I am 30yrs old and am also having pain in left rib cage.I went today for an ultrasound, chest and rib xray were fine. My DR. did advise that pain in that area is usually spleen related however any organ in stomach can cause pain to radiate.

Wow. I have this same problem. The pain is right where my ribs come together at the middle, at the bottom, just to my left. If I lay my arm across there and hold it tight with the other arm, the discomfort goes away. I've thought about wrapping a belt around my chest just to be comfortable.
This sucks...

Me too. Almost a year, every test. I am on antibiotics now because I tested positive for h.pylori which is the bacteria that causes ulcers and other things but 5 days in and no relief yet. I guess I will keep pursuing it but it just feels like inflamation of some kind. Some days good, then hurts for a few days running. I'd love to see some people post their diagnosis.

I may have a similar condition. It started out as a sort of cramping dull ache on my lower abdomen right above the hip bone. It usually comes and goes at random and doesn't seem to coincide with eating. Now for the past month and a half the dull cramping/ache has moved up to right below the lower left rib, kind of more towards the back. Sometimes this dull ache makes me nausious.
My urologist believes I have prostatitis which is also causing some frequent urination, however I don't believe it is the cause of my abdominal pain.
I had a CT scan of abdomen/pelvis, urine tests and even a colonoscopy to check for colitis/devirticulitis, but so far everything has come back negative. I was never a hypochondriac, but not knowing what the hell is causing this has turned me into one.

i agree.
there is something about gluten, starch or carbohydrates related to my symptoms in left abdomen.

i tried the 'candida diet' for a while, and symptoms disappeared. no more strange feeling on left side, no more hollow sucking shivery feeling, no more 'swelling' or tender lower left rib, no more severe burning or stabbing pains in general abdomen, no more bowelproblems.

i found hope!

when experimenting with introducing foods again, i notice bread etc is the worst trigger, and too much potato second.

i recommend avoiding grains and dairy for a cpl of weeks to see if symptoms get better.
+ researching alkaline diet, candida/anti fungal diet, and see if it seems relevant to you.

+ eat real food and chew it well, at regular hours.

(and ofcourse avoid artificial 'foods'. eat clean and real food.)

we will understand eventually, reverse it and get healthy :) best wishes to you all.

well I might have a solution for you, it seems to have worked for me!!!
After suffering with this pain for a a number of years with no real answers from the doctor. I decided to try a change of diet as I had also read somewhere some of the symptoms I was experiencing could be down to glutten intolerance so I tried a glutten free diet.
After being on it a number of weeks I noticed a vast improvement and since being glutten free or as best as I can be as it is tough to keep to it completely I have not had a reoccurance and do seem to have more energy.
Not saying it is the answer for everyone but it is worth a try as the doctors dont seem to have any other ideas

Wow, that's a lot of people with the same problem. I'm sure there are tons more that just haven't posted.

I have the same problem. Pain on the left side just below my ribcage. Sometimes the pain radiates to my back as well. Or maybe it's starting in the back and going around to the front I don't know.

I've found that massage helps a little bit, which leads me to believe it's a back problem.

I have the same symptoms. A pain in the lower left rib towards the center of the chest. It really doesn't hurt very much but is more irritating than anyting (a sharp pain for about 1 second). I also feel what seems like swelling, bumps or fluid under the skin. I've felt my right rib in the same area and this swellin or types of bumps were not found at all. I'm going to the doctor next week as it's driving me crazy bacuse I've had it for the last 6 months and thought it could've been a muscle tear from working out. Does anyone have the same symptoms or idea what this is???

might want to check out lyme and chronic lyme related complications... i have been dealing with similar issues for over 5 years... diagnostic tests for lyme are suspect at best, providing lots of false negatives... ck out page 9 and 10 of the following link... hope this helps.. good luck

I have pain in my right lower rib. I bothers me when i reach back to wipe myself after a bowel movement. At one time years ago when I had gall bladder surgery, the doctor told me I had diverticulosis. Last year I had several sessions of severe pain in the lowere rib area. My physician told me to continue taking doses of senekot and keep my bowels open. I still am concerned and although I have bowel movements every other day I know my bowels are'nt completely emptied. the consistency is like glue so there is a great deal of cleanup each time. Woe is me

Hi all,

Do any of you experience a burning feeling on the rib/abdominal muscle attachment point?

