Modern drugs go through 10 to 20 years testing and development before reaching the market. Even then there maybe some section of the wider community that the drug can cause problems with which is why doctors report back all side effects no matter how small. This can lead to a change in usage or even withdrawal of the drug. Compare this to homeopathy which was founded on a non-scientific implausible notion and hasn't changed since.

"And of course rather than sticking to a sensible debate you go off ranting about heroine and cocaine."

Just making a point that popularity does not equal effective or safe and this reflects badly on the US medical system if policy decisions are being made based on popularity rather than evidence.
