Spike Lee speaks to packed crowd at UT's Legends Lecture Series
The advice that filmmaker Spike Lee shared with students at the University of Tennessee Monday night had a familiar echo. He said, in effect: Do the right thing.
Lee talked about the perversity of a trend in the black community that causes some to dismiss academic achievement and celebrate "gangstas." People who do that are "ignorant," he said. While he said the media is responsible in part, he said black Americans need to fight negative imagery in pop culture.
"It's just holding us back," he said.
