#1 - If no plates are required in IN, then it is likely there never was an IN title issued for that scooter.
#2 - You can't file for a lost title if non was ever issued. If there was a title, request for a lost title would have to be done in IN. I doubt IL would process a lost title unless you have a bill of sale.

I bought a scooter last summer in Indiana and was given the certificate of origin with the scooter i asked if it needed to be signed the guy told me no since I did not need a plate on it in Indiana I did not worry too much. I actually live in Illinois and did end up bringing the scooter with me when trying to plate it in Illinois was told I had to get an original bill of sale title etc from original owner. I have called the guy who sold it to me and the guy who sold it to him was told several times the paper work was being processed by the dealer as original owner lost it blah blah blah anyway they never sent me anything and i gave up calling them after 12 times it seemed I was getting nowhere anyway and do not see they will be of any help now or ever. MY MISTAKE! I would like to sell the dam thing but have no title am I able to apply for lost title from Illinois through Indianas DMV through mail without the original bill of sale or original owner who bought it from dealer which I cannot locate or would it be best to try and resell to someone in Indiana where it does not need a plate anyway???? please help debili@comcast.net
I am in almost exactly the same boat. The scooter store I bought my 150cc scooter from is not a licensed dealer. They usually sell 50cc bikes and don't need to be a dealership because 50cc bikes don't need to be registered or plated. I'm in North Carolina and I HAVE to register and plate a 150cc bike but the sellers will NOT provide a title for me even though I paid $100 for the paperwork. I call and call them, email, and email them but NO response. HELP if you hear any solutions!!

HELP!I bought a 150cc scooter from a scooter store in North Carolina,(they are not a dealer), paid $100 for a title, and they did give me a title. I went to the DMV but the title was filled out wrong so I had to take it back to the seller. I tried 3 more times with 3 different titles they gave me,(all of them wetre filled out wrong)I can't get it back from them, no response after many many phone calls and emails AND riding over to the store (they are closed ALL the time). HOW can I get this bike a title and get it legal on the road without the seller giving me a title?(I have a bill of sale)

We see a lot of this happening. More info needed.
Questions:
Was it a new or used scooter?
What was wrong with the titles they gave you?
A scooter store that is not a Dealer?
Were the titles they gave you in your name or their name?

It's a brand new scooter. There was no dealer number even tho I explained they don't need a dealer number because they don't usually sell 150cc bikes and don't need a dealer number with up to 5 sales. The title was wrong because it was not released to me by an "OWNER" of the scooter and they needed to change the title in the scooter store owner's name and THEN transfer it to me. I never heard from them again.

There is something very wrong in this deal. Dealers do not normally have titles for "New" scooters, only used ones. They will issue the paper work for you to get a title and plates, etc, for a new scooter, but that is the extent of it. Titles are issued to individuals not dealers. Sounds to me like you are doing business with a crook. Go to your States Attorney General.

Okay, so I'm rather new to riding (about a year now). Started out with a 2007 chinese 49cc i acquired and operated up until about a month ago as it became to frustrated with it going so slow under my weight. So i stumbled upon a 150cc from a friend of a friend. The thing is he wanted $600 for it but was willing to take $300 down and $100 a month. So i paid the $300 and got a bill of sale, and was told i would receive the title when i paid the rest off (Not smart now i realize) Well, It's been a month so i try contacting the seller to make the first payment only to find out from his father THAT HE WILL BE IN DRUG REHAB FOR A YEAR, and that he borrowed the scooter from his brother and never brought it back!!! All i have is the bill of sale/receipt. Now i believe I'm royally effed out of a ride for now. Sucks, I don't know if this is the right place to comment about this, just kinda needed to vent about it. All i know is I'm not relinquishing the bike unless i AT LEAST get my money back.:C

That sucks! You might want to talk to the local authorities. Laws regarding this type of fraud are different from State to State. If what you are saying is 100% accurate - And the laws in MO are anything like IL -
#1 - You will have to take the guy who sold it to you to small claims Court to get your $300 back.
#2 - The legal owner of the bike has no financial obligation to you
#3 - You do not have a legal right to keep the bike until you get your money back.

Check with your State's DMV. The title is still in your ex's name, so she will probably be the one who will have to process a replacement title via the DMV. I serioulsy doubt they will do it for you.

Laws about titles and registration vary from state to state. I can help you with some lost title issues for a very reasonable rate. Was in the automotive/motorcyle industry for 17 plus years. mail info to: gregory.wayne81@gmail.com

What are the Moped laws in MN. Do you have to have a Title, plates, insurance, etc? I presume you do not have a Title? If that is the case, the first step is go to your DMV office and try to get a title.

I am seriously interested in buying a scooter and Im on a really tight budget and I just found a scooter on craigslist for only $300 but he said the reason why it's so cheap is because he doesn't have the title for it..how much will the title be? what do I have to go through to get it?

Ask your State DMV, not us. The rules for titles is different in different States. If you have read this thread and still buy a scooter with no title, you deserve the legal trouble and hassel you will get!

I have a 2003 Vespa that a roommate bought and didn't register it afterwards. She moved and said we could sell it and keep the money. We have the title from the previous owner, but our roommate's name is on that title as the one it was sold to. How do we sell this thing in WA without a title? Or whats steps will someone have to take in order to buy it from us.

I don't know WA Title rules. You probably should ask the State DMV rather than us.
But I think I can safely say, you have to have the previous owner sign the title on a used vehicle before you can register it or re-sell it.
A legal title is the responsibility of the seller, not the buyer. Anyone why buys a vehicle without a legal Title is a moron.
