Q: My wife and I are considering a scooter to save on transportation costs. It's about eight miles to my job and about five miles to my wife's job, each way.

Comparing price for the scooter alone to get a pay back figure versus gas mileage leaves out insurance savings, parking, and pleasure of the ride. Rather than buying a second car a city dweller should get a motor scooter.

Judged: 1 1 1 With it comes the shame of being labeled a DWU/DUI offender, who are the most prolific scooter riders. |

Judged: 1 1 Thanks very much for posting that link. Lived in LA just outside NO for a mere 7 months (pre-Katrina) and have been looking for more ways to help support locals. Oh. And it's not just city dwellers who can benefit from motor scooters. I'm as remote as can be and it's perfect for quick errands, small shopping and such. Well, it would be, if it ran consistently but that's another story. |

Judged: 2 1 1 Ridin' scooters is just like having sex with a fat woman...sure it's fun, just don't let any of your friends see ya'. |
|
Judged: 4 3 1 Oh yeah, 90% of all scooter riders are often DUI/DWI offenders or have other V&T convictions which prevent them from lawfully obtaining a driver's license and/or insurance. |

Actually a 49cc scooter requires a driver's license too, but not a motorcycle endorsement. |

Judged: 1 1 1 There's nothing wrong with riding a scooter. It is a choice for any individual to make. The problem is that most people in this country look at motor vehicles as some exclamation of sexual preference or inadequacies, compensation for, or in lack thereof, or in this case, assumption of a criminal record, instead of what it most likely is; a choice of thrift and utility. If I had the disposable income, I'd consider purchasing a scooter for commuting myself. |

Judged: 2 2 1 The idea is not practical in most climates, where its too cold or too hot. Having a scooter to use a few days a year may be cool, but then it defeats the purpose of being enviro. Id rather take a golf cart anyway. |

Judged: 1 1 1 It all depends on what State you live in. Some require Motorcycle licenses for 49cc scooters, some don't. Some require a standard driver's license for a Moped, some don't. Always check your State's licensing laws. |

Judged: 2 1 1 You say: "Scooters are often driven by gay 'metrosexual' men. They like their bright lime colored Vespas parked right infront of the designer clothing store." Scooters are also often driven by students, by businessmen and women to and from work, by vacationers, by pit crews and drivers at race tracks, by...well, you name it. To say it is driven mostly by gay metrosexuals and (from another poster) by those with DUI's is just wrong and ill-informed. Oh, and I'm a mature woman. Which one of your small minded categories does that put me in? You say: "The idea is not practical in most climates, where its too cold or too hot. Having a scooter to use a few days a year may be cool, but then it defeats the purpose of being enviro." Well, I can pay my local bills by hand delivering them on my scooter for less than a cost of a stamp. I can go to the beach to watch the whales and actually find a place to park. It is cheaper to dash to the grocery store and back, or the library and back, or take my dog to the Vet, than it is just to start my car, let alone drive it to these destinations. Sure, I can only do this about 8 months out of the year (not a few days) but I'm not guzzling gas for those 8 months. You say: "Id rather take a golf cart anyway." Not street legal, so what's your point? |
