what an extraordinary comment that olivier is britain's marlon brando. olivier came first and brando isn't worthy of licking olivier's boots. olivier loathed the method approach to acting and considered it far too limiting an approach. his achievements far exceed brando's on stage, in film, in directing and in management. olivier's was a far superior talent, a acknowledged giant in the theatre and in film.

'some consider laurence olivier to be britain's answer to marlon brando'. what tosh!! olivier was first and the greatest. brando wasn't fit to lick olivier's boots. olivier the greatest actor, a great director, a great man, in theatre and in cinema. his record speaks for itself, the evidence is all there. there's no one to touch him.

I don't think that you can compare Larry Olivier with Marlon Brando at all. For a start Brando was a method actor and Olivier was a character actor i think. Laurence Olivier did not have much time for Method acting i have heard and in his book confessions of an actor he said as much. Olivier brought Shakespeare to the masses with his wonderful film versions of Henry V, Hamlet, Richard 111 he also directed, produced them and took the staring roles. His record for stage performances in the classics was very diverse in my opinion. Marlon Brando was a good actor especially his performance in a streetcar named desire with Vivien Leigh. But as a fan of Olivier's i think he was the master and he really knew his onions so to speak, i agree with some of the other comments on this site especially Smiles of Chatham there was no-one to touch him and still isn't well done Larry, it is through you that i was first introduced to Shakespeare and i will always be greatful to you for that.

Gor all of you panning Brando - have you seen his performance in Julius Caesar? He keeps up with that star-studded cast and then some!
