This is a blog about Brandon Raynor campaigning against massage regulation in the USA and Canada.
He travelled around from state capitol to capitol protesting against the unnecessary regulation of the massage industry.
Massage regulation started in 1947 in Hawaii as an attempt to stop Native Hawaiians practicing traditional lomi lomi massage as the people maing the law didnt like what they considered "heathen' methods of healing. this is because in hawaiian culture chants and spritual practices are used in the massage.
Modern day campaigners to regulate the massage industry similarly try and restrict massage therpay to just being practiced by people trained in one particular approach to massage, being the scientific approach to Swedish massage.
Similar to when the Australian government took children away from Aboriginal people and put them in mission schools or when the British outlawed Ayurvedic medicine in India

No, massage regulation came about in the 40's as massage therapist tried to distinguish themselves from prostitution. Regulation is also to protect the consumer from fraud and harm. Why don't you stay down under and leave the U.S. alone.

The US has a lot of freedom loving people in it and many people are really glad to have me sharing another perspective on the issue
Many Americans are way more intelligent than you are and like to hear perspectives of how things are done in other countries. Many people actually consider that they have things to learn from people from other countries. Some people like yourself obviously prefer to be ignoramouses. In Australia we call people like that rednecks and predjudiced arrogant stupid people. Hopefully one day they will be a thing of the past.

And by the way this forum is in cyberspace which last I heard was not actually part of the US anyway.
It's an international forum where people have freedom of speech something that one would think Americans would have some familiarity with.

I am an aussie working in australia now for two years - I have only studied the Brandon Raynor Technique and have had no other experience. Since completing the course I have had fantastic results from my clients both physically and emotionally, my practise is completely full and I can no longer take on any more clients who frequently call to put their names on waiting lists! I'm constantly being told that I am changing peoples lives! People have never experienced massage before like the Raynor technique and are amazed by the results - if only years of training in regulated colleges could get the 1/2 the results, the world would be a greater place.

I applaud Brandon in his activities and efforts. He works and provides outstanding training to those he teaches. I would not say this if I did not know. I speak the truth.

I live in Saint Petersburg, FL. I do not want to lead this into what is and what is not an American, although I do announce my Cherokee lineage.

If one has not taken a class offered by Brandon, I suggest you get involved in a class and learn something. For one to sit back and refuse to learn provides nothing to the individual who only seeks to serve his or her ignorance. It furthers helps no one here to argue with someone that refuses to learn and stand on fully justified reasons for his or her arguments.

Oh, by the way, this message goes specifically to Brandon, but others should employ this technique as well, when you add your links to your messages, help your server out by placing the FULL link in there, adding the trailing forward slashes!

http://www.thefreedomride.org/

I'm not familiar with this blogging machine, but it appears to grab the link after traveling to it but perhaps there's a hidden scripting engine here that Brandon knows of.

Just in case, for those that do not know, it's always best to identify the full link, as many servers use redirection to prevent the default named page from displaying itself. The default page names vary from one server to another and it never does anyone any good (except the programmer of the page) to display the default page name (default.asp, default.aspx, index.php, index.pl, index.html, index.htm, et al).

I took the Brandon Raynor massage course in October of last year in Melbourne, and have since had massive success. My sister has a diploma in remedial massage (2 yrs uni) and gave me a leg up when I first started practising by referring some of her clients my way. That stopped very quickly as none of them came back. My sister now incorporates some of the Brandon Raynor techniques into her massages and achieves even greater results. 8 months down the track and business is very steady (20-30 clients a week) and I charge nearly double what my sister charges!
Like LMT stated "Like you, they don't know what they don't know." If you have never had a treatment by a 'Raynor Therapist' you would have absolutely no idea what your on about, its so
far beyond the text book 2 strokes of this and 3 strokes of that bullshit that conventional institutions ear bash you with. My sister was twice the practitioner before she went to school and learnt how to loose her intuition and replace it for textbook jargon!
I do feel for you people though, I would be extremely bitter if I wasted 1-2 years of my life on learning every fibre in the human body in Latin just so I could hold a conversation amongst my peers who wasted their time to learn it with me. Find yourself a Raynor Therapist and have a 'proper' massage, and world would most likely be a better place for you..

I too took a Raynor Diploma course (last August), prior to that I had worked as a University lecturer in Education teaching postgraduates so my comments are from two directions.
First the massage: Like many of the above contributors, I now have a thriving practice and a waiting list for new clients as my diary is completely full. I could give anonymous case studies; the guy who couldn't walk properly as the muscles in his feet had pulled his toes under - now walking completely normally after those muscles were released; the guy with a degenerative illness whose lung capacity has increased after receiving Raynor massage; a woman who no longer has pins and needles in her fingers constantly from her neck being so tight that it was over-stimulating the nerve. I could go on, and on. This massage works - if you haven't tried it - don't knock it! Some of these blogs suggest Raynor therapsits can only work on their own, I also work in chiropractic clinic 2 days a week - an extremely regulated industry and with a foreward looking, highly experienced senior chiroptactic doctor who wants the massage for his patients because it gets results.
Secondly there are criticisms about the teaching style: as a published educationalist I can state that the action learning model of teaching the Raynor school uses is highly respected in the wider world of Education and is seen as one of THE best ways to acquire knowledge and skills. All of us should be life-long learners and that is very much encouraged on the course, a good course will leave people with a hunger to keep on developing, its something I have done - but anything I have studied has only been able to accompany my Raynor training, never has this training being surpassed.
You asked for student testimonials - maybe now you should go, with an open as mind as possible, and receive a Raynor massage?

