Full story: San Bernardino County Sun

Two doctors from Arrowhead Regional Medical Center told the county Board of Supervisors on Tuesday that the hospital's medical director has financial conflicts of interests that have kept him from punishing bad doctors.

Petre also told the board Tuesday that the hospital plans next month to renew almost all of the contracts with the medical corporations who provide care at ARMC - the contracts Steinmann said are tainted.

The only contract that won't be renewed, Petre said, is the contract for anesthesiology services.

Safdari said that's "a classic case of retaliation against a whistle-blower."

And Comunale said not renewing the anesthesiology contract - which is held by one of Comunale's relatives - is "just a vendetta on GnanaDev's part."

Petre said he could not comment on why that contract would not be renewed.

Most employees who work at ARMC do so because they care about people. After all, they chose to be a part of a healing profession. But healing and patient care has taken a back seat to power, control, money and greed. Our community has lost a first-rate trauma center, but more importantly it is has lost a safety net. No longer can the poor, the out-of-work, or those in crisis feel they have a safe haven where they will receive quality care despite an inability to pay. Nor can the insured be assured they will receive a respectable level of care.

Instead of decisions based on what is best for the patient, they are based on lining the pockets of the person in charge or his chosen few. Dr. Dev Gnanadev has proven to be an ineffectual, despotic, retaliatory leader. He micromanages to the point of creating inefficiency in the entire operation of the facility. And he had a great teacher in former Chief Executive Officer Mark Uffer who built a career on retaliation, fear, and subterfuge.

Maybe we can hire an outside political crony for a $200,000 study of the situation. I'm certain Ovitt and Biane owe someone worthy of a little graft.

Wow all the animosity. How can you fix something that is not broke. Mark my words this whole feiscal is a power struggle. I smell a union mole coming out of it's union mole hole at election time and I am right Google Dr GhanaZev and then all you see is the union mole Sharon Gilberts slanderous comments about uffer and DR Zev. It's not about DR Zev it's about union control and there greed. When x-CAO Mark Uffer set up the ARMC he did a excellent job and that is what partly what Sharon Gilbert is after besides Union control of health care. Anyone who has come in contact with MISS Gilbert knows not only her insane tactics but her back stabbing union agenda. She blast anyone in her way. Dr GnanaDev may very well have contracts but I honestly believe that he did not have greed as a motivating factor.

First off I do not like reporters spinning this story. Dr Zev was there yesterday and I know that because I was there. DR Zev may have tried to take on to much responsibility so that he had better control. He has run a good hospital up until now and I know would be glad to take a polygraph. Also Petre said that he welcomed Dr Steinmans’s comments.

"I don't think it is as bad as the Republicans say nor as good as what the Democrats say," said Dr. Dev GnanaDev, medical director of Arrowhead Regional Medical Center and former president of the California Medical Association.

"In the end, it is the right step," said GnanaDev, who made many trips to Washington to lobby for the CMA position on health care reform during 2009 and this year.
...
GnanaDev, of Arrowhead Regional, was joined by Dr. Kathleen Clem, chairwoman of the department of emergency medicine at Loma Linda University Medical Center, in voicing concern that the legislation could further flood emergency rooms.
...
GnanaDev said he is concerned that the low reimbursement rates for the additional 1.7 million Medical patients in California will continue to lock them out of private doctor's offices, forcing them into local emergency rooms.

In a statement, the California Medical Association said: "Unfortunately, the bill builds health care reform on the broken foundations of Medicare and Medicaid, without adequate funding."

GnanaDev said despite its problems, the health care reform package is "a good first pitch."

He likened it to passage of Civil Rights legislation in the 1960s, saying that the next two decades will be spent "fixing the problem."

"We didn't wake up overnight and become a different nation" in the Civil Rights arena. It's unrealistic to expect perfection from the first legislation on health care reform, he said.

ET says I personally think that the unions want to get rid of Dr. Zev. I haven't figured it all out but when Union thugs and Goons like Sharon Gilbert, Erwin or sponge BOB Blaugh show up at your door knocking or have anything to do with it it's time to look at all the facts and put a lock on the cookie jar. Look at yesterdays BOS supervisors meeting and all the union awards isn't there hefty checks and benifits some token of appreciation. It was a true cart and pony show yesterday by union officials at yesterdays meeting.

ET Snell, this isn't about Sharon Gilber or the union. Geezzz. You really need to get a better act. The one you have now makes you look like a crazy man with no life.

At any rate, Dr. Steinmann's letter of concern was very poignant. It appears as though he is deeply worried about patient care. It appears some patients have suffered some serious injuries at the hands of some medical staff at ARMC. This has got to be a concern we all share.

Dev Ganadev is a very wealthy man. He and Uffer go way back. The whole money making one person controls the contracts is a long fetted machine. This issue should have been looked at a long time ago. It has been allowed to lie unchecked because Ganandev has the pull of at least three memebers of the BOS. Ovitt, Biane, Gonzales. We all heard about the free medical services they and their family has received. Well, as free as taxpayer dollars can be. Ganandev has been allowed to run amock because he filters a lot of the money from those contracts back to those members of the BOS. Investigating Steinmann's comcerns will open a pandora's box.

Kudos to Steinmann for stepping up to the plate and doing the right thing. We should all write to the Grand Jury and demand an investigation. Let's throw all the bums out. Let's vote in some BOS members who have no affilations or promises to anyone. Let's help Steinmann in his quest to do what's right.

Who's with me? Let me know. I will send you a copy of the citizen's complaint form.

Dr. Steinman should be commended for speaking out like this. Things MUST be really, really, really bad because Dr.s do not tend to speak out against one another in this fashion.

The County’s response is a joke. Personality issues? Did they read the letter Dr. Steinmann sent to them? I did and it was scathing.

Now, Mr. Devereaux…. it’s your move. Get rid of Petre and Dr. Dev. and stop allowing the County’s little spin machine to attack whistleblowers.

It is my opnion that Dr Dev may or may not have been in error of trying to take on to much. But you as a former union goon staffer and thug are the infection and people like you, Erwin and Sponge BOB Blaugh are extortion artist. Dr Zev always had Ruth Stringer to advise him and he trusted his superiors. Dr Dev and Petre do not have a evil bone in there body.
Why are union goons like yourself out to destroy Dr. Zev it's you and your union agenda of health care take over. I'll bet the farm that this is just yet another union manipulation. I have never trusted you to have the interest of the people at hand. We need to keep union moles away from acting like little whirl winds to manipulate taking the pie while we Americans have all dummied down. Devarau will do what the board tells him so quit prodding him, you are just getting ready to leash out at Devarau.

Since you like to look lets look at you and then your greedy union. If someone looked at and scrutinized the county union clerical jobs they could do away with quite a few of them. Like the many useless paper mills that union members fill like the process to collect from patients or the process to find owners of tax defaulted properties. My favorite are the court stenographers. A video cameras would work better and there would be no human error. Tuesdays BOS supervisors cart and pony show. It was a sorry site to see, from the gun toting probation employees cutting the line to free inmate labor and food prepared at Glen Helen. The unions have jacked our school boards and we need to look towards organized labor not organized crime. Keep the unions out of health care or they will do what they have done to prisons and crime, Urban education and school boards.
