Well, this article suggests less of a comparison of the two actors and their performances and more a competition between the two screenplays and their makeup departments. I agree though, that the two Jokers are played almost as two different characters- which makes sense because the two films (Batman and The Dark Knight) are two vastly different films. The 1989 Batman was a popcorn, adventure flick and The Dark Knight is a psychological crime drama... both excel at what they're meant to be, and just as Nicholson's Joker would not mesh well in The Dark Knight, Ledger's Joker couldn't work in 'Batman.' I think Nicholson's makeup looked cool though, not goofy.

With all due respect to Ledger's tragic death, are you really comparing him to Nicholson as an Actor? Are you serious?

I understand that you might want to compare the two characters and again, two diffrent type of movies, but understandable.

But to compare the acting ability - give me a break!!!

Jack Nicholson's joker is... Jack Nicholson. And Jack has been playing Jack for a long time.
Heath Ledger's joker?
Well first he doesn't even vaguely resemble Heath Ledger. Instead you come face to face with a maniacal someone or something that keeps you entranced when he is on the screen and when he is not, you are waiting for his return and craving another chance to witness the perfection of this character.
Again.. Jack's Joker..is simply Jack..
Ledger's Joker is fearless, charismatic genius.

I just came from the movie and it was really really good. Ledger's Joker is the defining rendition of the character. I have never really been too convinced by Nicholson's rendition but Heath Ledger turns in an Academy Award worthy performance that should win and would definitely win if he were still with us. His Joker was terrifyingly evil and convincing--he totally owns the role and it's a tragedy he won't be able to reprise it in another Batman movie. AWESOME is the only word to describe it--he stole the movie from Christian Bale and the special effects (which were very cool) and it's beyond tragic that he's no longer here.

You obviously haven't seen the movie--I have--and you are dead wrong. Go see it and then come back and nibble on the crow you will have coming.

The thing about the two is this:

Jack ACTED like the Joker. Everything was great.

HOWEVER...

Heath WAS THE JOKER. His peformance was so good you didn't realize that was Heath, not for one second of the movie...it was that good.

I do not agree that Heath's Joker wouldn't be good in the 90's Keaton Batman. I believe that his Joker would've actually made that one better. No disrespect to Jack as he is the man, but this time around, this kid Ledger really gave it everything he had and then some. Its just too bad that he wont ever be able to top it although even if he was still around he would've been hard pressed to do so anyway.

It WAS that good--it was amazing! I knew it was Heath Ledger but it WASN'T! It WAS the Joker--a performance of a lifetime! AWESOME!

Jack Nicholson was a Joke. All the first batman movies were jokes. they didn't give Batman justice. But Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, especially The Dark Knight, were absolutely fantastic. Ledger, what can i say, the performance was absolutely perfect and amazing, can't even put it into words. I'm just trying to figure out how they are gonna top this movie with a 3rd. And it sucks that they can't bring the Joker back even though he isn't dead (in the movie). Even if they plan too, they shouldn't. Or else i fill really sorry who has to fill in for ledger. Movie of the year right there, this coming from a Batman fan from birth.

i cant believe that anybody with a brain would possibly look at ledgers "joker" and think, "this. THIS is great acting!"
ledger was terrible in the roll. his character was written horribly, lack of gags, things that make the joker THE JOKER. they tried so hard to make him this unpredictable monster that he became predictable. not to mention the fact that the movie was basically expository dialogue followed by action. this film was very poorly written, it was all over the place. the plot was horribly developed.
this movie looks like what it would be if michael bay make a batman movie

Let's be real Heath Ledger was a great joker, but Mr. Jack Nicholson was better. Yes, Heath's make-up, and story line were better, but purely based on acting Nicholson had him beat, not by much, but his performance was better, the Dark Knight is just a better movie. Ledger's Joker is an extention of Nicholson's he took it and expanded it. These or different times you must take all that in before you say that Ledger was better. The only fact way is to base it purely off the acting and Nicholson won win but Ledger deserves an Oscar he was really good.

I didn't see the last one, but without Jack that movie would have been as horrible as all of the later Batman movies in that set. Michael Keaton was easily the worst actor to play Batman. I kept thinking Mr. Mom while I watched it. Adam West was better! I am looking forward to seeing the Dark Knight. Batman Begins was excellent.

Jack played the comic version.
Ledger played the hard book version. Different time and different levels. Case close.
