The fox guarding the hen house. Does it matter how long the "investigation" takes place? Are we to believe what is told to the press? We will hear what maintains the hospitals ability to collect money.
How about an outside investigation? Times Standard? Nah, better get the Chronicle in here.

I hope that Dr. Sellinger's attorneys are having a "discussion" with the hospital and the Times Standard. Someone needs to be disciplined here.Talk about hurting a man's reputaion.

He is not the first doctor to be discarded as needed. Ask the old radiology group, the pathologists, the emergency doctors, the anesthesiologists. Doctors are hard to recruit here, and yet dozens have been edged out for a more controlling situation. And at huge expense, while the hospital begs for more money.

Maybe the doctors all need to get together and make a class action suit?

Times Standard states, ICU nurses are on Administrative Leave. If they
are on "leave", why are all of their job's posted on SJH job-line. Check it out, everyone of the nurses that were "on leave" SJH has their job posted. They were terminated from employment.(FIRED)

Play their way, or the highway. Sadly for patients, good care does not always get first priority. The nurses try, but politics prevail. Good story if the Times Standard ever digs in. Northcoast Journal? Who wants to be the whistle blower here?

The jobs were posted prior to all this happening, look at the dates.

This is really sad. We have a hard time getting nurses to come here as it is. Even the traveling nurses don't like coming to Eureka. If things keep up the way they've been going we're all going to have to go to either Redding or Santa Rosa for hospital care.

There are lot of nurses in Humboldt Co. with HSU and CR graduating every year approx. 80 RN student's. ICU will need to train the new nurses.

that would imply that they were going to fire them and were trying to get replacements prior to actually doing it

Yeah, like I really want a trainee working on me while I'm in the ICU.

Stupid.

And just how do you think nurses learn a "Speciality", ED, Maternity, OR etc.? They train with a nurse in that Dept. for a certain amount of time. Yes, it's expensive for the hospital, but if they can't hire an experienced nurse, they train.......And just how did you think your Doctor learned to do his first surgery???

St. Joseph continues to pay lots of money to train new nurses and recruit new nurses and doctors. We just lost 5 board and fellowship certified anesthesiologists because of political infighting. We lost the qualified safe and local ones for the hired unknown (and often incompetent) locums. Ask who your doctor is before you go under the knife...

This is pretty scary. Someone really needs to step in and do something about this situation before someone ends up dead.

I'm willing to bet that these issues happen at all hospitals. Can someone in this field of work enlighten us.

If they have no ICU nurses Who will train new ICU nurses? What the heck is going on there?
I'm starting to dis-trust St. Joseph it feels a lot less like friendly nuns concerned for peoples health, and a lot more like a greedy power crazed business, with no checks and balances to make sure this giant tax free money machine is really serving the public good.

SJH Eka, and RMH
Fortuna, often send employees down to their "mother" hospital in Orange to train nurses for speciality units. It's expensive, but works well to train since it is a much larger hospital.

As for crazy political infighting in hospitals and hospital boards is common. The most famously insane is the Marin General and it's elected health services board.

Dear Wondering
there is "drama" at every hospital. The amount that is out in the open varies. There are checks and balances, oversight and rules.
Overall i believe that patients are safe in the hospitals. Sure mistakes and accidents happen that shouldn't and are heartbreaking when they do. There are also bad apples out there (which is why there are people looking at the care people provide and intervening when needed)

When things go wrong for a patient due to a mistake or an accident it is horrible for that patient and their family but also for the healthcare provider no one sets out to make a mistake.

Overall i believe that healthcare workers care and want to provide the best care they can. I know i got into this line of work because i want to help people, i want to make a difference, I want to be that good memory they take away from what might not have been the best days (being in the hospital and being ill)I believe in patient centered care and i am supported in my unit by the management so that i can provide that care. I only wish everyone could have that both as a patient and a provider.

If all you readers knew the real reason why the Nurses’ were places on leave you would all be applauding the actions of St Joseph’s Hospital. I had a relative that was recently in ICU and they witnessed the wrongdoing first hand. The fact that the Nurses’ have been placed on unpaid leave is completely warranted and I sure hope they are fired. I also hope they are not able to get another Nursing job anywhere. If you were in the ICU at St Joseph’s you definitely would not want theses particular people taking care of you or your relatives. Don’t be so quick to judge, unless you have all the facts. I am not going to disclose the reason, but I am sure it will all be revealed in the press soon enough. The Nurses were NOT doing their job and from what I heard and saw, they deserved to be fired and it probably was not soon enough in my opinion.
