Does anyone really think that the city councils of San Marino, Beverly Hills, Malibu or even any of the very conservative cities in Orange County would allow a bunch of fast food restaurants to open and just let the market decide? No way.
That horrible "Consumer Freedom" group is not working on behalf of consumers. Besides restaurants, they defend payday loan businesses, another exploitative enterprise in disadvantaged communities. It's easy to drive through these areas and assume that everyone there only wants fast food, liquor stores and check cashing businesses, but that's not the case. It's not a choice between Wolfgang Puck and KFC. There's a lot of middle ground.
Let the church say "Amen!"
Plus, people who think fresh produce lasts for an entire month should not participate in discussions about healthy eating!

Not having access to fresh, nutritious foods is another force. If you think people simply eat fast food because "they like it", you should think again. Having access to healthy food is a basic human right, not a luxury.
Are u crazy ?

Sit down in a chair. Now show me your human right to healthy food.

Show me one time in the HISTORY of the world ANYWHERE ANY TIME where healthy food is a human right.

WTF caveman did not have hummus and tofu. You ppl who post here are effing morons and should be shot for stupidity.

1/3 of the world is starving to death (maybe more) do you think they give a damn about health food.... they would drink a gallon of lard right now rather than starve to death.

Humans have NO rights. Certain countries have created governments that give people rights but in the end the only people who are truly free are the ones who live outside the law and carry a big gun.

Circle A I hate you and everything you stand for. You don't have the right to tell me what to do or what to eat.

A right to healthy food ??????? You are the dumbest person who ever posted in these forums.

I really feel for the people of South LA. They are continually forgotten about and are left to run wild. It's nice to see City Hall step up and help these poor neglected souls. It's about time they got it right.

Buy FRESH produce once a month and expect it to stay fresh until the next month! LOL! Obviously you're on the outside looking in. Dragging groceries on the bus is not easy. Especially when the bus driver pulls away from the curb while you're still standing and trying to balance bags, etc. What about the elderly? There are other dynamics involved but people who don't live here think they know how to fix everything, as usual.
Oh cut out the victimization nonsense. You know that most people in L.A. own a car, including South LA. You also know that they choose to buy food according to what tastes good and satisfies them. This is about personal choice and a city council wishing to remove that personal choice. I don't need to live there to know that it's not that unlike most neighborhoods in America. It's residents are just as free to make choices in life as others. I live near a Whole Foods market and never shop there because it's too expensive. I live near a McDonald's and restaurants with healthier choices, and I mostly eat at McDonald's. But I also choose to exercise every day.

If the fast food joints didn't open down there, you'd accuse them of discrimination and not providing job opportunities.

My guess is that you just like to complain and seek empowerment over other people's choices using the government.

You'd just love to restrict my right to express my opinion, wouldn't you? That way, your victimization propaganda wouldn't be exposed, right?

You live NEAR McDonald's, you live NEAR Whole Foods and you NEAR other restaurants with healthier choices. So do I, but a lot of people don't have all of those options in their neighborhoods.

Oh please, you sound just like the other excuse making professional victim up above. Even if healthier choices were next door to them, they'd still hop into their cars and make a beeline for Burger King just like 85% of the rest of the population. And nobody is stopping them from cooking their own meals at home. Access to healthy choices is near enough to them, they simply choose not to make those choices. You're just looking for another excuse to fatten government bureaucracy and power. Stop acting like these people are a bunch of helpless babies who need you to wipe their rumps for them. And if they are, you go do it and leave the rest of us alone who are capable of wiping our own backsides.

Ok "barstow guy", you seem like a pretty intelligent being yourself.

I said "healthy food", not "health food." These terms are not synonymous. One is referring to trendy cafes, and the other is referring to fresh wholesome fruits and vegetables.

I recommend, for you...to brush up on your reading comprehension skills and then come back when you can form an eloquent response.

And when did I ever say I was going to force hummus and tofu down your throat? Wow.

But honestly, I can understand why you would want to murder me (or advocate the murder of my person) because you do not share the same beliefs as me. After all, you're simply a product of our violence saturated society, and you are unable to transcend your innate subhuman desire for bloodlust.

Good day to you!:)

either of two options -
the council is racist and thinks the people of south central are too stupid to make healthy food choices or
the council is corrupt and figures the existing fast food places will be making more money (kick backs and taxes) for them with reduced future competition.

The author of this report obviously thinks that people do not know what a fast food restaurant is. There is no reason to have a hyphen between fast and food. It is obvious that the author of this article has a low opinion of the readers.

This fast food restaurant ban is ridiculous! The fast food industry provides jobs in the community and it is make economic sense in doing so. Jan Perry thinks that the public can't make sensible choices regarding health issues, so she goes and take it upon herself. What happen with popular sovereignty? In the meantime, the cash flow economy in South L.A. is going to remain stagnant for a year and perhaps, an additional six months. Way to go Jan Perry for another blundering fiasco!

I have a better suggestion for the city council: just raze all of South LA, send the illegals home, sell the land to productive and competent citizens, and then get out of people's way and sit up on your podium issuing feel-good proclamations that don't trample on the rights of a free society.
