Does anyone know the law regarding scooters? Does it have to be registered? Does it depend on the engine size?

Do they make an enclosed version for the winter? I doubt riding a scooter in 17 degree weather will be much fun.

Danger Ahead

If this were the 50' or 60s, I'd say scooters are fine. Although the concept is great to save gas, I just wonder how much riders (or insurance companies) will chalk up in medical bills because I feel there is far too much traffic in and around Stamford (most of CT) for people to be dodging in and out of traffic on scooters.
We left CT in 2002 and the traffic was awful then. I can only imagine what it's like now. Many new scooter owners do not have any riding experience. This is a far too dangerous undertaking. I can also picture all the school kids that are going to talk their parents into getting scooters and probably motorcycles and have a real field day in the parking lots. One last thing - the theft of these scooters will be off the charts unless they're chained down with Titanium chain link locks.

She will definitely regret wearing a dress and sandals when she experiences her first case of road rash. Hospitals will definitely be seeing an increase in business due to this new wave of totally inexperienced riders!! If you're going to ride, at least protect yourself as much as you can with the proper clothing and equipment.

That may have changed when there was the big "pocket bike" fad a few years ago. I am pretty sure you still need to be a licensed driver though. Not sure about any insurance requirements.

That doesn't mean that it isn't made, or can't be done though. Not a bad idea, I'd be interested to see one that is actually rideable and safe. I've ridden right through a Connecticut winter, and with the proper clothing, it actually isn't that bad. Never in snow or ice though, that's just stupid and suicidal. My guess is many of the new "Scooter Gang", will not even attempt to ride through a brisk fall day, nevermind winter. And many will be scared away by good old Fairfield County Traffic, and it's lack of regard for anything two-wheeled.

In the State of Michigan, anything 50cc and under only has to be registered and is given a 3 year tag. If over 50cc. you are required to have a motorcycle license, a license plate, and proof of insurance. You should call your SOS to make sure what your State requirements are or look them up on line. Hope that helps!

Not at all against scooter riding, but I am absolutely against unsafe riding, as shown in this article with the rider wearing a summer dress and sandals. I have been riding for over 50 years, and love it. It's not as much fun as it once was because the dangers have increased way too much. Therefore I am advocating safety, and wearing the proper protective equipment when riding, which yes, does include proper clothing and foot wear. Many falsely think they will not be injured seriously if they fall off their cute little scooter. Many don't realize how badly they can be injured even at low speeds. As I've said, wear what you want, but when you experience your first case of road rash, you will change your mind. Oh, and I don't have a front porch. I probably have more time on the crapper than you have in life!!!!

I am in no way anti scooter! I ride a 150cc scooter myself everyday. I gave info. on laws to ride a scooter in Michigan. How is that anti scooter? I do agree that proper apparel should be worn (boots, helmet, gloves etc.) when ever riding for your own saftey.

valerie, i DID NOT single you out with my comment. it was concerning folks who had stated negatives concerning the growing popularity of people on scooters. such as, let's see how they like it when winter comes, can't wear flip flops, etc.
