U.S. aerospace industry facing labor shortage

“It won't be painless, and some real adjustments may have to occur”

WASHINGTON -- Roughly a quarter of the nation's 637,000 aerospace workers could be eligible for retirement this year, raising fears that America may be facing a serious skills shortage in the factories that churn out commercial and military aircraft.

'It's a looming issue that's getting more serious year by year,' says Marion Blakey, president and chief executive of the Aerospace Industries Association. 'These are real veterans. It's a hard work force to replace.'

The AIA, which represents aircraft manufacturers and suppliers, has designated the potential skills drain as one of its top 10 priorities in this year's presidential race. And one of the major unions that represent aerospace workers is also aggressively embracing the issue in a rare alliance between labor and management. Read more

You forgot to mention the outsourcing of aerospace engineering jobs to companies in Europe, Israel, China, Brazil, etc. These countries want our Aerospace jobs as they want to build their industrial infrastructure. America and it corporations are only looking at the bottom line and not the long-term implications on our economy and national defense by moving these industries overseas.

I have no pittance for US aircraft companies when Mccain single handed caused 30,000 layoffs because he wants to give our defense business to airbus.
then Boeing sells wichita plant and ONEX suspends 1000 roughly aircraft workers and bar them from re-hiring and our government turns the other cheek to their blatant discrimination. they created their own stupid problem. they want cheap foreign labor- this is what they get...... and our government condones it.

Aircraft companies don't want experienced people. I retired five yrs ago with 30 yrs experience. I am 55 now and looking for part time or 40 hour work week, not 7 day work week and have gotten no response. I even have my own health insurance. explain that one.

I delivered Pizza with a few aerospace engineers.

The cheap labor lobbies propaganda is wearing thin..

Nobody believes it anymore..

I guess the free market only works when it's in the corporate interest.

The law of supply and demand is being used to lower wages by increasing supply.

There is really nothing else to be said about it.

I will continue to actively DISCOURAGE capable Americans from entering STEM fields until this blatent class warfare ends., not that I need much help Americans are fleeing STEM fields in mass.

The labor shortage is their own doing. I worked many years in the production plants in wichita and was continually harrased and bullied by the unions as well as the corporations.(mostly the IAM) I finally left but not until after I exposed them for what they are. No one in there right mind would want anything to do with them. Most people know what goes on in those places and wisely choose to stay away. I applaud the lack of interest in the aircraft industry!
