yep, i really like it too...so i know how hard it is to dig up the willpower to quit.
I started the full dose of Chantix yesterday, and smoked 5 cigs...i'm a former 2-pack-daily smoker. I have smoked all of my adult life..and i have realized i am losing a friend. However, this friend is also making it difficult to breathe, and could cause me to get cancer or other deadly diseases...not a very good friend, yanno?
Today i plan on not smoking even ONE!:)
Hi Carole, I tried posting to you earlier but looks like the cyber eaters got it. Won't go over it again just in case it shows up.
Hope you were able to stick to your plan of,"not smoking even ONE!" I had my LAST cig. Friday @8:00 pm. It hasn't been as hard as I feared. Just the thought of stopping would send my heart racing. So "living" through the actual stop is a mileston for me.LOL
I need to find some other way to reward myself mentaly other than cigs. Any suggestions?
Good luck to US ALL!

Read your article and thanks because I get some many reactions to medications.I also took zyban and the ambulance had to take me to the emergency room, zyban gave my body a real bad reaction. So reading you article I'm going to assume this pill is safe, quit before for 7 days with the gum didn't work. I hope this works.

HI,
New to the site and have been smoke free for over a month or so now. It's not important to me to the count the days I've been smoke free but the days I will continue to be smoke free.
I did use Chantix which did work with the physical addiction. The emotional addiction was tough but I have mostly conquered that. I'm always on my guard. On the website for Chantix in a very small paragraph for medical professional they state there may be mild physical dependence. Mild dependence? Within 48 hours of weaning myself off Chantix I went through a day where is was 3 times worse than my worse PMS or menapausal day. My house, my family were lucky to have survived! I been 3 years post menapausal was was shocked at my behavoir which I can only attribute to the withdrawal from the Chantix. The fog is starting to lift from the brain and my energy level is just starting to return. Yes, Chantix is great but I believe they are glossing over some of the side effects and withdrawal. My question is why 3 months of Chantix? My impression was that Nicotine leaves your system in less than a week. Are we trading one physical addiction for another?

I kind of get that impression of an addition to Chantix. Yesterday was my first day off Chantix, which I was on 6 weeks, the last 2 weeks were weaning off. Many of the side effects seem to be the same as how one feels going cold turkey off cigs. I think my physician was right with saying only use the starter pack. My husband is weaning to a half pill a day. He did one pill a day last week. I am getting my energy back and my concentration level is better. I hope the Chantix gets out of my system in a hurry.

Chantix was indeed a miracle for me to quit smoking, but it scares me to think of the possible long term effects which have NOT been yet studied...

after 6 weeks my 1st day of not smoking anything was yesterday and it was plain HELL. i had to go to a dallas cowboys football game and i couldn't even drink because it makes me want to smoke. i can't eat because after i eat it makes me want to smoke. those are my triggers eating and drinking so if i can exist with no food or drinks i may make it. in addition, i am so constipated i can't see straight i've taken all kinds of laxatives and nothing works except if i go and have a cigarette. any advise?

Becky,
Ah ha! I'll have to agree that not wanting to quit can be a problem when trying to quit. Ok, here's a different message for you:
If you haven't gotten chronic bronchitis yet, where you're spending a lot of your time during the day and night bent over a wastebasket, coughing, gagging, and drooling while trying to breath, think about how that will be for you if you contine to smoke. Also, when you get chronic bronchitis and start coughing real often, you could also end up with some cracked ribs, which makes it almost impossible to cough without feeling like someone is sticking a knife into you.
I can almost guarantee that, if you don't quit smoking, this is what it will be like for you. I went through all of the above for several months last year, it got better for a few months, and then it started up again in early June of this year. That's when I decided I had to just quit, so I filled my Chantix prescription on June 13th, started taking the pills, and on the night of July 2nd, I smoked the last 1/2 of a cigarette -- and I had been able to reduce by 1/2 the number of cigs I smoked every few days after June 13th, so by July 2nd, I was only smoking one cigarette per day. There were about four or five times in the following week when I smoked two or three drags about every two days when the cravings were really strong, but I've been able to get past any cravings since then.
I'm so glad that I finally made this decision after 39 years. I may want a cigarette right now, but I know that if I start smoking again, I will eventually end up where I was last summer...bent over a wastebasket, coughing and drooling, trying to breathe, while pushing on whichever rib was cracked at the time so that I could cough without feeling those stabbing pains. And this process is just the first stage of what happens when you smoke all your life. I've heard it can be much worse if it turns into lung cancer. I don't want to spend the last several weeks and months of my life lying in a hospital bed, barely breathing, hacking, etc, etc...
I know that you can do this. Please watch the following video, if you haven't seen it yet:
Thanks, Tobacco: You Killed My Mom

Best of luck to you!
deb i went one day yesterday and 1/2 today i am just dying here. i am so constipated i can't see straight. i had a horrible time at the dallas cowboys game because i couldn't smoke. i just want to cry i can't concentrate at work. i don't know what to do. i'd rather be smoking

Becky,

I ditto what Teresa just said. First, you have to WANT to quit. It is going to be hell, but so worth it. I used the little red straws to mimic smoking, it really helped! You have so much time invested, I hope you can start to see all the POSITIVES that you are doing for yourself. I bet that 100% of us would be smoking if it weren't for the THE DEADY SIDE EFFECTS.

