In general home security systems are recommended by most security experts. ADT and the likes are overall great companies that sell a good product. Alarm Systems do deter criminals but they do not prevent criminals from getting into your home. Alarms will let you know that your home has been broken into! Facts: If you can PREVENT (make it very difficult to get in) a criminal from getting in for 2 minutes they will give up and look for easier targets. The idea is to PREVENT the burglary. Weakest link in your home security - the front or back door! Yes your deadbolt is useless unless you reinforce the strike plate or door frame. The door frame is 1 inch of trim wood that holds your door closed. 80% of burglaries come through an outside door according to the FBI. One kick and they are in your home. Consumer Reports said several years ago the door frame is more important than the deadbolt. Beef up the door frame. I bought StrikeMaster II as it's a really easy install and a friend had it. There are other products out there too - do some research! Go to www.asafehome.net if you are interested. 3 ways I secured my home: StrikeMaster II for the door frames with good deadbolts, window film for the downstairs windows so they are very difficult to break and an alarm system just in case. Didn't cost all that much. And for all those how think "I have a gun!". Well a gun is nice but doesn't do you any good when the #1 break-in time is 2pm - when you are at work. If you've been broken into once you have 50% greater chance of being broken into again in 6 months. I know because I was broken into 3 time - every 6 months like clock work. After the first time - alarm system installed (still got in), after the second time gun (I was at work) and third time window film and StrikeMaster II. They kicked the door but didn't get in. Gave up and went down the street to a neighbors house. To bad for them. But that's piece of mind for my family!

I have been doing ADT sales for two years now and we do not break into peoples houses. We do however either get online or go down to the local police station and get a list of all the recent crimes that have occured in the area, including addresses of the peoples homes. I guess you never thought that when you called the police to report a breakin it was public information. And you never thought that us alarm salesman may see you as a potential customer since you were just broken into, making you feel a need. The fact that you don't get an alarm for your house despite all of the breakins makes you careless, I just hope you live alone. Poor family daddy doesnt want to pay a $1 a day to take care of his scared helpless family. NoC wrote: This just happened to me. Attempted break-in 5 nights ago. That ADT three-year contract is unethical and needs to be exposed as such. I signed a contract with a local installer in Tucson, AZ. The house I bought already had ADT equipment, though it was sitting dormant. The previous owner was not using it. I told the local ADT contractor that I'd only be in the house for two years. He assured me that I could cancel before the end of the contract with no penalty by just explaining that I'd be moving out of the country (I knew then that I'd be moving to Mexico at this time). I am now moving and ADT will NOT release me from the contract even though they offer no service in Mexico. The people buying my house do want to continue service, and guess what? ADT is making them sign a three-year contract too instead of just finishing out mine! What a rip-off! Most people move in less than three years and ADT knows this, which is why I believe they use three year contracts. I feel guilty seeing the people buying my house get stuck with an ADT contract, but they want the security and it appears to be the only way I can get out of my contract. The equipment in the house is ADT equipment. Rest assured ADT. I'm going out of my way to let as many people know that you operate with under-handed tactics to force people to pay for three years when they don't need the service for that long, even though the equipment is long paid for. Justly Paranoid, ADT cannot be responsible for getting the companies who knock on your door to stop, just as Pepsi can't control how Safeway or Wal-Mart sells their product to you. If you live in Houston, the people knocking are most likely from Ranger American, which is a very reputable dealer. The reason you don't see a car is that it's easier to walk from door to door than drive 30 feet, get out, knock, drive another 30 feet, and repeat. The car is around the corner or a couple of blocks away. If ADT was a "scam", why do 7 million American households and 25 million people worldwide use the service? ADT has been in business since 1874 and monitors 80% of the Fortune 500 companies for a reason. Most dealers do use the "trick" Andre wrote about with the yard sign. If the salesperson does not create urgency or have a good story, people don't buy. Without the $99 system in exchange for putting up a yard sign story, people don't understand how we can sell the system for such a low price (ADT pays us well for the contract, so we can afford to give a basic system away for $99). It is true, though, yard signs do help advertise in the sense that people like to keep up with their neighbors, and when the neighbors are happy with their new system, we'll usually get 2 or 3 new installs in the same neighborhood within the week. The catches are: you have to have reasonable credit (575 or higher), you must be a homeowner, you must agree to a 3 year monitoring agreement (how else would ADT make money by letting us give the systems away?).

I don't sell security systems but I do own a custom window covering business and at times we do sell door to door in new home neighborhoods. It is an effective way to meet potential customers and increase our sales when the phones aren't ringing. Most homeowners are polite whether they are interested in my services or not. It's sad that door to door salespeople get a bad wrap, usually they are self motivated, hard working individuals who are just trying to make an honest living. And for you people who don't think it's a real job...knocking doors has allowed me to earn a six figure salary for the last 8 years while working less than 40 hours a week. A friend of mine who sells pest control..door to door.... made $260,000 last year so eat your heart out!!

Yea, all these people are funny. Knocking on doors isnt a "real" job I guess. They would probably quit after a few days. Couldn't take the rejection and wouldnt be motivated for the BIG money. I door knock because the money is great! I love it when people say it's not a "real" job, because I have probably done a lot harder physical work than any of them. If someones got a license around their neck and is knocking with an ADT shirt, they are probably a dealer. Yes you can find out where break-ins have occured on the internet or police department. To the guy who said a 3 year contract isn't right. You are wrong. A 3 year contract is right!!! If you are getting a $1200 value at no cost, how do you expect them to pay for it. MOST PEOPLE DONT MOVE BEFORE THREE YEARS! The average family moves every 3-5 years! So the contract is perfect, and what the hell is wrong with the monitoring rate of 39.99? You dont even pay that much after your discount for homeowners insurance. You pay between 20-30 bucks. If you want to be monitored for $8.95 go ahead and do it. Those type of companies dont last, they cant cover costs and pay their people correctly so they fail. Wouldnt you also question their quality? LOL, Yea if I am in the right mood I will knock on a no-soliciting sign. We arent selling anything! We are offering people an opportunity to protect themselves and their loved ones at a very low cost! Sry about what happened to you S SteinBach, but that was partly your fault and the salesman fault. If you sign an agreement your locked in. The salesman may have been told that was the case and wasnt informed properly. A lot of you will pass up on the opportunity that we are giving you just because you have been trained to tell us no. You know its a good deal and a logical one but you try and justify to not take our deal. Stop with your petty excuses those of you who actually care about you and your loved ones. By the way, I work for American Alarm and we are a Monitronics dealer.
