I don't understand why a college who embraced their Catholic Franciscan Values, their small class sizes and their heritage would change their name to "The Marian University". Sure, they have expanded with their MAP programs, having a wet dorm, etc, but the alumni are not going to embrace this. Its like they are taking our past away from us.

I am also an alum... and I don't like the name change. Sure, growth and all that is good for the school... but why not focus on improving rather than expanding? The reason I loved the school so much was because of its small class sizes and community feel. I had so many opportunities that could only be provided by a small college.

I feel like Dan is in it only for the money and the glory.

Your past will never go away, but your school will offer a wonderful future to so many students. Just be happy and proud of what you have been a part of. This truly is a good thing where some change is not good, this definitely is great.

as a former student, there are much more important things than changing your name... this school was awful. completely. half the teachers only cared about thier out of school endeavors, the professors hardly showed to classes, and if u were to complain about this, than yours grades were going to suffer. terrible middle school....

I'm guessing the English profs were the ones skipping classes.

Graduated from there in 1999. It was a great community but many departments were lacking. The college that I knew is dead. My wife and I that met on campus our freshman year could not even use any facility there to get married. Oh well. They used to be the college that mentored and had 113 park like acres. They paved paradise and put in a fountain and some parking lots.

How exciting to see some of the changes on the horizon. I had a wonderful undergraduate experience. However, when applying to graduate school I fell into the difficulty of no one truly recognizing Marian's name. So it's nice to see that the administration is trying to Marian College to the next level. As a proud alum, and financial supporter, I for one am delighted to see this change.

This is just another attempt by Elsner to take away from what Mother Theresa Hacklemier wanted in this college. Way to go Dan! Now we have a football team and a new name. Too bad you had to get rid of the theater department at the "liberal arts college" you're the president of.

The MAP program is a sham. Students pay tens of thousands of dollars for a sub-par education, pushed through the system in a for-profit model. To me, this is indicative of the new direction for The Marian University proper. The MAP program pays teachers $1200 for a five week course. Classes meet once each week for four hours. Students do very little writing or actual projects for class. The teachers are pulled in from all around; some are professors or instructors at other, better, institutions, while some are "working experts" with no teaching experience.

Now,$1200 is pretty good for 20 hours of in-class work, plus some out-of-class grading and prep time. But the money the program brings in unreal. Why would they assert their Franciscan values when there's money to be made. Most of the MAP students, at least, aren't Catholic or interested in that aspect of the school. However, most of them are middle-class workers trying to better themselves, and they don't have $30,000 to waste on a bad education in only 18 months.

In a sharp essay called "Making the Grade," a Georgia Tech professor argues that "the one thing college actually offers -- a chance to learn -- is considered irrelevant, less than worthless, because of the long hours and hard work required."

Plus, let's face it -- "The" Marian University even sounds pretentious. Too bad the programs can't back up the attitude.

If you are considering attending a private university or college in Indiana, or sending one of your children to such a place, stick with DePauw, Wabash, Butler, or a few others, where real teachers do real teaching.

Great news for Marian, its students, faculty, staff and alumni. Congratulations and best wishes for a blessed future in serving the Church in central Indiana. I hope in particular that the University will strongly manifest its Franciscan and Catholic values and beliefs.

Daily Horoscope for January 6

Capricorn

Don't let anyone stand in the way of your progress and don't reveal personal secrets. You could very easily become run down at the moment. An empty promise could leave you feeling sad. If you're working today, there could be some problems: stick to your own work and make sure that someone doesn't try to take credit for your efforts.
