It seems that exercising is creating a problem with leg pain and this is a new symptom. Don't know if it is from Benicar or something else. I would be interested in any feedback. My husband has developed major problems after being on the active ingredient in this drug and after only a few weeks. Back, leg, knee, shoulder pain came on all at once. He's running low grade fevers now and can barely get out of bed in the AM. Having blood work done as we speak to find source. This side affect wasn't mentioned in the brochure of the drug my husband took but it did appear in literature re: the clinical trials of Benicar, which is the active ingredient of the drug my husband took. More severe problems regarding bone/muscle pain appeared post marketing. Again none of that was in the brochure either. He's been off for a couple weeks and is still deteriorating. Prior to this he was active, went from sun up to sun down. Now he's a broken guy and can barely work. Anyone else out there suffering at this level?

I have been having severe hot flashes. I went to the doctor and he told me it could be menopause. I am taking hormone replacement therapy. The hot flashes are still there. I have been to a orthopedic due to not being able to walk without severe pain. Until reading this forum I didn't know that others were having the same foot problems too. I just don't know what to do. I have to take BP meds, my BP is so high without them I could stroke out. Anybody have any suggestions. I can't take the Beta Blockers due to severe cough.

I have to say that almost every BP med that I've tried has caused me to have side effects. Most recently I've had some success by adding in a naturl supplement but i also worked really hard to reduce my salt intake and to take a bit more exercise. I now try to have three days with "zero salt" - not always possible - each week and it seems to help. I've been taking Alistrol as a supplement and it also seems to help lower my readings in a more natural way. I read reviews about Alistrol here - lots of feedback stuff ... http://www.bloodpressurehigh.com/alistrol-lin...

Benicar was about the 4th blood pressure that has been prescribed for me over the last 15 years or so. My doctor has, over time, regularly changed my meds for b/p - always stating they weren't managing my numbers correctly. About a year ago I started with Benicar 20mg and had noticed that I wasn't sleeping very well, some weight gain, pneumonia and bronchitis a few times and really intense foot pain. I chalked this up to maybe getting older or another med I was on: Evista and after taking that for 20+ years so...stopped that medication, thinking that would eleviate all of the above. Nope! While going to the doctor for last regular checkup I had another doctor at the same office prescribe Benicar again but with the diuretic Benicar HCT - MY FOOT PROBLEMS AND EVERY OTHER SYMPTOM I HAD INCREASED to the point I could hardly walk because my feet were so swollen. Then I started doing more research on line & found this fabulous site - what an eye-opener!! Went to see the doctor again last week (unscheduled) again and what did he prescribe??? Benice 40mg!!! even after the concerns I had about Benicar that I mentioned to him. He gave me samples and I took 2 pills and just stopped. I am going to take my chances and take some propanolol that I have for essential tremors that I always have on hand and use potassium, extra magnesium, coconut oil and the like. I will try one last time with my doctor and try to find another drug for b/p but NOT BENICAR!!! By the way 1 ~ 2 DAYS AFTER STOPPING BENICAR - ALL MY SYMPTOMS/SIDE EFFECTS WENT AWAY!!! I thank you all for your personal info about this horrible drug - I know I'm not alone, now.

Just want to add too: that fatigue is a major issue and maybe some depression. I am so relieved that when I drive my car I can at least feel the foot pedals when I am driving and this only happene, after stopping Benicar. I might look into Diovan, now. We'll see.

My cadiologist prescibed Benicar 20 mg in Feb. 2011 to control my BP. I only take 1/2 tablet which is 10 mg. at night. I take 50 mg Metroprolol in the morning for BP also. At first, I had a metallic taste in my mouth, but soon subsided. I began having tightness in my chest and sever pain under my breastbone a couple of weeks later. Now I have this weird feeling in my head like my brain in short circuited or I am having a stroke. I went to my cardiologist and she said she didn't think it was the Benicar. She increased my reflux medication for the pain in my stomach. I have had two heart stents 2004 and 2008 and take a lot of medications and am 64 yrs old. I am like a lot of other people when it comes to sensitivity to medications. I was hospitalized with severe hives and had them for 4 weeks, so when it comes to changing medicines I don't have a lot of choices. I feel like the Benicar is the culprit for feeling depressed, anxious, stomach pain and these crazy headaches and strange feelings in my head. Today my legs and arms feel like I have had the flu. They just ache. My head feels better tonight, but after I take my nightly dosage, I know my head will start hurting again. Benicar is very expensive and with no insurance I don't like to continue to experiment with drugs that hurt me. I really feel embarassed to call my cardiologist and complain again, but I know Benicar is doing this to me. Has anyone had these same side effects with Benicar?

