Susan, seriously, did u ever go to AC? If you weren't too worried about being obese or getting diabetes you're wheelchair wouldn't have stopped you.(see Gramalady#13)Singleton is exploiting the law and hurting plenty of people while lining his pockets. His own quote, "I get paid regardless of the outcome." He doesn't care about your rights, just his bank account.

What a great example of terrible writing by a newspaper!
So, the T-S knows more about this issue
than an agancy who deals with every single day?
You all know more than I do? I only spend MY life IN a wheelchair!
What could I possibly know about it?
I know this:
22 violations. TWENTY-TWO!
Requests to make the place accessible- IGNORED. For 10 Years.
Warnings- IGNORED.
This is why people finally sue. Its not Singleton. Its not even someone with a disability.
Its a business that refuses to comply with the law!
If this were fire extinguishers, or people smoking outside the entrance, you would all be screaming
"WHY didnt they get sued sooner!!!"
But you would rather pretend YOU will never face the challenge of a disability, and see what its like to try and move about, or get served, or find a job or place to live- while lugging around a wheelchair!!
Or oxygen tank, or cane, or....
Alot of people here might want to THINK a minute before they go screaming about how
'unfair' this was!
The biggest problem with our local system, city and county agencies and those representing the disabled, very few get the ones they serve involved in making meaningful changes. this is why, as you state, the T/S believes they know more about the issue.

You should try going to the county Risk Manager or the county building inspecter and offer your experience in regards to access and how to make new buildings or businesses "reasonable accessible". They smile and never contact you again and avoid your participation because they believe they know what is right or wrong for the disabled.

They do not understand, no one disability is the same; just as in our community of the so-called abled, no one is the same. Locals need to provide for avenues of the disabled to be involved publicly, not behind the doors or separated and within groups representing the disabled such as the Tri-county Independent Living Center, Redwood Coast Regional Center or Easter Seals. These are support groups to enabled the disabled, not to limit them through community prejudices.

The ADA is the Law, is was formed to give the disabled an arm in representing themselves in getting "reasonable accommodations". This we all agree, and lawsuits should be of a last resort and no one should profit from them.

I was reading an article in the Northcoast Journal regarding the ADA and the lawyer represented in this issue. The Chamber of Commerce Manager stated they had to mark the bathroom for "Employees Only". What a way to serve visitors to our area.

There are ways of providing access to our community that do not have to hurt anyone. But if the community does not work with the disabled in solving the need for better access, more problems in the future will develop. No one this.

Dear puhleez,
THANK YOU! for accusing me of being in a chair due to
being obese!? What a kind person YOU must be!
FYI- I was born with polio. But I guess in your world- Thats probably my own fault too!
I pay taxes, run a business- ADA compliant by the way- raised two wonderful kids, and educate myself on the law.
And when did I DEFEND Singleton???
I said this place HAD been warned- REPEATEDLY.
And was found, after noting 22 violations, to have done nothing to address the LAW. Nothing.
But, like the sad sack calling himself 'ADA', YOU dont have to live your life with a disabling condition, so I guess that means you know all about what its like huh?
No sane person is going to defend 'frivolous' lawsuits, but in this case it seems everyone has already decided what went down here, yet very few really do.
Yes- a lawsuit SHOULD be the last resort.
THIS WAS.

Wow! You must have whole different understanding of God's will than many others. Or, you just have no self-respect for yourself. Because you surely don't demonstrate any respect for others.

Wow, What a crew of bigots that have to run down persons with disabilities to feel better about themselves.

Thank you Mr. Singleton for helping the disabled community to gain access in California. These hateful comments are a reccomendation. If you did not do a good job for your clients and enforce their civil rights they would still be second class citizens. These bigots like ADA would still burn crosses on black persons lawns and deny equal payment and voting rights for women. Keep up the good work and I will use your services if I need them when I visit Eureka.

Thanks again Janson All Americans benifit from your tireless work to stop these injustices and you deserve the money you earn.

When asked about the Arcata Open Door Clinic, she said, "They're OK. They don't have any serious problems."

She hadn't sued them?

"No," she said. "Why would you think I would have sued them?"

On Monday, Open Door's risk manager, Christopher Peters, said they were served with Miller's complaint April 15.

INDEED, why can't they? Or, alternatively, eat somewhere else. If they are willing to sue to close the restaurant and not be able to eat there anyway why not just skip that process and eat at BK or wherever? There's always meals on wheels...

when are the disabled going to realize and accept they are NOT like us and never will be?

There is only so much accommadation that should be enforced and beyond that, get over it and accept your limitations and stfu.

I am saddened there are so many evil, unthinking
and uncaring people here.

The Karma you oh-so-superior 'able-bodied' are bringing on yourselves is truly terrifying.

I suspect many of you wouldnt last A DAY fighting the battles these people face every single moment.

You should be ashamed.

And Karma WILL get you...oh, yes, it will!

