They changed their teaching about black people (men) being Mormon clergy in '78.
Which, makes me despise them all the more, if there is one thing I hate more than a racist, it's a racist with no balls.
Mormon Dead Jew Baptisms wrote:
"Cult" is no more meaningless a term than is "addiction" or "brainwashing." It might be hard to define, but the warning signs and characteristics are well known. "Cult" might also exist on a sliding scale, like so many things.
Both Scientology and Mormonism in my opinion are about authoritarian control. They also demand lots of money from adherents.
Almost all religious groups are like that.
Mormon Dead Jew Baptisms wrote:
Scientologists have a long record of dirty tricks accusations. Both Scientology and Mormonism have histories of "disconnecting" from people who disagree with the authoritarian teachings or leave the fold. Mormonism has certainly been oppressive of glbt people. That's more than just "vile." None of this is healthy.
And Mormonism's theocracy - which they will deny - is clearly dangerous.
You seem to have a mental block in this area. Are you a Scientologist?
No, it just seems to me Scientology is unfairly picked on because it is a new and minority religion.

Not at all. I'm dealing ion facts, and you are trying to make a comparison that defies simple logic. I'd say you are more interested in Christianity than scientology somehow, as you keep trying to avoid scientology itself.
YOU stated scientology is no worse(in fact actually better by you assertions)than any other religion when you do not even know that actual philosophy of scientology itself.
I said that the beliefs of Scientologists may be wacky, but they are no more wacky than those of Christians.
Gold Mask wrote:
The subject is about Murdoch and scientology criticism. But of course heaven forbid any criticism of scientology should go on without derailment.
<quoted text>
Wrong forum, wrong subject matter. But alas, you are ostensibly here to NOT discuss the subject matter at hand
<quoted text>
And you have the audacity to say "You're just appealing to popularity". What is it you are doing here? You are making statement based on nothing more than an unverifiable testimonials.
You will not address any point I have presented to you in your ongoing crying about Christianity.
<quoted text>
Again, you are making a statement on the basis of, well...nothing other than you are trying to build straw men. You know scientology "beliefs and practices" do you? Coz I tell you, there's a lot to know from start to finish.
You have not a clue, or are a troll or an apologist etc
<quoted text>
Too bad you're not real clever. Scientologists are not waiting for hubbard's return. Hubbard wrote nobody will know him when he returns X amount of years after he dropped his body.
If you rely on Fox News for "fair and balanced", then you'd be blind and following
<quoted text>
It's not. Because scientologists are not awaiting hubbard's return.
You have no idea what you are on about
OK, so they aren't waiting for his return. Guess Christianty is wackier.

A religion is a supernatural belief system.

The term "cult" is a meaningless pejorative applied to religions someone doesn't like.

Yet, you don't even know scientology beliefs and practices and still make comparisons as if you did.Whom is it appealing to authority?

Admit it, you don't know what you are on about and are only here to rabbit on about Christianity.

Dunno, but I *do* know that the largest infiltration into government offices perpetuated on local soil in all of U.S. history was committed by the church of scientology.

I also know that not other 'religion' in the U.S is afforded the same considerations as scientology by the I.R.S.

Get informed before you open your mouth on a subject you know little about.

What's the topic? RM labeled Scientology a "very weird cult". Well, I'm just pointing out their beliefs can't be any weirder than Christianity's, and "cult" is just a meaningless pejorative.

No, not all religious groups try to keep their beliefs secret or to avoid discussing them openly...as is the case with secrecy in Scientology and in Mormonism.

Not all religions have anything near the same history of family members "disconnecting" from or shunning ex adherents via their total community support system.

And most other religions do not sound like science fiction. They might sound like fantasy, but they don't have the science fiction thing going on.

Some authoritarian groups are worse than others. These things occur along spectra.

I have a friend who used to be a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses. They told him he could not remain my friend if I didn't convert. He left them.

Putting 2 or 7 pairs of every type of animal on a boat and staying on that boat for a year sounds like sci-fi to me.

Maybe we should look up "science fiction," then. In "science" fiction there is usually some allusion to technology or science. The story or poem or allegory of the Arc doesn't fulfill this simple, obvious definition.

So the abusive behavior of J. Witnesses means that similar behavior when found in Mormonism and in Scientology does not make them cults? That doesn't follow.

Also, as far as I am concerned, J. Witnesses share many of the same qualities of a cult, as compared to, say, Quakers or mainstream Catholics.

This is all obvious. You have a blind spot. People know what the cluster of qualities which defines or wans of a cult are. It is not a meaningless term, as you claimed.

I also note you select out one distinguishing trait while leaving my other ones unremarked upon.

I mean you can't distinguish between the concepts of "science fiction" and "allegory" and you say to me, "whatever"? Are you twelve years old?

I heard you say that about the word "cult." And I've been listing some of the traits, which are not innocuous. And I acknowledged that as with "modernism" or even "socialism" a strict definition might be difficult due to complexity and because these things exist along spectra.

Cults are typified by personality worship of the leader (Hubbard, Mormonism's board of governing "Prophets,") secrecy about their very dogma, authoritarianism and sexual control, shunning and demonizing by family and community of those who leave as a means of control, paranoia, patriarchy (usually.) You only get the love bomb and sleep deprivation stuff at the furthest extremes.

Daily Horoscope for May 22

Pisces

Things are not always what they seem today, so be careful. Someone might appear to be completely honest but turn out later to have been fooling you in some way. Or a situation may seem quite clear-cut right now but forthcoming events will reveal that things are very different under the surface. So be wary about who and what you believe, and don't let anyone push you into making important decisions today because they may not be in your best interests.