I have had every side effect there is known when on Benicar. I was on it for a short period of time and thank God, when I told my Dr., she took me off of it right away. It's been a few days now, and I have beentaking asthma spray cause I can't breathe right, chest pains, sinus problems, room spinning, heart palpitations, weakness, pain everywhere, stiff joints, jaw locking, etc... barbara wrote: <quoted text>Thanks for responding. What are you doing about controlling your BP? Does your physician agree that these ills are from the Benicar? I get different small things that come and go. The vision problems are only when I am outside in my front yard. It feels like I can see things jumping around. Also, lately I have had stomach upset, sinus issues, lump in throat, and on and on. All of these things come and go and then something else happens. I don't know if it is from the medication or if there is something wrong with me. Going back to physician in a couple of weeks for my six month follow up and lab work. We'll see what he has to say. Every time I mention side effects he says if he had to take BP med, the only medication he would take is Benicar because it is so effective and has minimal side effects. Let me know.

karen wrote: I am a Critical Care RN for 30 years so I am very leary of some of these posts where people have supposed side effects that in no way can be attributed to this drug. These usually are people who claim to have side effects to just about everything and anything. We see these people all the time in the hospital. I'm not saying people don't have many of these problems, just that they in some cases, are totally unrelated to the drug. I take 40mg of Benicar daily ( for 2 years) along with 3 other antihypertensive medications. They all have minor side effects. The 2 worst I have experienced on Benicar are rapid heart beat and upper back pain. I cannot take the full dose (40 mg) of Benicar all at once so I divide the dose in half and take 20mg twice a day. If you are just starting on this drug, ask your physician if you can start taking it in smaller doses first and titrate it up to the full dose over a few weeks. This can minimize the S/E as your body gets use to it. This is not the perfect drug, but if it becomes tolerable, it is worth it. Sustained untreated hypertension has many adverse side effects on your body including heart issues, LVH ( left ventricular hypertrophy,( enlargement of the left side of your heart and can over time, seriously affect your kidney function. Benicar along with the other ARBS, is also renal protective. Ask your physician about this. All medications are not for everyone, it takes a lot of trial and error sometimes, but it pays to be realistic with regards to side effects, don't attribute "getting shorter" or some of these other things,as one person did to this drug. That is ridiculous. Hey Karen, do you know if you have to be weaned off Benecar HCT? Or if you can just stop taking it? Thanks!

Some drugs do have side effects that only a few people are experiencing and the side effects also vary. Like for Paxil they have side effects that are dangerous for pregnant women only. To know more about it you can check http://www.paxilbirthdefectlaw.com/paxil-info...

People having "side effects" from benicar should definitely see Marshallprotocol.com where benicar is being used to treat autoimmune disease caused by bacteria. "Side effects" are probably due to either using the HCT version of benicar - which is known to have bad effects, or alternatively when using pure benicar, what is known as "immunopathology" - because benicar can re-start your immune system killing bacteria when it has been hitherto partially disabled by bacterial compounds. When this happens a wide range of unpleasant effects can take place. However, pure benicar is a very valuable drug and if you suffer from autoimmune or chronic disease, is probably the only drug at present that can cure it. The immunopathology is actually a good sign that you're killing bacteria and this can be managed. If you suffer effects it is well worth looking at the MP site to see if its because you have an underlying autoimmune disease. The matter is too complex for me to cover in a few lines but frequency and amount of dosing is also very important. The Marshallprotocol staff probably know more about the effects of benicar than anyone and if you want answers from the horses mouth go to Curemyth1.org . You can register and get detailed answers. Don't give up on the benicar before you find out more and don't stop it suddenly.
