There's no doubt about it. Measles, a childhood scourge of decades past, is making a comeback.

The strategy seeks to achieve routine measles immunization coverage of at least 90% in every district and to ensure that every child from nine months to 14 years of age receives a "second opportunity" for measles immunization through routine services or supplementary immunization activities (SIAs) every three to four years. The SIAs have proven especially effective. From 1999 to 2003, more than 350 million children throughout the world were vaccinated against measles through SIAs.
As measles wards shut down all over the African continent, a long-term budget item in many hospitals can be freed up to save children from other diseases.
“We now have the opportunity to replicate this successful model as we tackle other child killers such as malaria,” Bellamy said, noting that in late 2004, Togo’s children received four life-saving interventions at once. The landmark campaign reached over 95% of the children under-five with vaccines to prevent measles and polio, mosquito nets to prevent malaria and de-worming tablets.
Millions of children still remain at risk from measles. Malnourished and un-immunized children under five years of age, especially infants, are at high risk of contracting measles and are more vulnerable to death. The vast majority of measles deaths are found in low-income countries. Each year more than 130 million children are born and "we must reach each and every one with measles vaccination," said Dr LEE.
The strong support of the Measles Initiative has been an important factor in the marked reduction of measles deaths in Africa. Launched in 2001, this successful partnership's core founding members are WHO, UNICEF, the American Red Cross, the United Nations Foundation and the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. Since 2001, the Initiative has mobilized more than US $144 million and has helped African countries vaccinate over 150 million children against measles.
Other key partners include the governments of Australia, Canada, Japan and the United Kingdom as well as the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
More details on the global measles mortality reduction, 1999-2003, are available in an article to be published on 4 March in the Weekly Epidemiological Record: http://www.who.int/wer/en/ . Further information on measles can be found in the WHO Fact Sheet entitled Measles: http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/en/ .
Malnourished. Poor water. There's the key. Do vaccines change that?

Yes it does in the case of measles as you can only catch it from another human who has it. Poor nutrition and water quality are irrelevant in catching measles although they do make it harder for people to recover. Immunise everyone and measles will be extinct within a few years just like smallpox was.

People who make the claim of water and toilets don't know how foolish they are when they say that. As if the recent out breaks occurred in major cities which had no clean water and were malnourished.
The only way to avoid contracting a virus aside from preventable vaccines is live in a bubble with no human contact. Those who are exposed to it will contract it, as nicely demonstrated in the recent outbreaks and the California deaths of infants.

Too simplistic. People don't simply complain about nothing. There's something wrong with vaccines. Why should the USA government have to save producers from being litigated out of business? Why are they found at fault over and over? Why do they need a compensation program and a vaccine court? Why do they newed blanket protection from lawsuit? Answer those questions Marky.

Problem is. vaccines have been established and even when they kill and damage people, its ignored. Finding better ways to allow children to have these viral illnesses and gain natural immunity is far healthier for children and society as a whole. What California deaths are you talking about, and what other issues did they have? Were they vaccinated previously?

I'd love to educate people, but if you're not from the United States, hardly see the point. Viruses kill. We know that they do. Ignoring that fact kills others not matter how clean the water is and how often you flush.

Viruses kill. We know that they do. Suggesting a natural exposure is like asking for dead babies, like the ones in California. Ask those parents what natural exposure is like.

You are being too simplistic. Because B occurs after A does not immediately mean that A caused B. Because the first signs of autism occur around the same time kids are getting vaccinated does not mean the vaccines caused it.

You can just as easily blame autism on childrens TV programming or eating solid food - both of these occurred just prior to their illness expressing itself.

Autism is a neurological condition & these conditions have a habit of occurring at specific periods of a persons life. Autism around 2yo, schizophrenia in teen years and alzhimers over 60. Of course there are individuals who fall outside these periods due to natural variation.

How do you explain the existence of autism and other illnesses claimed to be caused by vaccines prior to vaccination?

The medical system is in a no win situation. If 3 out of 5 children died from illness before age 5 like they did before 1900 parents would be demanding to know why the medical system isn't doing something about it. Now only a fraction of one percent of kids die and dickheads like fbumber are still complaining.

"Several plaintiffs have tried over the years to bypass the Vaccine Court for what I consider to be obvious reasons: More money"

This is the category fbumber would be in: More money, that's had he been a United States citizen. That's why he keeps trashing this country, his country has no compensation at all. That would equal fbummer4him.

I think it is more than just money in some cases. Due to anti-vax propaganda people are often making claims at the vaccine court for their kids genetic conditions - conditions they inherited from their parents and could not have been caused by vaccines. Its natural for most people to not want to believe they are responsible for harming kids, especially their own so they look for a scapegoat. I am surpised that unfaithful wives don't claim that vaccines were the cause of their kid being a different ethnicity to her & her husband (I should copyright that idea!).

Short of having a 'Gattaca' style DNA testing/correction regime humans will sometimes produce kids with genetic illnesses.

The worst are the complete wackjobs like Scheibner who claim that diseases like whooping cough are only contracted via vaccination. This is so easily disproven by a quick google search showing epidemics of the disease in the pre-vaccine 16th century: http://lib.bioinfo.pl/pmid:10447027 Somehow in her 25 years of resesearch she overlooked something that took me 2 minutes to find. Yet she is classed as a leading anti-vax expert???

"I pity the fool" who believes in anti-vax BS.

Get with the times Mark. The Genome Project and current genetic research has found these kids have mutation that doesn't originate with their families and parents. So stop saying its genetic..you are wrong!

http://www.cosmosmagazine.com/news/3489/dna-s...

A consortium of hundreds of scientists said they had uncovered dozens of previously unknown genetic mutations that contribute to autism in children.

Some of these rare DNA glitches are inherited from parents. But many, the researchers discovered, arise for the first time in the person with autism.

"This suggests that tiny genetic errors may occur during formation of the parents' eggs and sperm, and these variations are copied during creation of their child's DNA," said co-author Daniel Geschwind, a professor at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).

So according to the above its either inherited or occurs during prenatal development.

Out breaks in major cities today occur in the vaccinated. I guess you forgot to mention that.
