What a nice story. I've always thought that Melanie Wilkes exemplified a woman of noble character.

My photographic essay on the Civil War...

I agree with you on that character assessment.

Easily my most favorite female character in the film.

Sorry, but Vivien Leigh (Scarlett) really did nothing for me. It was always Melanie.

My bad for hitting 'Post Comment' too soon.
Melanie was my favorite - but Careen had spirit (the youngest O'Hara sister). Evelyn Keys as Suellen had style. Vivien Leigh was spoiled; and it was her; out of the three sisters; which changed the most.
One who never changed because she was always perfect? Melanie, played by Olivia de Havilland. A LOT stronger than she looks and a perfect counterpart to Scarlett.
I do wish the two younger O'Hara sisters had more visiblity in the book and the film. But then - the film wasn't about them.
RIP Ms. Rutherford. Mickey Rooney's best co-star (with Judy Garland a CLOSE second). Perfect as Careen O'Hara. A long and fruitful life.
Thank you for your gift.
