I too are in a similar situation, my husband is on the list and we just bought a beautiful home, and we checked and were clear of all schools, but later found out after buying the home we are in a 1000 feet of a school. We now have to sale our home and my husband is living somewhere else and we are paying one house payment and rent somewhere else. I understand the threat, but come on if a predatory really want to get a child 1000 feet is not going to stop them. My husband did not touch a child is on the list for gratification in public while he was drunk. I did nothing wrong and I am being punished everyday as well as him.

Did you know about this before you married him?

That is why the recent changes, implemented by the legislature, requiring all imprisoned sex offenders to complete counseling before being eligible for release is a step toward greater community safety. During this intensive counseling, the therapist has an opportunity to develop a better picture of the offender's likelihood of reoffending. This is the basis for determining whether civil commitment is necessary.

People make choices in life and have to deal with those choices. This guy made the choice to molest a child and as a result he has to deal with the consequences. The boy he molested had no choice.

Regarding your rant about constitutional rights, every person in this country should have the right to pursue life, liberty and happiness - until they choose to take it away from someone else. This is no different than when Indiana felons lose the right to vote. People make bad choices and have to deal with the repercussions.

And why are you defending child molesters anyway? I'm sure there is a reason.

When one citizen has any of their rights taken away, all citizens lose some of their rights. And that is a very slippery slope that can lead to all types of abuse by the government. Constitutional rights are not something to be taken lightly and certainly are not something that a citizen should suggest should be removed from another group of citizens, regardless of the reasoning. While I find his crime to be horrific I will defend his constitutional rights to my final breath.

...Social justice would be in order, if John or any other scum of the earth child molesters should happen to move into your neighborhood...get your neighbors together and welcome this evil scum to the neighborhood with a cook-out...using his/her house as the grill and make sure that they are cooked all the way through and feed them to the vicious pitbulls that are roaming our streets.

"IF" hes a trhreat he'd be a threat anywhere. Chances are highly that he is not a repeat offender, regardless to all the hate mongering, uneducated voices out there. State Rep. Foley is 100% correct, MOST of those on sex offender registry's simply made a mistake with a minor and are not remotely predators or real pedephiles. People do make mistakes, including ones of a sexual nature and only the very smallest of numbers are threats to children and society. America must learn to use common sense, psychological experts and modify laws that permanently are punitive. geesh, manslaughter convicts get far less time and punishment than someone who engaged in sex with a minor (often a very willing minor, altho still illegal).

I think the sex registry law should not be valid. It just penalize someone forever for maybe only one mistake. If they are truly not reformed then yes but otherwise no.
Id say let him go back to his home and live.
Sorry, this was NOT "a mistake", it was a choice. Most offenders, regardless of their crime, as long as it is premeditated, spend a bit of time preparing for its commission and grooming their victim/target.

Obviously you didn't check THOROUGHLY then, did you? If you knew it was an issue as you say, then you should have been more careful. You have no one to blame for your current situation but yourself - both for being married to a sex offender and for not checking throughly for schools before purchasing a home. No sympathy here. Your husband made the choice to get drunk and gratify himself in public where others - including children - could have seen him. Don't try to pull the "poor, pitiful me" act. If you don't like the consequences of his actions, don't be married to him.

I have an idea. Why doesn't everyone just post a comment saying, "See comment from previous sex offender article" so we don't have to reread the same tired pro and con comments every time the Star posts one of these stories. Same arguments and name calling EVERY time!

I'm in favor of ongoing sentences for child molesters. Let's take a vote.

Everyone for letting the victim/victim's family determine when the child molester gets out of jail say "aye".

First of all, why call him "John Doe"? He is a convicted child molester - that is public record. Why hide his name?

Secondly, he grew up in that house. So what? He lost the right to live where he wants when he violated that little boy!

Last of all, the 1,000 feet law was inacted to protect our children. It should not be changed or disregarded for anyone. Least of all the scum we are protecting the children from.

CHANGE THE LAWS, SEND THEM ALL TO DEATH ROW; MAYBE THEY'LL THINK TWICE ABOUT MOLESTING A POOR CHILD AND RUINING AN INNOCENT LIFE OVER THEIR SICK MINDS!
I feel the same way about armed robbers, they traumatize people, too! Let's execute them. Then how about people who drive recklessly. Off with their heads!

In a free society, we have to be willing to pay for our freedoms. The second we start depriving others of liberty once they have paid their debt to society, or committing them to cruel and unusual punishment, is the second we give up a little freedom ourselves.

There are two quotes we would all be wise to remember:

"The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all." -H.L. Mencken

"hose who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." -Ben Franklin

Yes there is a reason I am defending constitutional rights and that is so you can post remarks that border on slander. It is amazing that many of you think that defending a persons rights is the same as defending the person. How wrong you are. Regardless of what you want to believe the taking of anyones constitutional rights is serious. If you look back through history all despots and dictators started by taking rights little by little until there were none left. In the present day world you only have to look to China and several Middle Eastern countries to see those examples. We would not have the freedom to post to these boards or for that matter would these boards exist under a totalatarian regeime.
