I know this is a very late reply to your post, but only just found this site. Hopefully I can help some other people anyway.I got diagnosed with an inactive thyroid last week. Like most of u my hair is falling out and it really stresses and depresses me. I had the thickest most beautiful hair and now it's half what it was :( I've started oroxine but I feel like something is just not right. My doctor didn't even explain what I had or the medication. I'm thinking of going to see a naturopath.. What do u think???
Desperate for help!
I was diagnosed with a slightly underactive thyroid six years ago. I was put on 50mcg daily of Levothyroxine. I only found out my thyroid was inactive as I had started to shed hair, so a blood test ensued and the rest is history.
Six years down the line, about 5 months ago, I had a routine blood test which showed my thyroid was more underactive. The doctor instantly doubled my dose of Levothyroxine. I was now on 100mcg daily. By 3 months of taking it my hair had started to fall out again. I've gone from having really thick hair to really noticing the difference. I have done so much reading on the subject that it has become apparent to me that the increase of the Levothyroxine is what has sent me over the edge. My body obviously can't take it.
I revisited my doctor, who was less than sympathetic, and basically tried to convince me that it will settle down and I shouldn't stress over it. How can you not stress over it when you're pulling clumps of your own hair out of the shower?
I've begun to dread, absolutely dread, washing my hair :(
This was not going to settle down. The hair was literally dropping off me. Anyway the doctor has reduced my Levothyroxine to 75mcg daily, and I shall be going back in 6 weeks to see how the old levels are doing.
I'm writing on here to tell you all that there is hope. Do your research...Don't believe everything your doctor tells you. They're not all clued up on this. We're all different and what works for one won't work for another.
I have decided to tackle this head on (pardon the pun)
I found that Pantene shampoo burned my head and my scalp felt like I had been out in the sun for days, so now I use baby shampoo, or L'oreal Elvive replenishing shampoo is excellent and my hair feels much thicker when I use it. I use Johnsons baby conditioner, only on the tips of the hair. I've read that you shouldn't be massaging it into the scalp. I have also started taking evening primrose oil capsules, one a day, because I have read in many places that these can be taken safely with Levothyroxine, and people who take them have found that their hair grows back....Yipee :)
I take the Levothyroxine in the morning and evening primrose oil in the afternoon. It may be my imagination, but the hair feels thicker already, just by doing these few things.
Hope this helps x
