What an experience dont want to do that again. After drinking 3 bottles of that iodine and then the IV. The actual CAT took only 8 minutes, but they need to warn you about how your body will react to the solution. They also told me that more blood work was ordered, one was for PT, and the other was 1, 25 & 25D???? They have already done the parasite test and 6 other tubes of blood test. I will find out Wednesday the results, fingers crossed not bad news. The Doctor said he felt a fullness on the left side of my stomach and did not want to worry me, but one step at a time. Finger crossed not bad news. Doctor also told me to stop taking any medication.
Stay tuned.

No joy, could not locate my appendix on the CAT scan??? Everything looked good, all test negative, no loss of blood, white cells look good. Sending me to GASTRO for upper and lower check. Feel like a pin cushion.

The teeth grinding at night, extreme fatigue, stomach grumbling, and diarrhea are also very likely signs of parasites. You need to go to a specialist to really get a good test done. My doctor had me do a stool test that was shipped to California because the average lab doesn't pick up most parasites.
I don't inderstand how zoloft would help your stomach???

I tried to post a response a few different times over the last few months but kept checking here for it, and it never showed up. So I'll try again.
My doctor never believed it could be a parasite with me, because I hadn't travelled. I told him I had been drinking water from a cooler that smelled moldy (as soon as I figured it out after I had been sick for two months or so), and that I had unsafe oral-anal sex about two weeks before the onset. He dismissed both factors.
I had probably about 5 stool samples over the course of seven months (they need to be done every day for five days, I think), a barium enema, CT scan, many blood tests. They found diverticulae pouches, but they were not inflamed. My colon was irritated, but that was an effect, not a cause.
I ended up going to emergency two days in a row - I was desperate, as it had been seven months, and all of the symptoms were piling up and getting worse. I was thinking I'd have to shut down my business. They gave me a five-day course of metronidazole at emerge - "a shot in the dark", they said - I knew this was what they prescribed for Giardiasis, so I was very hopeful that it would help.
It did - day 2, no diarrhea, but the third day, I felt incredibly nauseated and anxious. My family doctor put me on Apo-Chlorax, a combination sedative and anti-spasmodic. I finished the Metro and kept on the Apo for the next two months (late July - mid-sept.).
I did notice a few things and had many hindsight lightbulbs go off - maybe this will help some of you.
I continued to lose weight, even after the antibiotics. This could have been stress-related. I was lactose intolerant through most of September, even though I had no more diarrhea.
My stool was still ill-formed and foul-smelling and fell out of me, but only in the morning.
During the seven month illness, whenever I ate fried foods or dairy products, I felt sick to my stomach, cramping immediately, and couldn't eat more than a few bites. I know these are foods that trigger IBS, but it never happened before - and hasn't happened since.
My husband and my best friend were convinced it was all in my mind, and my doctor felt the same. Then they told me I must have anxiety (try waking up to diarrhea every morning for seven months and see if it doesn't make you anxious!) which is why I think he prescribed the Apo.
My last follow-up appointment, my doctor told me the antibiotics must have had "a placebo effect", which, sure, could be possible... but, really? I know IBS comes on anytime and stress is an instigator, but I had no stress when this started - plenty getting towards the end, but not at the onset.
And, no bowel problems now. None.
I suggest anyone who is going through this, and hasn't travelled, should see a naturopathic doctor. They have highly advanced tests for parasites. I'm not quite sure why a doctor in North America believes you can drink all the contaminated water you want and not get sick, or that oral/anal contact is safe if you're married (of course, I have since changed my habits around that, and I still think my husband is an asymptomatic carrier) but listen to your body and don't let anyone minimize what's happening. If your doctor is determined to gaslight you (make you think your mental health is creating the problem), see someone else, immediately.
There is a duodenal string test for Giardiasis that is supposed to be very accurate, but was not available to me.
I should also mention that people I knew who'd had it and doctors who are clients of mine all said "it sounds like giardiasis" without prompting - and they thought this because of the 6 am early morning diarrhea.
Good luck, everyone, I wish all of you the best and am so sorry for your misery. I've been there and look back on it as the worst nightmare of my life.

