Garuda Indonesia Flight Forced to Land

A PT Garuda Indonesia jetliner carrying 49 passengers made an emergency landing on Friday at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport after one of its wheels came loose, officials said. No passengers were hurt in the incident.

Pujobroto, Garuda’s corporate secretary, said a Boeing 737 was forced to return to the airport 15 minutes after it took off for Aceh after a problem occurred with one of the left wheels.

“The captain flying the plane, Johnny Siregar, said the wheel was loose,” he said,“and according to the procedure he had to return to base.”

The plane then circled the airport for about an hour to burn fuel before landing safely.

Flight GA-142 took off at 8:14 a.m., Pujobroto said.

“All passengers were transferred to the next flight at 11 a.m.,” he added.

Bambang Ervan, a spokesman for the Transportation Ministry, said an inspector from the ministry was sent to the site to make the appropriate safety checks on the aircraft.

“The plane is grounded until maintenance and repairs are finished,” Bambang said.

JA Barata, from the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT), said he had sent two investigators to probe the incident.

“We will check whether or not it was caused by a mechanical problem,” he said.

Edward Silloy, the airport’s chief administrator, said that the aircraft had been removed to a secure location for maintenance.

He said the airport was closed for a few minutes while Flight GA-142 landed.

“The runway was closed and we had to divert other flights,” he said, adding that the airport reopened at 10 a.m. on Friday.

The EU lifted a travel ban on flagship carrier Garuda Indonesia, Mandala Airlines, Airfast and PrimeAir in July.

The move was in response to what the European Commission, the EU’s regulatory arm, deemed “significant improvements” by the nation’s civil aviation authority.

Yang GOBLOK itu dari sini..

SILA BACA YANG INI..

Ada 2 PEKARA YANG LUCU DIUTARAKAN OLEH JUSOF KALLA :

1. KENAPA INDONESIA LEBIH BODOH DARI VIETNAM< MALAYSIA DAN SINGAPURA?

2. BUDAYA "KESIAN PAK SAYA NGAK LULUS"

Kualitas Pendidikan Indonesia Urutan Ke-160 Dunia
Posted by: muhliz08 on: April 24, 2009

In: Kualitas Pendidikan Indonesia| Urutan Kualitas Pendidikan Dunia| ujian nasionalComment!

Top mechanical engineering prize to Malaysian studentMs Aiza Zaidin
UQ international student Aiza Zaidin has been awarded the University's most prestigious prize in mechanical engineering.

Ms Zaidin, from Malaysia, is the second woman to win the KBR Prize, which has been presented annually since 1983 to the student who completes the best thesis project in mechanical engineering as nominated by the Head of the School of Engineering.

The $5000 prize and certificate were presented to Ms Zaidin by Mr Anthony Goodwin from engineering firm Halliburton KBR at a ceremony held at UQ's St Leo's College.

Mr Goodwin said the KBR Prize emphasised analysis and clear communication of complex engineering projects.

"Ms Zaidin's thesis was methodical and her level of communication was of a very high, professional standard," Mr Goodwin said.

In receiving the award, Ms Zaidin thanked her thesis supervisor Professor Ross McAree, mechanical engineering staff and her student colleagues.

Ms Zaidin studied Australian Year 12 at Taylor's College in Malaysia before enrolling at UQ.

She graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) with first-class Honours.

Malaysian students top world finals of Imagine Cup 2009 in Cairo

Solutions could help more than 30 million children worldwide, says Microsoft Malaysia
By AvantiKumar
27 Jul 2009

KUALA LUMPUR, 27 JULY 2009 – Two Malaysian teams from University Sains Malaysia (USM) have taken the top and third spot for a design development award at Microsoft’s worldwide Imagine Cup challenge 2009 finals, held in Cairo.

The winning teams—Team Cosmic and Team Capricorn—garnered the first and third prize for the Unlimited Potential (UP) Design for Development Award, according to Microsoft Malaysia managing director, Yasmin Mahmood.

“The Award, one of the seven Achievement Awards in addition to the main categories of the Imagine Cup 2009 worldwide finals in Cairo, Egypt, challenges students to create software solutions that can be accessed from a basic mobile phone and designed to meet the needs of end-users who earn less than US$8 a day,” said Mahmood.

Imagine Cup 2009 Worldwide allows students around the world to use innovation and technology to form solutions that tackle real-world issues facing society. A total of 444 students from 149 teams representing 70 countries and regions competed in the Imagine Cup 2009 Worldwide Finals in nine categories.

