I am taking 40mg. Benicar daily for hypertension. I began taking the medication mid October, 2005. About a month later I began to experience a dry night cough. I now am experiencing dry night cough, chest tightness upon awakening, sinus congestion. Has anyone else had these side effects?

Yes, I have had many side effects from Benicar. I have been having SEVERE HEADACHES almost from the first day I started taking it. Also, I have shortness of breath and tightness in my chest. I have lost weight, which is not good for me since I onl weighed 92 pds to begin with. I am very upset because my Blood Pressure continues to be higher than ever. Ihave begged my Doctor to put me on something else, but He doesn't want to. I really feel extremely anxious and nervous since beginning this medication. I aso take 100 Mgs. of Lopressor a day. I just don't understand what is going on here. It is difficult for me to do my housework because I feel so bad most of the time. Often, I wake up in the morning withmy heart beating in my head until I just sit down and try to wait until it gets better. My poor Husband does not know what to think. I am just not myself since taking Benicar for a month and ahalf. Could ANYONE give me a clue or suggestion what to do? I don't want to get ugly with my cardiologist>>>> >That would do no good. Help Me know what is the best thing to about this horrible problem in my life. Before Benicar, I wa taking Avapro 300Mg. Thank You so much for Listening. Sandra from La.

I know Benicar is a good drug for many people, but I have had many terrible side effects. The Headaches aand rapid pulse is very upsettng. I have had shortness of breath and chest pain as well. Has anyone been experiencing these problems? I have gotten very depressed over the situation. Any input would be deeply appreciated. Sandra from LA.

I was taking Norvasc prior to taking Benicar and the reason I was switched was because I was having side effects similar to Sandra from LA from the Norvasc! I was so depressed it was terrifying! So far I have had no side effects from the Benicar. One thing I can say is,let your doctor know you are having problems with the medications-there are lot of medications out there for treating high blood pressure and you just have to experiment until you find the one that works for you!

I had exactly the same symptoms. Finally, after four months on the medication, I woke up with a swollen face, chest tightness and that terrible dry cough at night. Cough disappeared. Doctor took me off Benicar and put me on Sular which is a calcium channel blocker. Have been on it for a week, lowered blood pressure, but I notice the last two nights, I have started coughing again. Side effects list that a cough is a possible side effect. I am beginning to wonder if cough is not a side effect of all of these hypertensives. Doctors don't like to listen to patients. My doctor was convinced my cough and chest tightness was from allergies, sinus or GERD. So much for that. It was only after my face became swollen that he decided to change meds. I am not hopeful with this medication. This is the fifth try. Very frustrating. I would talk to your doctor and tell him that you didn't have these symptoms pre Benicar. I also talked to the manufacturer and they advised me that since Benicar acts on the bradykins, it can cause a dry cough in susceptible individuals and is definitely a side effect. Like you, I was anxious about what was going on in my body and what long term effects it would have. Keep in touch.

Are you still on the Benicar? I was on Benicar for four months. At first it was great. No side effects. Then I developed a dry, night cough, chest tightness when I woke up in the morning and a general feeling of not being well. I talked to my doctor and he said it was either sinus or Gerd but not the Benicar. When I developed a swollen face, chest tightness the following week, he changed my medication to Sular which is a calcium channel blocker. I am as frustrated as you. If hypertension wasn't such a serious disorder I would not take anything. The side effects are horrible creating a lot of anxiety. Talk to your doctor. The clinical trials don't tell the whole story. It is only when it gets on the market do they really find out what the real side effects are.

Yes ... I"ve been on Benicar (20mg) since just after it was approved in 2002. I've experienced the following side effects - acute infection of the nose, throat or sincus, throat irritation, inflammation of the nose, sinus irritation and congestion, backache, dizziness, flu-like symptoms, head pain, diarrhea, fast heartbeat, indigestion, abnormal trouble sleeping, low energy, fluid retention in the feet and puffy face, cough, stomach cramps, feeling weak, and higher than ever cholesteral levels.
The funny thing is when I first started on the drug, it worked great, my bp was back to normal in a few weeks and stayed that way for almost two years. Now it has crept back up to Stage 1 hypertension levels despite taking the drug and my cholesteral level is high once again. I was right at prehypertension when I first started taking Benicar. My doctor won't take me off of Benicar and is now pushing for prescription meds for my cholesteral (I'm on Red Yeast Rice).

I am researching the web to see if Benicar was ever tested long term. I'm not too happy about being its guinea pig, especially since I've got doubts as to its long term benefits.

I have been taking Benicar for a year. If I miss a dose I suffer severe debilatating headaches for two days when I start taking it again. I also suffer from cough, and decongestion but had not attributed it to the meds until now. I also notice chest tightness and some dizziness.
I am currently dieting and am having a hard time loosing. Has anyone else had a hard time loosing weight while taking benicar?

My doctor would not take me off Benicar either until I developed a swollen face, then he switched me to Sular. He would not acknowledge that my cough, chest tightness, sinus problems were related to Benicar. I felt like you that I was a guinea pig. Since I switched to Sular, a calcium channel blocker, all of the symptoms have disappeared. This is what I did. If you want to find out the details of this drug, you need to contact the FDA and request all releasable information regardiing Benicar. They will send you results of clinical trials, adverse effects, etc. I have made this request for Sular and am waiting for the literature. Send the request to HFI 35 FDA 5600 Fishers Lane Rockville Maryland 20857 and ask for all releasable information and adverse effects printouts. Hope this helps.

