Lowell celebrates its Southeast Asian influence

For many, it was war, oppression and genocide that mobilized groups of Southeast Asians to leave the land of their fathers and mothers and travel across an ocean and a continent to settle in Lowell.

I love my southeast asian brothers and sisters...I hope they feel at home here in the city. Lowell's a better place with them here!

Well, it's true...I think of how brutal it must've been to come to a totally foreign place under horrifying circumstances...people don't think about that. Lowell's always been a place for people looking for a new life.

A lot of people snark and say horrible things but truth be told the 2nd generation southeast asians have had it real hard having to grow up too fast and be responsible...just trying to help their parents survive...but I think overall the southeast asian community has been a fantastic addition to the diversity of the city.

100 years ago the Irish were griping about my french-canadian descendants being low class, taking over their jobs, schools etc...but this city always adjusts and those who stay here stay for a reason.

Being a 2nd generation SE Asian, I totally agree with you, Cool. We all work hard to support and take care of our parents and elders because we were given a better opportunity and life, the least we can do is give back to them.
It's so nice to be able to read nice positive comments rather than just being labeled and slammed all the time. I hope your comments open up the eyes of the ignorant!:)

I for one think the southeast asians are great. They work hard and are really kind and caring people. The gangs shouldn't be confused with the good decent people. As with all new people to an area, it will take awhile for them to be accepted by everyone. But take a few minutes to talk to them and I think peoples feelings will change. Some of our children could learn something from the way they care for and respect their parents.

No matter what race you are, there will always be a few rotten apples from the bunch. But yeah, it should not ruin it for those who are good and decent.

I got jumped by a SE asian gang when I was in HS, but if anything it just made me more prejudiced against punks. Gangs have been around for decades, it's just a way for an ethnic group to protect and insulate itself against others who may not understand or accept their culture and beliefs. They tend to shrink and disappear the more integrated they become into the general population.

Truth is Lowell wouldn't be here today if not for the SE asian immigration. They moved into the areas of the city that others wouldn't and made it nicer. Now some are becoming more involved in the political scene and community, I think it's great.

I for one am sick and tired hearing how wonderful the southeast asians are ,and how much they have accomplished, while reading about the rapes, murders, and criminal law breaking.
I won't sing their praises till the southeast asians clean up their own problems!

One good article and you're upset??

What about the other races?? White people, black people, hispanic, asians, they all commit crimes. There are rape, murders and other crimes that are committed by people of all races.

"I for one am sick and tired of hearing" people like you complain b/c certain people committed crimes. DO NOT STEREOTYPE AN ENTIRE RACE ON THE ACTIONS OF A FEW PEOPLE! Did you get that yet?

Thank you.

You said it Nina! Most of my sons friends are Asian and they're good kids. Any one of them would give you the shirt off their back if you needed it. All they ever talk about are their cars and the latest X=box and play station games. They steer clear of the gangs just like the rest of us.

Its about time the SUN prints something out that portrays Southeast Asians in a positive light. Most of us are hard working people. More and more of us are getting involved with politics, the community, and I see alot of kids applying to colleges. A few bad apple doesn't ruin the whole orchard.

I have to say I'm proud to be a Cambodian living in Lowell and I walk with my head high.
When you look back on the history of Lowell this city was built by the backs of immigrants. From Irish, Polish, Greek immigrants to French-Canadians, Portugese, Southeast Asians, Brazilians, and now welcoming West Africans.

Lowell has a place for everybody and the characteristics of Lowell is what makes this city unique.

Highlands,
Get out of where you are at and take a good look of where you are. For once let US hard working, law abiding Cambodian American get this once in a lifetime glory. Enough already. I'm tired of people like you that are closed minded.

Thanks for that article, Truth. Lowell is indeed a very diverse population, so for those who can't handle it, I say- go find yourself a new home.

I could understand the celebration if it wasn't for the crime that the Asian routinely commits. daily news about some Asian breaking the law doesn't give me a warm and fuzzy feeling for them.

Ponce, if you feel that way then I guess you should be feeling the same way toward all the other races, including your own!

I think you need to read Sanny's comment:

"What about the other races?? White people, black people, hispanic, asians, they all commit crimes. There are rape, murders and other crimes that are committed by people of all races.

"I for one am sick and tired of hearing" people like you complain b/c certain people committed crimes. DO NOT STEREOTYPE AN ENTIRE RACE ON THE ACTIONS OF A FEW PEOPLE! Did you get that yet?

Please, go through the arrest logs and show me all these routine crimes that the 'Asian' is committing...or are they too smart to get arrested??? LOL!
