Everyone makes bad judgment calls, and hard lessons learned are the ones we remember most. I hope this young woman will accept and adapt with ease.

Why would anyone be so mean-spirited to pray for something like that? Perhaps praying that she (and some of these others) learn compassion would be more productive and Christian.

What difference is there if people know her name? It is a tragic situation no matter what.

People should also not just focus on the fact that she lost a breast. She most likely lost considerable muscle tissue on that side of her chest, under her arm, around her shoulder, etc. which will effect her strength and coordination requiring a good deal of rehabilitation before she can be self-sufficient again.

Bloody wank. As an 18-year-old not only would I be glad to be alive, I would *also* be upset to be loosing something considered a mark of womanhood. You can't criticize her for being upset over loosing a part of her body. Tell a man who just lost his arm in a car wreck not to be upset over that, and to just be glad to be alive. We all do stupid things in different degrees. Shame on all of you who criticize her and her family.

This young woman had every right to have her breasts pierced as many women fo. She is an adult and needs no permission likewise the newspapers would need the young womans permission not her parents to publish her story. Fact is this may be a little known fact among people about diabetes and may prevent others from going through the same ordeal.

Sam..No disrespect... but under Indiana State Law.... they can't publish her name or story with out her or her parent's permission... so i beleive that they wanted in the media...
Parents have nothing to do with an 18 year old adult.

My only thought on this is why did it take her almost a month and a half to get help with the infection???
It had to hurt and have drainage for all that time... how could she have let it continue without having it looked it???

I don't wish harm upon anyone but seriously, getting your breast pierced has got to be the silliest mess. I don't feel sorry for people who do silly stuff like this and plastic surgery and then wonder why things went bad. We all make mistakes but lets be real, this is just silly. For the record, 18 may be the legal age of adulthood but many of us still listened to our parents at that age. I doubt her mother was stongly against. Silly, just silly.

While caring for my dying, elderly father in 2004, I contracted Necrotizing Fasciitis. He had several infections, including MRSA, which is most likely what turned into NF in my system.

And, I didn't even have an open wound! The bacteria entered through the hair follicles and/or the pores of my skin!

I lost my entire right armpit, lymph nodes, most of my right arm and a small part of my right breast. No bone was lost, but I lost a lot of muscle and other tissue, had to have a huge skin graft surgery to close the areas and now my arm is grossly disfigured FOREVER.

It is my fondest hope that people will wake up and start taking the word INFECTION seriously!

Educate yourselves about your bodies and stop getting unnecessary cosmetic surgical procedures, body piercing and tattoos, especially if you are diabetic! Diabetes causes wounds to heal slowly, which gives the bacteria a larger window of time to enter your body and more time to take hold, then turn into something far worse.

Leave the girl alone, for gods sakes. People make mistakes. Especially teens who just enter "adulthood" at 18. There is one thing about voicing your opinion but completely degrading someone because they have piercings, is wrong. Who are you to judge whats stupid and what is normal?
