all this talk from Democrats about health care refrom and no mention of tort law reform which would address medical malpractice claims. why, because those fools in Washington are all attorneys. legislation curbing the amounts in settlements would help the medical profession and health insurers. another positive effect would be limiting fees collected by these ambulance chasers...let them be the dying breed, there are too many attorneys for sure, and encourage our docs. to stay in business.

We'll just sue who's left until none are left. We can do it because we give all our money to the Democrat party and they write laws that allow us to drive costs up in the Medical industry. Simple.

This topic gets discussed every couple of years along with the shortages of nurses....

This is what happens when you live in a an area that has a high cost of living and doctors who feel the pressure to be like the joneses..

$175K in pay is nothing when you consider the hours and the risks...funny how this country will pay TENS of MILLIONS of dollars to CEO's who run this country into the ground.

Insurance companies are to blame also, they do the same business model that has made them very profitable..charge the patient high fees pay out the least amount. The have whole departments dedicated to focusing on paying out the least amount of money per patient.

Amazing, goverment will step in to bail out the greed of wall street but will do little to work with the average American facing real issues.

I have found CVS minute clinics (for small fee) and Walgreen free screening to be a help.(see website) I have high deductable insurance and this works out well for me. Maybe this can be of help to others too.
Somehow many Americans seem to think that healthcare should be a right and be free of cost. That is a pretty riduculous notion. Competition will drive prices down; we don't have that in our system now. Elective cosmetic surgury and lasik eye surgury costs have been coming down as a result of competition. Whole foods company have a plan where their employees are allowed a sum certain for procedures and it is up to the employee to check hospitals/clinics etc. to find prices that best suit them. They can go to anyone but payment is one price.
I have found that prices can be double or triple for the same thing depending on which clinic I go to.
Consumers, help yourselfs and the healthcare profession by calling around on prices and asking for a discount if it is cheaper elsewhere. We compare prices on cars, boats, houses, etc......why not on healthcare costs when they are so important...(and so high!)

I can't believe people expect physicians to work very hard for so little in return.

Lets import doctors from Cuba. They have well trained cheap medical system there, and we could use them.

The money could go directly to Obama Nations uncle Castro and would help finance their socialist expansion.

Two wins, no loses. I want the state to care for me, I don't want to have to work, slackers rule!

This is a horrible situation. I know Sun Sentinel really isn't big on investigative reporting but it would have been nice to see what the state of Florida is trying to do in order to remedy this situation. Will they have incentives for would be students? Maybe loan forgiveness if they practice family medicine at local inner city clinics or something?

Oh and to the dufus who is whining about what the Democrats aren't saying. Are the republicans saying anything on this topic that is of any use? NO, and we americans need to stop being so damn simple minded. It is bigger than democrat or republican. When will you get it through your thick skulls that all these bastards are on the take! Democrat, republican, same crap, just different smell. Either way, they are all selling us out to wall street/corporate America, get that through your thick skulls people. America is becoming a idiocracy.

The U.S. government has been manipulating the supply of docters and other medical professions for a long time.

This keeps compenstation down while costs are increasing,(insurance, office, staff, etc). Making general practice a non-starter.

The US government has special programs to import them. The most recent insult, reusing the left over H-1B import quota's from Fy 2001 to 2003,(when congress crushed demand for local sci/tech labor), to import 50,000 medical professionals per year.

This nightmare is on going and self inflected.

If you figure the doctor takes 4 weeks vacation a year and works 60 hours a week that comes out to about $60 an hour before taxes.I know that sounds like alot to most people but for what they do they are underpaid. Lawyers, accountants and other professionals will make $200-300 an hour. Auto workers in Detroit make $40 an hour putting plastic parts on cars and get lifetime benefits.

Why not? we already get all our nurses from the Philippines.

Anyone been in the hospital lately? You can't understand a word the nurses are saying. You are taking your life in your hands thinking they understand you!

Everyone get the bill for your health insurance next year?

Ours went up $2,000. This is after it went up $2,000 last year. They also added a deductible, raised the co-pay, and changed the coverage from 100% to 10/90%

Ms. Brewer moans about her doctor "not making any money."

Does she realize that Publix requires cash money (no discount) for food? Does her dentist just give care to her sans payment? Can she just waltz into Dillards and take a dress out without paying?

How dare she whine about physicians making money! They and their families are required to eat, get dental care and buy clothes ... just like everybody else.

Why does this poor excuse for an economist think that she is entitled somehow to free labor from anyone?

I had to smile at this one. One can see a nurse for healthcare, sure. They can give ya an antibiotic for your urinary tract infection or whatever.

You will still need to see a doc sometime to diagnose the hard stuff...but there won't be enough to see because you gave the soft part of the loaf to the nurse and left the crust to the doc. That's a** backward, I think.

I'll take my intricate body to the doc that knows the most about it. The RN gets her degree in 4 years...college only. The MD does college too...plus 8 years. You wouldn't take your Ferrari to the VW dealer, now, would you....apparently some do.

This is no surprise, as many primary care docs see the writing on the wall with a new Obama health care plan: millions of Americans being marched in, forced in to well care visits--with little profit margin for the docs that remain.

Med-mal insurance premiums have skyrocketed due to frivolous lawsuits championed by the John Edwards' of the world.

Would YOU head in this direction with the coming administration? Uh, no.

Specialization is where money can still be made in the business.

Same thing happened with Obstetricians, who are leaving in droves, or just sticking to GYN work. Insurance put them out of business.
