I would imagine that the LEM tops ought to have made pretty spectacular, and long, splashes since they weren't all that high up and were traveling at a pretty good clip. NASA has pretty good estimates of the locations since the passive seismic experiments picked up the returns. Going behind the moon for the 29th time, Collins threw the right switches, and with a slight bang the LM backed off, watched sadly by Armstrong and Aldrin. Collins, though, was very pleased to see it steadily disappearing into the distance, taking all its complications with it. The Eagle would continue to circle the moon until it finally joined the other spacecraft corpses on the lunar surface. And from, of all things, Wikipedia: the ascent stages of the Eagle and the Orion (Apollo 16) were the only two left in orbit to eventually impact the surface. The other four were deliberately de-orbited to impact in a timely manner for the benefit of the seismic experiments. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_Lunar_Mod... I had not known any of that. Wouldn't THAT be a find someday?! Indeed! Apollo 12's third stage comes our way in a solar loop every so often...I'm not 100% sure but I think it was photographed recently. I'll go digging for links when I have a minute...unless you fund it first!:)