Once, I began taking benicar I had trouble sleeping and when I did sleep I experienced vivid dreams. After about a month on the drug I started to become very agitated and felt like my brain was short circuiting. My doctor dimissed the symptoms and told me he didn't charge extra for the dreams. I am looking for another doctor and have discontinued the benicar, within 48 hours I slept well and the agitation ceased.

Im not crazy!!!! I thought I was!!
I started Benicar 3 days ago!! I started it Tuesday evening. On Wednesday morning I had chest pains so severe that I wound up at the ER for 5 hours. My tests were all normal. However, the doctor who prescribed the drug suggested that I see a cardiologist. Supposedly the effects were "stress related". For the past two days, I have been suffering extreme anxiety and heaviness in my chest. Also, shortness of breath. I could not imagine what was bringing this on. I have researched the web, and found only one site that lists my symptomatology as attendant to the drug... then I found this website!!
I am not alone!! As I am only 3 days on the drug, I am taking myself off of it immediately. Of course I will have to weather today, but at least I know what is going on. There are countless blood pressure drugs on the market. Clearly this is not the one for me.
I am grateful that I put two and two together and that others posted their experience. God bless you all, and I hope we all find the proper resolution. Please keep posting. This is sooooooo important!!

I started with Lotrel 5/10, which made me so depressed I told my doctor either take me off or I will replace you instead. He then gave me Norvasc, but it did not lower my blood pressure. Additionally, while on Norvasc my face was extremely red all the time and I was short of breath. I went back to my doctor and he said it's all in my head. I told him perception is reality and I don't the drug so change it!

I have been on Benicar for five (5) days and I have never felt better. My blood pressure was normally around 160/100 most of the time. Now its 135/68 and I feel very calm.

I hope this continues to work, because being a guinea pig is very frustrating. I also have high cholesterol. I'm taking Red Yeast Rice and Gugulipid which is working great. I have lowered my cholesterol fifty (50) points.

This is a very cool site. Good luck everyone, I wish you the very best.

I have been taking Benicar HCT 40/12.5 for three weeks. I am still experiencing hypertension. Lotrel was added this week. Additionally, I take Toprol XL and clonidine. I have been having headaches for the past few weeks - which I have attributed to the hypertension. Now I think maybe not - the Benicar also causes abdominal distress. Hypertension BITES!!

The doctors will tell you that your side effects are not drug related. I have become quite a researcher and will not take anything unless I do a thorough search. I have found the FDA site as well as contacting them directly is the best source of sound information relating to adverse effects. Forget the manufacturer. They are going to "sugar coat" the adverse effects and tell you the drug is wonderful. FDA has printouts of all adverse related events, since the doctors and manufacturer are required by law to report these adverse events. Also, clinical trial do not uncover side effects. That is only documented once the drug is in the general population. Benicar lowered by blood pressure but the side effects were intolerable. My doctor switched me to Sular, which is a calcium channel blocker. It is working o.k. but I will see him next week and will bet money that he will increase the dosage from 20mg. to 30mg since the systolic is still a little up there at 128 to 145. Diastolic is very low, in the mid 60's to low 70's. You are right to research and insist that you take whatever works and gives you the least side effects. Blood pressure is very difficult to treat and I gues we have to accept the fact that you have to keep trying until you find the right combination. Keep in touch

Im going to try an lose around twenty five pounds and eat better with the hope that I will be able to get off the medication at some point. I'm thirty six and feel to young to have high blood preasure. I will keep everyone posted over the coming months.

Good Luck!

I have been on benicar for about a year, and I also have the terrible dry cough, I too have been experiencing chest tightness and I will be having a stress test april 20,2006 as a precautionary measure, I have had many sinus related problems, I have asked my doctor to change my medication to something other than Benicar, which he plans on doing after my stress test, I would have been off this medication long ago except most blood pressure meds give me a terrible cough 95% of the day and benicar does control my blood pressure. The dry cough in the morning and the recurring sinus problems have finally got the better of me and it's time to try something else.

On March 31 I started taking 25 mg of Benicar and at the sametime the doctor started me on the antidepressant Cymbalta fo back pain. I lost April 1, 2 and on the third I was so out of it I could not read the letters on my computer. I immediately stopped the antidepressant because I seem always to be affected by those types of drugs. I continued to take Benicar and Normodyne and although the dizzyness got better I was having terrible shortness of breath and indigestion. I was feeling so bad by April 9 I discontinued taking the Benicar because I had researched it and found it contained sulfa and I have always been allergic to SULFA. I blamed the shortness of breath, throat restriction and indigestion on the Benicar and stop taking the drug. I did not go to see the doctor until yesterday, April 17, and I told him the symptons I had had and he said he did not believe it was the Benicar but gave me a different Benicar that did not have sulfa drug in it. I began taking it last night and am anxious to see if there is a difference and if it controls my blood pressure. If you are allergic to sulfa you might consider if it is affecting you with Benicar.