My first course in massage was with Brandon Raynor
in California. I did a 100 hour study with him.
I was living in Montana at the time and was finishing my course work in traditional naturopathy.
I began my practice in Montana right away and
became completely booked up within 6 months and
began using waiting lists. His technique and
principles I found to be very good and effective.
His practical and "uncluttered" teaching method is
very valuable.
After moving to Arizona a year later, I had to
wait to begin my massage practice here because of
the state regulations. I finally decided to go
through a course of study in Arizona to get my
Arizona license. I appreciated my study here and
used the time to continue to learn more from my
new teachers and on my own. I did feel that the cost was excessive. Then I began my
practice here and it has built up well in less
than a year even with a lot of competition and a
massage savvy society. I still have found
Brandon Raynor's techniques to be extremely
helpful in my current practice and I do believe that they have helped tremendously with the
growth of it. Clients have thanked me for the
help they have received which are largely from
my studies with him.

I did the Brandon Raynor Diploma course in UK in July 2005 and have never looked back. My Clients come back time and time again and my friends and family no longer go elsewhere for treatments. Once you have experienced this kind of massage you would not go anywhere else.

It's not always fully true that people are ignorant. They just may be prejudicial in their statements and thoughts, or it might be because they drank too much of that patented Aspartame sweetener that is now confirmed, after the Bush and Rumsfeld patents wore off, that Aspartame causes ADD and ADHD when pregnant women drink Aspartame loaded drinks that were left in the sunny unaircondonditioned vehicles. It's not the fault of the individual born to a mother who drank NutraSweet drinks while pregnant. The United States Government still seems to want to keep this a secret.

It literally killed over 40,000 United States Soldiers during Gulf War I when Rumsfeld AND Bush both DEMANDED the United States Army ship DIET COCA COLA and DIET PEPSI to Iraq during Gulf War I. The soldiers who drove the tanks there said the temperatures inside the tanks reached over 150ºF and that the diet soft drinks were left in the tanks. George Bush and Donald Rumsfeld then LIED about what they did and blamed the death of over 40,000 American Soldiers on something they called Gulf War Syndrome.

I met one of the soldiers who came back with Gulf War Syndrome and he told me the United States government wanted to cover it up. He died a couple years after I talked to him. His family, his kids, his wife lived in Tampa, FL at the time. The kids grew up without their father. I speak the truth. I, unlike Bush and Rumsfeld, have nothing to hide and no need to lie in any way.

I've contacted Betty Martini. Many young people do not know her. She is now Dr. Betty Martini. In the early 1990s Dr. Betty Martini sent out an email message to millions of people. She explained that Aspartame caused many harmful effects upon those that consumed it. Practically everyone that first used Windows 3.1 came to know her. Many may have received one of her letters. She confirmed and still to this day maintains that Aspartame is a very dangerous chemical concoction that should NEVER be heated up. She confirmed that Aspartame turns into formaldehyde and methanol when it gets heated, even simply by leaving a can of Diet Coca Cola in a car on a hot summer day.

It's furthermore published in various places that Aspartame CAUSES (and is the ONLY reason for) ADD and ADHD (attention deficit disorder). My apologies go to out to everyone that did NOT know the truth and I hope you did NOT learn about this only from myself. Good luck and my best wishes to everyone.

I have just completed Brandon's Diploma course in Brisbane, and was extremely impressed with the teaching style, methodology, and results from the massage.
For myself, I have had a very bad lower back which put me in tears on several occassions due to the severity. This is due to an old motorcycling injury, but it was agravated badly in January along with 28 international flights this year alone. I have had massage treatments from Chinese Acupressurists, Traditional Thai Massage (On a Traditional Thai Massage course in Thailand) and finally Brandon Raynor Style massage during the course. This is hte only one that has improved my personal situation.
My fiance also completed the course with me (she's been practicing Swedish, Sports and Remedial massage for 2 years) and she had an emotional experience, which if I didn't know her or see it for myself I would have been very skeptical as I would have thought it may have been a 'plant' for the course, but no. I am very mechanical in my understanding, I find it very hard to understand what I can't see or touch. This has changed me.
So for those who don't believe or understand, please don't decry, either come and partake in a course, find a practitioner and have a massage sit back in your black hole and let the world go on around you. Don't block those that can and do.
All power to your elbow (and fingers) Brandon, nice one mate.

As someone who actually SERVED in a medical capacity during the Gulf War, I can tell you that your hypothesis is pure BS. Gulf War Syndrome was caused by the soldiers and Marines being issued Pyridostygmine Bromide (PB) blister packs as a precaution in the event of a nerve agent attack. They were specifically warned and ordered not to begin taking them until and unless the alarm was sounded that a nerve agent attack was under way or imminent. Instead, they ignored medical advice and a direct order and began taking massive amounts of PB like it was candy, then lying about losing the PB in order to get more.
We also had a problem of sand fleas and desert scorpions in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq. So the troops would spray 55-gallon drums of malathion (a cholinesterase inhibitor) around their tents and living areas to kill the fleas and scorpions. It was a perfect recipe for disaster. The combination of extremely high doses of PB and exposure to extremely high doses of malathion was what caused Gulf War Syndrome, not some fantasy about hot Kool-Aid.

I'm not convinced that any Raynor graduates know the true effects of what they are doing. The extremely deep-tissue "Rolfing" technique should only be employed by someone who has a thorough understanding of the underlying nerves, blood vessels, lymphatic channels, tendons and muscles. You need to know the endangerment sites and why (and how) to avoid them. You need to be able to envision the underlying anatomy and palpate your way around and into the fascia without tearing nerves, blood vessels and lymphatic channels. 100 hours of study won't get you to that point. You are all VERY lucky that you have not seriously injured a client with your lack of medical background.
