if you take a close look on this issue you will know that only the christians has this problem. they always think of themselves as the elite, educated, clean, superior, and god in heaven chosen people. everyone else is second class to them, the unclean, the untouchable, gentiles,
even their muslims brothers are regarded as second class citizen. i wonder if that is what Christianity meant. |

Social discrimination which is a by nature a global pandemic, transcends religion, color and race. In Lebanon, You belong to either, a social elite, a bourgeoisie or the populace. Religion on it's own can be a good thing. In theory, religion brings people closer together by preachingr the love of one GOD and the respect of his creation, Human beings. Religion to men of cloth and politicians alike, is a tool that allows them to instill a sense of communal belonging by playing up on the nature of the OTHER, the unbeliever, and the imminent threat that difference to one's very existence it creates. Religion is what politicians and men of cloth use to create a raison d'etre for themselves. What those hypocrites, politicians and men of cloth alike have done so skilfully through the centuries is make people like you, slaves of their fears and hate of the OTHER. The issue of racism as addressed in the BBC article written by Andrew North, a bigot and a racist par excellence is a despicable attempt by a failure of a reporter to discredit The Sporting Club Swimming Center, in Beirut, Lebanon by claiming that the Club enforces racial prejudices against Black and Asian migrant workers because of the club's policy of not allowing workers on their premises. North, firstly assumes that migrant workers can obviously only be black or Asian, a racist statement in itself. without this stupid argument North has no article to write. The Sporting Club's member list and patrons includes people from different nationalities, religions and skin color. Clients of the Club are NOT allowed to bring and help with them, regardless of the nature of the assistance those helpers provide.(Medical reasons excluded) Business men are NOT allowed their personal help or assistants on the premises of the Club. Politician are NOT allowed their body guards on the premises of the Club. Ambassadors, are not allowed their security team on the premises of the Club. Families who cannot take care of their children are NOT allowed their helpers/maids on the premises. Proper grooming and decent attire are prerequisites. Men not accompanied by wives or female friends are NOT welcome. Children and teenagers not attended by a parent are NOT allowed access to the Club. The Sporting Club is a private institution and a business, therefore the Club screens it's patrons in terms of potential Dollar spend AND homogeneity. HOMOGENEITY, MEANING EXACTLY: that the ONLY directive of the Club's management is to maintain a pleasant atmosphere for high spend and like minded individuals, regardless of their religion, race, color, political views and sexual preferences. you are technically right, but i will disagree with you on some issues first, if someone owns say, a beach club, a casino, or nite club, i dont think just because he owns it he should put in laws and regulations contrary to the law of the state. secondly, i do agree with you that discrimination is a global pandemic, but you see, each and every nation has a moral obligation to the international committee in terms of public opinion, for example, it does not mean that if say, israel practices discrimination, appartheit against the palestinians, we should do likewise, we have to show the international community we are a civilize people, and a democracy state, i believe that will contribute to the development of the country. thirdly, in terms of economic dont you think if am there with my wife and 2 children i will spend on the 4 of us, but if i have a maid i will spend on 5 insteed? |

All true and I agree. I saw this nice bumper sticker today, "There is only one race, the Human Race. Everything else is culture." Tolerance can be difficult at times. |

Well put Waleed , I grow up going to the club . I have been away for the past ten years or so and this summer I was amazed by the spirit, the atmoshpere, the people , I salute you for mainting this untouched from the outside world around it.... cheers to you and the management .. keep it going... we are still living our memories of this place....its very easy to judge but your fan club is not affected by an article which is obviously not based on a well researched survey..."its better to be talked about than to be ignored".. 1, there are two types of beach clubs, those built on a property adjacent to a sandy beach, and those built on rocky beach fronts. Clubs/hotels/resorts with a sandy beach front, charge you for the use of their premises, pools, terraces showers, cabins and other services. Those Clubs cannot/should not charge you for the use of the sandy beach, since the sandy beaches do not require any annual servicing or maintenance. Sandy beaches replenish themselves naturally. Clubs/resorts/hotels built on rocky beaches, require much cash in terms of annual maintenance & repairs because of the damages to the cement terraces and structures caused by winter storms. The rocky beaches these clubs are built on, would be totally unaccessible to swimmers and bathers if terraces were not built and safe access to the water front was not created. Regarding families with kids and maids, let use assume for a moment an average 100 families with let us say 60 maids being allowed in to a club, this is 60 less high spend guests a club can host. It is bad enough for a club to let in children, let in maids/help and imagine the loss of person/day spend a club would suffer. Some clubs only admit people 18 and above, because they do not want families with children all together. Not a social discrimination or racial issue but rather a pure economic issue. You need to realize that beach front resorts and clubs operate on a seasonal basis typically 3 to 4 months a year. BUT have to spend the same amount of money in terms of maintenance and repairs as business that run all year. Nothing racial, no discrimination, resorts and clubs are business where cash is king and are not social or public non institutions. |

I do not agree with your approach. Whilst there are no clubs in the world where a particular race is excluded, most private clubs have their own set of rules since by definition they are private clubs. Thus a club owner is perfectly in his right to exclude those he deems unfit to mingle with his club members as long as such exclusion is not based on race or gender. These club rules are well known all over the world and more particularly in the UK. In this particular case, The Sporting Club has never refused entry to a Sri Lankan or Philippino as such but to those who accompany children feeling that parents should take care of their own children As such I can only applaude the Sporting Club courageous attitude that aims to preserve the tranquility of its beachgors while at the same time taking a dim view towards those families that treat their househelp as surrogate guardians of their children. |

What approach? I agree with what Waleed said based on how things are today. If you really want to know my "approach" it is that I live in today's reality where those who have money and power can put limits on my access to nature and charge a fee for what I should have access to for free as a Lebanese. But then that's a different story. |

Dear reader,
First Sporting has been a decent place for very long years and I dont like to see maids taking care of kids on the beach when their mothers should be enjoying their motherhood for some time. Second I hope that religious issues wont be mentioned on blogs if we dont another civil war . Please grow up because we had enough blood in this poor country. |

Gigi, as long as hezbo maintains a separate army within a "legitimate" state, a civil war will be looming. The state is no different today than it was before the civil war when the kataeb and others were maintaining their weapons and secret army. Lebanon has learned nothing. Nothing has changed. |

I think many people are missing the point. The BBC article quotes the manager of the Sporting club who says, on the record, that their policy can be considered discrimination but that's what they choose to do.
I have personally stopped going to the club since the article came out, and so have many of my friends. All of us will continue to boycotting the club and spreading the message. I don't see why a woman cant go to the club on her day off, just because she is of certain colour or race. Its a disgusting and truly shameful policy! |
||||
it is still discrimination, no matter how you look at it. the only rules that cannot be term as discrimination are 1)clubs/beach that require membership 2) admittance of 18+ only because of maybe nudity. this are in line with state law. if i may ask, if i come with my wife and my 12 years old daughter with a LEBANESE MAID? will there be an exception? |

Balze, were you never exposed to the concept of respectful exchange? Obviously not; obviously too, you're not interested in this, right? OK. Just saying: It's acting silly when you start with introductory comment that are not conducive to an exchange; to quote, "is it your hobby to show people your stupidity?" C'mon blazex: who would want to read anything if you start your post/reply like that. Maybe what you say further is interesting--maybe great history--... BUT THE WAY YOU START, calling people names and stuff puts you in positions, maybe corners. Anyway, do you want to talk or are you just here to b.s.? |