I thought it was hackers, I was told it was hackers. And then it was people going to be spitting on me, and then after that, or before, I was going to have people in wheelie chairs RAISE UP and KICK MY ASS.

I thought it was all of the above, now I have to worry about Karma? Damn. Better make a list.

You have a very good point, and this is why the term "reasonable accommodation" should and is used in most cases. In fact, in the articles written regarding the ADA, not once did they mention "reasonable accommodation" and this is a problem.

It is a problem, because the ADA does allow for various types of reasonable accommodation. But, if a business or government agency chooses not to make any changes there is a problem that is raised by individuals that seem to have a hair tickling them and they sue - which in my opinion is too bad.

I just don't do business with places I have a difficulty with. A few in Old Town, a few around the Plaza, the local private Employment services. They only lose a dollar from me, no big deal. I spend it elsewhere, as others should do if they come across a barrier or just poor attitudes.

I also shop where access is not totally there, why, because the individuals are willing to help when needed - they provide reasonable accommodation and customer service that demonstrates respect.

In truth, if folks remember reading, the Arctic Circle has been operating in the red for the past three years. So, in their frustration they closed and looking for a place to put the blame it was placed on the ADA. Which is too bad this was the tool used to relieve the frustration and the media and many others posting here recognized.

It is also hard to understand, why some one from out of the community filed the complaint? Rio Dell? How often did this individual patronize this establishment?

It is like the suit filed against a couple businesses in Willow Creek a few years ago. An individual not from the area filed a complaint and a lawyer jumped in, causing ard feelings towards disabled that made the community their home.

We have a community of disabled here in Eureka that I honestly feel does not agree with this kind of action. We believe there are other methods and ways around so-called barriers placed to provide reasonable accomodation.

Yes, the ADA is the Law and it should be followed within reason. It should only lead to a lawyer's involvement when a large business or government that receives public funding is not following it - You lawsuit happy people should take another look at the County courthouse. Start the fight there, not with small business.

To Mr 'ADA' and the other "gimp-haters" here-

Tomorrow, Saturday, there will be a BIG rally at the courthouse.

I will be there, along with my daughter (who is disabled) and plenty of other 'gimps'.

I cordially invite YOU to come on by, and say these things to us IN PERSON. We should have a very interesting conversation, dont you think?

Unless you are, as seems sure, a COWARD.

Oh, and by the way- be sure to bring your bible,
so you can point out to my 9 year old where it says Gods will towards the disabled is to be one of hatred and disdain!!!

PLEASE! Be There!

Why is there going to be a rally? What exactly are you protesting? If it's Singleton's missuse of the law, good. If you are supporting his actions, I'd think twice, there are (ADA is a perfect example) people who have no logic and no remorse in this town that wouldn't think twice (if at all) about tossing an egg or two from a moving vehicle.

Susan, you seemed pissed off with the world that you are in a wheelchair instead of being happy you are alive. So you don't have the ability to walk, but you do have the ability to love, show compassion but you choose to look at your inconvenience as a negative instead of a positive. I am disabled, and choose to look at life with a positive attitude, if these places do not want to change then why do I want to go and give them my hard earned dollars, I go somewhere else. In the wild the weak are devoured by thier preditors, you Susan are weak and are devoured by your disability. Look at your disability as a positive, change yourself for the better and enjoy life instead of always trying to figure out how to make others miserable like you. This doesn't just go for Susan, but for all you self pittied disabled people who feel life has dealt you a bad hand because you are in a wheelchair. Disabilites are in your head not your body, just because your body doesn't function like everybody else doesn't make you disabled. Those that have had their jobs taken away are now disabled although they are not in a wheelchair, they have had something taken away from them like you who think your disabled because you are in a wheelchair. It is time TO CHANGE the way you think about your disabilities.

Saturday, May 10 at 11 a.m., the rally/march is to protest proposed budget cuts to Medi-cal, In-Home Support Service, Mental Health and other "people" programs that address needs of the disabled and Seniors of our community.

This event has nothing to do with the ADA case mentioned in the newspaper, but deals with cut coming from the State, which all will feel, as demonstrated in the Eureka City School's cuts.

How strange you got all that from my letter!

I think there must be some strange 'defensiveness'
going on here- on YOUR part!

I was angry at the unthinking cowardly posters on here, sure! Who wouldnt be?

But 'sorry for myself'? Where do you get that from? If you fight an injustice, youre a 'whiner'?

Does it ever occur to you that fighting a battle may be worthwhile for the next person? Your kids?
Someone else you may never meet, can now get into a doctors office, thanks to something you fought for?

I married, had kids, run a business. I travel, and enjoy life!
I also appreciate the opportunities those with disabilities have in the state and country.

But if you think for one moment I will quit fighting to be recognized as a capable human being, when, as you can see from some of these posts, the world is still full of ignorant and hateful little minds, well sorry!

I will make people aware. And I will continue to work to make the world a better place for everyone,
wether or not they have a disability!