Winning Malaysian teams

“Team Cosmic impressed the judges with their winning solution,‘Virtual Health Connect.’,” she said.“The solution aims to help parents keep track of their children’s immunisation schedules automatically by sending SMS reminders to parents ahead of a scheduled vaccination; a solution that targets to reduce mortality rate for children under five by increasing global immunisation coverage.”

Mahmood said ‘Team Cosmic’ of USM, comprising Jasy Liew Suet Yan, Ooi Keng Siang, Matthew Phiong Yoon Kheong and Loo Wan Koe, took home the first prize of US$10,000 (RM36,000), beating 149 teams from 70 countries for the prestigious award.

Third prize winner, Team Capricorn, walked away with a US$1,000 prize for its ‘GreenEve2Peace’ invention, she said.“The system is a collaboration with Muda Agricultural Development Authority (MADA) to help the farming community make more accurate decisions by providing them with correct and up-to-date broadcast weather information and recommended timetable for farming activities through an SMS system, a tool which is cost-friendly and easily accessible to farmers.”

“With the use of this invention, MADA can easily broadcast farming activities and urgent announcements to farmers and help make farming processes faster and more efficient,” she added.

More than 30 million children could be helped

For the past seven years, we have invested a lot time and effort together with our partners in the higher education ecosystem to create awareness and promote Imagine Cup as a platform for students to realise their potential and experience the opportunities made possible through the power of technology,” said Mahmood.“Our efforts have culminated in the two prestigious awards our USM students have won in the global arena, truly exhibiting the potential of Malaysian students to create world-class solutions when given the opportunity and support.

She said that Team Cosmic’s Virtual Health Connect could potentially help more than 30 million children globally that are unimmunised and potentially face death because of the inaccessibility to a routine and regular immunisation schedule, citing statistics from UNICEF.

“Imagine Cup provides an excellent platform for students around the world to explore new ways to use the power of software to address some of the world’s toughest challenges,” said Mahmood.“I am very proud of our students. They have demonstrated their ability to be knowledgeable and effective global citizens, having reconciled their deep understanding of real-world issues and applying their creativity to solve them.”

Malaysian student wins International Student of the Year 2008
24 / 04 / 2008

University of Manchester student Stephenie Siew Jean Tiew’s inspirational story of student life in the UK has earned her the title of International Student of the Year 2008, and a £2000 prize.

Stephenie, from Malaysia, has been studying medicine for three years. She won the overall title at a ceremony held in London, hosted by BBC Radio 1 DJ Nihal, with special guests Moira Stewart and Jimmy Choo. She was one of more than 1,500 students, representing 127 nationalities, to enter the British Council competition, which is designed to shine the spotlight on international students and their unique contributions to life in the UK.

To enter, each student was asked to write a personal ‘letter home’ in English, detailing the out-of-class achievements that help make their time in the UK so rewarding.

Stephenie showed her passion for working with children by establishing the ‘Save a Baby’s Life Society’ with some of her fellow students. The group go into local communities to teach basic life support skills to parents and carers of babies. In addition to running the workshops, Stephenie fundraises for the society.

In her busy schedule she also finds time to mentor local teenagers, who are interested in a career in healthcare, and writes for the medical school newsletter –‘Mediscope’– whilst also representing the university in debating tournaments. In her entry letter, Stephenie said:'Since coming to the UK, I feel the sky is the limit and I have dared to dream. This is a place full of opportunities and endless possibilities.

'The supportive culture in campus, be it from faculty staff or peers, has knitted an extraordinary student life for me. I am a simple country girl that has blossomed into a confident and capable woman.'

After winning the award, she added:‘I am thrilled and delighted to have been chosen as an ambassador for both my university and my country.’

Since coming to the UK in 2005 Stephenie has also won the prestigious Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health Student Prize and has been invited to present one of her papers at an international conference.

The International Student Award is different from other student competitions. By focusing on the virtues of living and studying in the UK, and not solely on academic achievements, it aims to celebrate diversity and creativity within UK institutions.

From school pupils to postgraduates, international students at all levels entered the competition. And as well as earning wider recognition for their accomplishments, their ‘from the heart’ accounts of living away from their homes and families also give the British Council and academic institutions valuable insights into visitors’ perceptions of the UK.

Martin Davidson, Chief Executive of the British Council, said:‘The British Council knows that international students make a huge contribution and commitment to life in the UK. This competition provides a fantastic opportunity for them to earn some well-deserved public recognition for their achievements – a great chance for them to show the world what they’ve achieved while living and learning in the UK.’