I'll keep it brief - I am so sorry for everyone's continued misery and pain.
I did a 5-day course of Metronidazole last year in mid-July which stopped the diarrhea day two. Day three, I was very nauseated and my doctor precribed Apo-Chlorax (anti-spasmodic/sedative), which I was on until late September. I told my doctor I was weaning myself off them, he told me they had cured me, and that the antibiotics only had a 'placebo effect'. I guess the herbal therapies I tried and the vitamins I took weren't viable placebos! Either that or I just wasn't ready to be well again (?).
BE PERSISTENT with your doctor, or go to a naturopathic doctor. For some reason, my GP refuses to believe that in North America, contaminated water or unsafe anal/oral sex can make you sick. I disagree. There were no other risks or factors with me.
IBS is stress-based. Do not let your doctor try to gaslight you (tell you it's all in your mind) because that is extremely stressful. The stress of having this for seven months did make me anxious, toward the end, but that was an effect, not a cause. And most of that came from lack of support and understanding, and getting sicker and sicker.
I didn't know it at the time, but I became lactose intolerant, and this happened early in the illness and lasted well into September. I also continued to lose weight until October.
Doctors and clients of mine all said, without prompting, "sounds like Giardiasis", specifically because of the early morning diarrhea. Without being alarmist, I had to agree that I had all of the symptoms - with me, it just went horribly chronic. Probably my immunity was low at the time.
Best of luck, everyone, I look back on this as one of the worst nightmares of my life.

Everyone nowadays thinks that gluten is the problem with all health disorders. If you actually have this problem, then I'm sorry. I personally know three celiacs, and seven other people who were misdiagnosed. It is a problem that is not fully understood in the medical community, and as such, is being misdiagnosed wildly.

I have chronic morning diarrhea..painless, but explosive. Usually from 6:30ish until 10:00 AMish. Imodium chewables are amazing. I carry them in my purse at all times. I notice certain foods make it happen in the afternoon, like greasy foods. In the evening I eat rice and some carrots pretty much every night. For lunch I have crackers.

The only thing that has helped is a mild antidepressant. I take 20 mg. of Celexa daily.

I've been to doctors and they say its stress related, which would make sense because it doesn't happen on weekends when I'm not working. If I have a stressful week at work I'll lose 3-4 pounds..very common for me. But I've accepted it.

Well, i guess it's time for me to go back to the Dr. I had all the morning symptoms, stopping on the way to work to go to the bathroom, going 2-3 times in the morning. Then i would be good the rest of the day.
I lost some weight, started working out, stopped drinking caffeine alltogether and my problems were significantly reduced.
No, out of nowhere, it's back, as bad as ever, but only in the morning. I've got to drive a friend to the airport in the morning and I don't know if i'll make it without having to stop. I just started taking Acidopholis 2 days ago and haven't seen any change yet.(i'm a 39 year old male and have battled this for 20 years)

Hi all,

It sounds like many of you have really been put through the loop with tests, etc to figure out what is going on. I am a 21 year old healthy female. I've had chronic morning diarrhea for almost a year now. It all started when I went through a horrible break up. I believe it is totally due to stress. I recently went to the doctor who I told about my problems (horrible gas/pain/diarrhea) in the mornings. He said this is a very common symptom for IBS/spastic colon. He suggested peppermint capsules, yoga to reduce stress, and put me on Hyomax an anti-spasm drug. So far it seems to be helping the pain issue. Has anyone else been put on this hyomax for IBS?

lol...Thank God I'm not the only one. A cure would be nice though. Had my GB out in 2000 and after a couple of years of the morning ritual my doc said to try fiber pills to bulk it but it didn't work. Now I have three kids and if I have a coffee on the way to the store with them we all have to run like mad to the bathroom so Mommy will make it to the bathroom. I was thinking about calling my doc but it sounds like there's nothing to fix it....
