomy, mostly in projects that go straight to DVD. Portia de Rossi lands small TV roles, no big films, but she makes a comfortable living as a housewife, I hear.

The decision to live honestly is irreversible and must be made by each individual. Coming out of the closet and then denying later that you did so is not an option. Ask Anne Heche...if you can find her.