I've been having the same symptoms, only mine is on my right side, just near my sternum. The only conclusion I can come up with is that I severely strained the muscle while laying on my side too long, while recovering from ankle surgery (that's when the pain started).

Whether overweight or not (I'm in pretty good shape) have any of you laid on your sides - while sleeping, watching tv, etc?

If so, you may have inadvertantly torn your muscle like me.

Glad to see Im not alone here. I have had a pain/discomfort in the "pit" of my stomach for months now. Its pretty constant. Also I have an occasional pain under left ribs and then another lower left abdomen to the left of my navel radiating to my left side.

My doctor has decided its a gastric problem (possibly an ulcer) I did have the pylori bacteria and was treated for this. She has now taken blood for tests on liver, kidneys etc etc.

Just wish it wasn't such a slow process.

Hi'
About 4 weeks ago I started having accute pain in my left side about 2 inches below my left ribs. The pain only happens when I move a certain way,my ribs are not sore and I don't feel pain when tha area it touched but if I cough, laugh sneeze anything like that or some movements like bending or turning my body sideways it's like a knife stabbing me and I can't bear it, the pain is quick thank heaven but I'm afraid to move but I have to. I had an ultra sound scan showed nothing wrong. My doctor thinks because I had pneumonia around the same time I have hurt a muscle but I've had sore muscles before and nothing like this pain. I'm araid to drive as that hurts too, can anyone suggest anything,
Thank you. Joan.

Hi' all,
I have stabbing pain like a knife in my left side about 2 inches below my left ribs more to the centre. I have no tenderness when I touch that area and my ribs are not tender but when if I move the wrong way, sometimes just sitting, standing or if I cough, laugh or sneeze things like that it's like a knife stabbing me. I've never felt pain like it and I've been through a lot. My right lung removed cause of a benign tumour, I have bladder cancer and recently had pneumonia but this pain started just before the pneumonia. I had an ultra sound scan which showed nothing. I am at my wits end as this pain comes so suddenly if I move the wrong way, I can't drive or do much without the stabbing pain. My doctor just says it's a muscle but I've had sore musles in the past being an ex ice skater and nothing like this.
Would an MRI show if it's a tendon or nerve does anyone know.
Thank you,
Joanelaine

MRI should show soft tissue. CT scan with contrast does too... i hope you figure out what is wrong. I can imagine that it feels horrible wondering if something is wrong and not able to know exactly what. Good luck!

for several months i have had left sided rib/tummy pain extending over to right ribs. It is getting me down now as no doctor has made any clear diagnosis and the pain is there all of the time anyone out there with any answers !!!!!!
I have that pain and without mentioning what caused it,I will say it is terminal for me.Now I have pain on left side though and been once to doc and prescribed pain meds but side effects and pain still remain.

I have pain in same area, but it's a constant ache pushing outwards towards the stomach.I also was dianogis with newtranis.I am not spelling that correct. But its a pain that feels like a sunburn.Connected with nerves coming off the spine,it goes from the back and around to the front of my chest. The meds perscribed caused side effect,a rash so far.But also can cause heart condition.I need to go back to doc.Sorry I could not spell that word but if the description helps, then your welcome.

I have been getting similar pain on my left sided lower rib. It just feels tender to touch and sometimes when it is really bad it also hurts in my left arm pit.
It normally accompanies lots of burping and stomach gurgling.
im getting this too. lower-mid left pain below ribs, like a gurgling, sometimes it feels like the kidney is swollen. what has helped?
1. probiotics (they seem to encourage bowel movements)
2. cipro (antibiotic -- dont like taking this but it does help)
3. stool softeners --again, not good to take these.
none of these cured the condition, and docs havent helped much. i dont wanna do all these tests but i may have to. feels like a heartbeat down there too.
if anyone figures this out, let me know!
