Mumbai: India faces the threat of being downgraded by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for consistently not adhering to the safety standards of the International Civil Aviation Organisation. The result of the downgrade will mean that Jet Airways and Air India, which operate to and from the US, will face stringent security checks when planes land there.
“The Director General of Civil Aviation is lobbying hard with the FAA to buy six months’ time to fall in line with the ICAO norms and prevent India from being downgraded from Category 1 to Category 2,’’ said a source, adding that the FAA team was in Delhi last week for a safety assessment programme.
Category 2 nations are those that violate ICAO norms. As a Category 2 nation, India will join the ranks of Serbia, the Ukraine, Indonesia, Guyana and the like. Pakistan and China are in Category 1.
If downgraded, Air India and Jet will not be able to change or expand their US schedules. Also, other airlines will be unable to start operations there. If there are violations in the case of any Air India or Jet plane, the aircraft can be impounded and a heavy fine levied.

DGCA is not being a regulator: Expert

Mumbai: Reacting to India facing the US Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) heat, air safety consultant Capt A Ranganathan said,“It’s not surprising that the FAA wants to downgrade India. For the last four years, we have not been conforming to ICAO standards and the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has not been functioning as a regulator. For instance, Indian carriers have done three wrong runway landings in the past one-and-a-half years. This could have been prevented had the DGCA carried out proper safety audits.’’
DGCA Nazim Zaidi, who took over recently from K Gohain, was unavailable for comment. In 2006, the ICAO itself had conducted a safety audit of India and found several violations.“India got two out of ten for technical personnel qualification and training, while the global average was four. In safety oversight functions, it got four out of ten while the global average was six,’’ said a source. Ranganathan said,“Falling below the global average means that India has not been carrying out safety audits at the required time and with the required frequency.’’

For all you busy air travellers, here’s information that explains your frustration at Indian airports. Forbes’ list of the most delayed arrival airports in the world for 2008, in association with FlightStats, tracks historical and real-time flight information. Of the top five airports, three are in India — Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai, at No. 1, Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, at No. 2 and Bengaluru International Airport (BIA), Bangalore, at No. 4. The percentage of on-time arrivals at Mumbai airport was 49.95%, at New Delhi was 50.89% and in Bangalore, it was 60.16%. The Mohammed V International Airport, Casablanca, Morocco, occupied the No. 3 slot with an on-time arrival performance of 53.83%.
The report states that at Mumbai’s airport, 58% of late arrivals in 2008 were delayed by 30 minutes or more, and at New Delhi’s airport, more than 60% of flights were at least 30 minutes late. The good news is that no Indian airport figures in the top 10 delayed departure list. Haneda airport in Tokyo tops the list of combined on-time arrival and departure.
“Indian airports are bound to face heavy congestion as the aviation growth in India has been unprecedented. In 2007-08, the aviation growth in India was 28.8% as compared to the global industry growth of 4% to 6%,” says an analyst at KPMG. Similarly, for 2006-07, the country’s aviation industry grew at around 25% as compared to the global growth of 5%. But analysts also point out that current air congestion over Indian skies could have been avoided if the early warning signs of this boom were noted at the beginning of 2003. The navigational services and systems at most Indian airports are outdated by over decades when compared to other airports worldwide

On Friday, Pakistan redeployed thousands of troops to its border with India, making war imminent between the nuclear-armed rivals following last month’s terrorist attacks on Mumbai, India’s cultural and financial capital.

The Pakistani move comes in response to last week’s incursion into Pakistan’s airspace by two team’s of Indian Air Force (IAF) jet fighters in an attempt to test Pakistan’s air defences, response time and in order to expose the location of radar stations along the border. In turn, the Pakistani Air Force (PAF) has increased its own vigilance by scrambling fighter jets over several Pakistani cities in order to defend against an Indian air attack.

change base to Pune now!
After clearing initial technical issues, Pune is finally set to get its own international airport. Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the state cabinet has given nod to the international airport near Chakan and agreed for releasing initial amount of Rs 200 crore.

The government's decision taken during Wednesday's late night cabinet meet is expected to expedite the work process for airport. The airport is expected to come up on around 2500 hectres of land at Shiroli-Chandus village near Chakan, some 45-kilometers away from Pune along the Pune-Masik national highway.

"After this latest decision by cabinet, the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC), will be able to acquire land and start other work for the airport", said Pune district collector Chandrakant Dalvi. The state government constituted MADC in 2002 as a Special Purpose Company. Allocation of fund will help MADCto start land acquisition.

Story had many twists with ample scope for Vasant Rokade to show his histrionics. After a long time Vasant Da is doing character role and it suits him like a glove. Way he seduces aspirant migrant?s women(Mrs. Dhurandhare) just by a look is worth watching. Munniben (Kalpana Bhange) as an organizer for this mission is impressive and her mannerism and body languages are top notch. Not much dialogue here though for her. Dr.Ramesh Lallu here plays Mr. Sam path Ape, son of one of such ladies (MRS.APTE) who raised a fight with this organized crime is a revelations. Murder of Ramesh Lallu in a fake encounter by PSI Jadhav is a masterpiece and takes movie to new heights. Motor Chase filmed at Sinhgarh road with high riser on background are very well shot particularly with aerial view. Vamp Vidya(nagin from nehre) and a pervert qouta compusive lier- a male BPD victim plays role of overseas agents who provides support for this scam. Vamp Vidya acts her role with precision and wickedness with which she abuses these ladies is chilling. Her voice with nasal twangs fits well her character. Steamy Scenes between Vamp Vidya and Lalit Kshirsagar in Airport Lounge when Lalit Hijacks a SKYLINER could be an eyesore to Indian Censors. Vasant has intelligently used conveyer belts at airport arrival halls for dance numbers by Ramesh Lallu Bhange and Lalit Kshirsagar. Miss Stephens plays role of UK social security agents who rescue such ladies and Indian Ambassador played by Kumar Gauarav. It is good to see him after a long hiatus!
