The great topic, but the major problem is still not highlighted. The problem is the operating system installed on the "botnets" - Microsoft Windows, which is almost helpless against viruses, spyware, etc. by its design. The other operating systems could also become victims, but they have a great history of fixing security bugs ASAP.

Exactly....why is the US utilizing Windows, which has numerous known disabilities, but other operating systems such as Linux, MAC, OS and BSD tend to be more hardened against such attacks....although, nothing is perfect.
Could it be something about a money making corporate agreement with the Govmt? Nawwwww

So, what they're saying is that banks and e-commerce web sites have more experience dealing with cyber attacks than our government anti-cyber attack force? Great!

So, I really can't be sure if my computer was part of this, right?

Oh yeah, your computer was definitely involved here, I can see the guilt all over its monitor.

You're just gonna have to fess up and turn your computer over to the local authorities for a hard drive cavity search. Yes, its painful and humiliating, but those are the breaks.

Resistance is futile, you WILL be absorbed by the Borg.

Why is it that we can't hear about the awesome attacks that our government was able to prevent? The only things we hear about are instances of complete failure.

If Mac or Linux becomes the main OS, trust me, their vulnerabilities will be exposed. The only reason Microsoft is attacked is because, for now, they dominate.

I say this as an Apple MacBook Air fanatatic and iPhone user.

The most important thing you should have learned from this article:

Botnets. If you do not use anti virus with current definitions, and patch Windows regularly, you are likely infected with viruses just having surfed the web. Today's viruses don't make your computer do odd things. Most just sit and wait for orders from people like this. If you haven't been taking proper care of your computer, you could likely be a part of this attack.

Do us all a favor and scan your computer tonight. And use something real, not some fake Chinese antivirus.

Here's a question... can the other countries of the world, in cooperiation with ICANN, shut down N.Korea's access to the internet by removing their connections to the backbone servers?

Of course, that would require China's participation, and that's not very likely.

Good luck on that working for you. My last computer was taken over to the point the operating system was corrupted. Programs were being installed that I did not put on the computer. The memory on the computer become full, so they were sending something over the internet. Tried 3 different security suites, not one could fix it. In store service couldn't figure it out. Contacted Microsoft and their answer was that it was the fault of the software makers. Finally just gave up and bought a new computer.

Somebody in our government needs to hold Microsoft responsible. We need a least a hearing in the Senate. The extra media coverage might make microsoft actually fix their own product instead of blaming others.

Bill Gates may want to get out of his pool with speakers built in under the water and fix his third rate product.

you gave up because you had virus on your computer??? You're either lazy or stupid. You could have just reformatted...that will cure 99% of the problems. Of course you lose your crap, but that's a minor inconvenience if you're smart and back stuff up semi regularly.

If you have that old computer still, there are two much cheaper ways to save it.

First, probably a reformat of the hard drive and a reinstallation will cure it. If you don't have recovery disks (argh, I HATE the computer places that don't send recovery disks), call Dell, HP, whatever and have them send them to you.

There's the possibility that a simple reformat might not solve this, especially say if it is a Dell, which does some magic with hidden partitions. A Dell specialist should be able to resolve that.

Or, buy a new hard drive and stick it in. Cheaper than a new computer.

And why do most Americans like PC's so much? One you go Mac, you'll never go back! David Gates needs to go back to school.

Daily Horoscope for December 9

Sagittarius

Watch out. Your mind is working overtime in full analytical mode, but you may be leaping to unfounded conclusions and reading too much into situations. The result of all this is that you might start to suspect someone's honesty or loyalty, and wonder what exactly they're up to. Don't accuse them of anything awful just yet because it may turn out that you were totally wrong about them.
