GOOD. OUR CHILDREN DESERVE QUALITY TEACHERS.
This is the kind of stuff you get when the legislature gets loaded up with teachers.
I want to know what idiot authored this bill.
Also would like to know why so many in the congress and the senate didn't even vote on it. |
Well, the governor isn't as big an idiot as I thought he was -- well, at least on this issue. Ridiculous bill that never should have gotten to his desk!

Good job Mitch!
Our education system is bad enough without lowering requirements to please the teachers union. It would really be great if he could "veto" the teachers union also, that would have a immediate benefit to our government education system. |
Good call, Governor! If the children are handcuffed by standardized testing, the least the teachers can do is pass a licensing exam for their profession. In the long term, it's better for the profession.

the state should stop worrying about and paying for education. all education should be private, allowing for competition in the marketplace.
Oh come on, let them be teachers. Any good Democrat would have signed the bill.
Whew. I'm a teacher and I can say that from experience in education classes there are a LOT of idiots who think they should be teachers. If you can't pass the test (which is not at all difficult), you shouldn't be allowed to teach.
People cry about how little we're paid, but if it's going to be THAT easy to be a teacher, there's no reason for higher pay. The law that *should* be passed is one that allows school boards and administrators to easily fire teachers who don't like kids, can't teach, and are just "putting in time" until they die at their desk! |
Hooray for the Governor...
How many professions actually let people work who cannot pass the exam? |
Why don't we Hoosiers begin a trend and invite private companies to compete to educate our kids?
Private schools and charter schools are succeeding while public schools are failing at keeping our kids up with the rest of the industrialized world. We cannot afford to slip further behind! Educating girls and boys separately has been proven to raise grades of both, as has school uniforms.(Not the absurd psudo uniform of IPS - one style and color of pant, shirt, etc. should be the requirement). Governor Danials was 100% right to veto this bill! |
The exams are easy. If you can't pass them I don't want you teaching my kids. What's next ---- no bar exam?!?!
As we all know teachers and social workers have
the lowest graduate qualifying exams. Letting them get away with lower standards is lunacy. Make the qualifying to teach more strident and watch the achievement levels of kids rise. |
Our schools are in enough disarray. I am glad this was vetoed. What is the point of a test if all you have to do is say I had a good GPA and here are some letters from some of my teachers that like me? This bill would just be a continuation of the dumbing down of Indiana.
BTW...parents need to take an active role in their child's education. |

Look what else is waiting on the Governor's Desk for his signature:
House Bill 1164 50% Property tax deduction for model residences. House Bill 1145 Provides that a county may transfer real property for which the county holds a tax deed to an abutting landowner for no consideration or nominal consideration. House Bill 1153 Expansion of gambling including euchre card games, pull tabs, punchboards, and tip boards at all taverns. Rewards criminals that had illegal cherry masters or pea shakes. CALL THE GOVERNORS OFFICE AND DEMAND A VETO ON ALL OF THESE BILLS! Mitch Daniels http://www.in.gov/gov/2310.htm Bills Sent to Governor for signing or veto. http://www.in.gov/gov/3246.htm |

Short answer: Politics, especially legislators... |
I agree with the veto, but don't be surprised about the quality of intellect that wants to be teachers. Long hours (they are salaried, so there's stuff they have to do besides teach 8-3, August-June), and low pay compared to the amount of education you require leads to a small talent pool from which to draw.
So, we need higher pay (not likely), better working conditions, lower standards, or we have to get used to the idea of 35 kids in a classroom. |
Why not an intiative where people in the workforce can teach high school kids in certain subjects? What better way to get real world ideas and the latest knowledge? Schools are horribly behind the real world and don't prepare kids to head to college with an idea of what they want to study further.
Yeah right, no bar exam. That'll be the day. The graduate school qualifying exams aren't that hard either but teachers seem to clog the left side of the bell curve on that one too. Low GRE after they become credentialed. What does that tell you? They had other choices like social worker or telemarketing. Poor excuse for achievement starts with the teacher. |
Is this like we have a law against illegal aliens, but we do nothing? Why can't the Midget Mitch and Dumb Dems do something about illegal aliens? I wonder if they are getting kickbacks somewhere.... |
