Impact of the smoking ban

“Knock on wood, our business is just as good, if not better”

The Casino Queen's business is down, and it blames Illinois' smoking ban.

Initially, the $92 million new casino, which opened last summer on the East St. Louis riverfront, saw revenues increase from the smaller boat, but business has declined since Jan. 1 when the state's ban on smoking in public places took effect.

'It's been devastating,' said casino manager Tom Monaghan, who has seen fewer gamblers on the new 'boat in a moat' and fears more are going to new nearby competing casinos across the river in Missouri, where gamblers still can smoke. Read more

I know myself that we have NOT gone out in Alton once since the ban went into effect. At least once a week we get a hotel room close to where we plan to go out in Missouri so we don't have to drive back late. Before the ban we were out in downtown Alton at least twice a week but can't see paying to stand out in the cold or rain while trying to have dinner and or drinks. It's more enjoyable and more practical to drive across the river. I feel for downtown Altons business.

business is down and non smoking is part of the blame....people are staying home for other reasons a well...econmy and the price of gas.

Your such a slave to your addiction that it dictates where you go and don't go. Your mastered by your addiction to the point that you can't even escape it for a few hours. Your grumbling just shows how pathetic you are. I smoked for over 35 years and over two packs a day many of those years and I quite the filthy habit and you can too.