A GREAT BIG CONGRATULATIONS ON 1 DAY NOT SMOKING...I FEEL GREAT FOR YOU!!! YIPPEE!!!!! HOORAY!!!!

As for the constipation thing, it is NOT THE CHANTIX, it is LACK of nicotine. Nicotine is a laxative, antidepressant, and many more things. Find some links on what this powerful drug can do to your body. BE CAREFUL WITH THE LAXATiVES, A LOT OF FRUIT AND WATER SHOULD HELP. IT WILL TAKE A WHILE for your body to adjust. A lot of good things are going on that you probably haven't noticed. Your blood pressure is going down, and much more...go check it out!

Remember, the real addiction is the mental and physical one. After 4 months I noticed it getting sooooo much better. You are giving yourself the best gift anyone can give themselves...good health, without our health we have nothing.

The best of luck to you Becky...keep us posted!!!

Becky-
You will get through this. For the no go problem- Get a bottle of Magnesium Citrate. Drink it & I promise you, it will work. Start getting lots of fiber, drink lots of water. It gets easier. Your body is going to have to re train itself on how to function without nicotine. I ate 4-5 small meals er day so I could digest easier. You might want to get a benifiber pill or citracell type fiber thing going. Hang in there!
thanks i'll go buy that magnesium citrate now. i drink tons and tons of water and take all kinds of fiber as i have IBS anyway. to compound everything i really do not want to quit. i'm just insane right now. with working and the stress here i don't know how long i can keep from smoking. how long is it hell like this?

Becky,

Hang in there! I, too, do not want to quit smoking, but I know it's the best thing for me. I guess that's what we have to keep telling ourselves!

I'm only on my third day of Chantix, tomorrow I go to 2 pills. Hopefully, I'll start feeling some of the benefits soon.

But it's true. You can always talk yourself into smoking if you really want to. That's why i posted the link to the video. That speaks volumes. Much more than any of us can.

Greetings!
I started using Chantix 2 weeks ago and and as of 8:00 pm I have just completed my first 24 hours smoke and nicotine free. Today was the first time in 24 years that I did not wake up and reach for the cigarettes. I have tried cold turkey, patches, Welbutrin (severe allergic reaction), lozenges (made me sick to the stomach), and gum (yuck!).

Chantix did help me cut down during the past week from 1-1/2 packs per day to a handful per day leading up to yesterday. Today went ok for the most part except my skin is really crawling now, however I really don't have a taste for them. I believe Chantix will make the difference this time.

I think I will take a walk, watch some MNF, and hit the hay. Looking forward to Day 2!

i bought the magnesium caltrate and even some suppositories. we'll give that a shot. WHAT ABOUT NOT BEING ABLE TO SLEEP? i've been taking 2 excedrin pm's every night and sometimes a sleep right along with it and i still never sleep through the night. i'm lucky if i get 4 hours it is so difficult to work. i have been working out for years several times a week, always have drank tons of water there's not more working out i can do. i refuse to gain weight or i know i would go back to smoke. I'M NOT EATING MUCH AT ALL I CAN'T BECAUSE IT MAKES THE CRAVING UNBEARABLE! honestly, i don't think i can get through this coming weekend without smoking at a tailgating party univ of michigan vs notre dame game. i may get fired soon because i'm ready to beat the shit out of someone do you know what i mean??????

I have not started taking the Chantix yet in fear of slipping into a Depression. I have heard from every person that has taken this drug that they felt extremely depressed. One guy friend of mine is the happiest person I know. He stopped taking the drug because he had thoughts of SUICIDE!!! That really scares me and feel like people should know about these stories. Does anyone know about a shot that doctors are giving for smokers?

Hello Becky,

You must have had a reason for getting Chantix in the beginning, what was it? YOU CAN GET THROUGH this weekend if you WANT too. Let us know why you choose to take Chantix in the first place, and you have made it 2 days WITHOUT SMOKING, right?? I think this is awesome! I understand not wanting to gain weight, but let's get real. You and I both know a few pounds are much better than smoking. I, like many on this board, smoked for MANY years, 35+. It has not been easy for us, but we wanted to quit. Truthfully, some days were hell, but the big picture made it worth it. Again, why did you want to quit, why did you go on the Chantix...remember the reason... If you are having that hard of a time with anger, please talk to your doctor....I truly think you are in the nicotine withdrawal part. The first week is called "Hell" week...YOU CAN DO IT!!!

I hope can relate to these quotes.....

1.) I'd rather be a non-smoker with an occasional desire to smoke than a smoker with a constant desire to quit.

2.) If you smoke today, you will be back where you started, and where you started is desperately wanting to be where you are today.

For sleeping, take a hot bath, read a book, get the tylenol P.M. w/o the tylenol, I think it is called Simply Sleep, you can go online and check it out plus print a coupon for it.

Do lots of DEEP BREATHING, slow and deep, get the straws, shake up your routine. Your health is so much more valuable than a tailgate party. You have to like yourself, it sounds like you do because you have been working out for years.

THINK POSITIVE, THINK POSITIVE, THINK POSITIVE!!!!
