Trooper pleads guilty to speeding, gets $150 fine for 147 mph

I guess some people are more equal than others. You or I did that, we'd be cooling our heels for years and fined two or three times our annual incomes.

Well at least some local bikers are making money on these idoits by selling bright yellow shirts that say,..." I'm not racing, I'm an off duty officer" writeen on the backs.

I find it humorous (actually not so funny) that I just received a speeding ticket for going 12 mph over the speed limit, and I was fined $140, a mere $10 less than this officer. Should this fine of $150 and a simple slap on the wrist be sufficient for such an officer?

I can't imagine anyone going 20 miles over the speed limit and being lucky enough to get off with a $150 fine, let alone going over twice the limit. Any normal person would have had their car impounded and themselves possibly taken to jail for the night.

I recently received a ticket for going 80 mph with a ticket price of $171 - seems like if I were say, perhaps an off duty police officer - my ticket price would have been a bit smaller. I've paid my ticket like a good citizen and will sleep a little better knowing I'm not using the system!

Finally, the other shoe has dropped!

Now to find out if the door will slam on the Trooper that turned his audio off during the traffic stop.

We were taught to respect and look up to law enforcement officers.

My old boss used to talk about how one aw-shoot could wipe out years of atta-boys. The wreckless disregard that this officer showed for traffic laws and for other drivers on the road that day certainly discredits him and will outweigh the good things he may have done as a police officer.

The fact that special courtesy calls were made and that several days elapsed before citations were issued makes the case even more tenuous and paints the entire law enforcement system with the same discredit. This was no judgement call ... we are not talking about 37 in a 35 ... we are talking double the speed limit ... not just speeding but wreckless endangerment ... but for the grace of God there were not multiple fatalities resulting from this joy ride.

If the perp wasnt a cop, it would have been go directly to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $200 ... and expect every applicable charge to be filed. Which brings us back to the original and disturbing question ... why was this situation handled differently?

When do we hear the results of the investigation into why the arresting officer made courtesy calls, delayed issuing citations until consulting superiors, and only cited the least of the possible violations committed?

Oh .. there isnt an investigation of that? Gee, what a shock !!

What do they always say about their being two sets of laws? I just think of how hard they make it on us safe drivers who have to be on the lookout for these wreckless kids on bikes. The drivers need to look on line under 'motorcycle accidents photos' and see what these things can do. I've seen two that were really something. One had a post (maybe a telephone pole?) shoved up his rear and coming out his stomach. Another has some guys head severed completely off, still in the helmet. I don't want that on my conscience, for plowing through one of these guys, while he's acting like a teenager and weaving through my lane. Grow up guys.

This time there WAS an investigation, and the arresting officer was found to be guilty only of "caution."

Excuse me but $150 isn't the maximum fine .You can get fined $125 for 10 to 15 over. Now let's see if the patrol ends this dumb dumb's career like they should.

You're STILL complaining about both officers' fines, suspensions, etc.? First off, the court sets the fines, so they are not getting a break there since you or I would pay the same. Second, they've lost their licenses, which most likely means they'll soon be losing their jobs as well.(It's a little tough to enforce the law or respond to a call in a patrol car when you can't legally drive a vehicle.) So, enough already! Yes, they both screwed up and it makes me sick the way both of these ego-maniacs thought they could mention they were badge carrying law enforcement personnel and get out of a citation. They deserve everything they've received up to this point, and I hope they both lose their jobs. They are being dealt with by the court and I imagine in the days to come we are going to hear about how internal investigations with Gahanna PD and the OSP will deal with them so that it never happens again. Let's move on and quit crying, "If that had been me...blah, blah, blah!"

I agree with the last post. I always thought that 15-20 miles over the speed limit was considered to be reckless operation. And yet they just get $150 fine and 6 months license suspended! I got caught doing 6 miles over the speed limit and my ticket was $150. So does this really seem fair because I sure don't think so. This just goes to show that some people do get special treatment.

just another slap on the wrist! they should make a new law on speeding, call it super speed law, make it a felony.

As a Trooper, he is supposed to execute traffic laws but what happened was that he himself broke the law. A
6-month driver's license suspension is not enough. It should be 1 year suspension.

It's about time cops got caught breaking the law, they all think they are above it.

Apparently, you didn't watch the news Friday night, or read the Dispatch on Saturday. The Inspector General already looked into this at the request of the governor. The OSP was cleared of a cover up.

But why was "caution" necessary. The situation seems very clear-cut. How does somebody qualify for receiving the benefit of this "caution" ... it is a safe bet that the "average citizen" would not get this treatment.

That bothers a lot of us.
