If Americans are to succeed in an increasingly competitive global economy, students in poor and middle class families must have ready access to a college education.

More egalitarian Liberal babble from the editorial page of The Berkshire Eagle.
Of course there is no mention of the role that teachers unions have in forcing-up the budgets of all these colleges and universities.
Also not mentioned are the outrageous salaries and perks given college administrators.
It's high time these state-supported schools were required to get spending under control.
Before The Eagle goes recommending that yet more public monies be wasted on state colleges and universities, perhaps The Eagle should publish the actual salaries, cushy benefits, and pension plans given to teachers, professors, and administrators within those various Massachusetts taxpayer-supported colleges and universities.
Include, of course, the number of months vacation time that comes with these 'jobs'.
It would be an eye-opener for anyone who thinks for a moment that any of these people on the public payroll are underpaid.

Teachers should be paid well. They have a crucial job educating the youth. Remember that these kids will be leading our country some day. Would you rather have an educated president or uneducated one?
I personally hope that Obama is successful in his plan to make college affordable for EVERYONE!

However administrators, and other political reward positions like a former congressman from Lowell just go have to be stopped. The economy is down, so raises and wages should reflect that. There is plenty of extras that can be cut back, like high salaries for football and basketball coaches.

You clearly do not work in the educational field, and from the sounds of your comment you don't have any children either.

We have some of the best colleges in the country here in Massachusetts because we believe in the value of education. To attract the best you have to be a competitive employer.

If you want to pay marginal wages you will get marginal teachers. Have you talked to people in certain other states? My husband is originally from the Carolina's and it is just staggering how ignorant many of the people there are.

If I wanted to live in that type of state I would move.

Thanks but NO THANKS!!

I'll gladly pay so that people educated here will know at least the general location of all 50 states.

Example: Two girls, early 20's, in S.C. asked us where we were from. We told them Massachusetts. They looked puzzled and asked, "Is that in the MIDWEST somewhere?"

Are you serious??!! That's way off...There are a few other M-states in that area, but you would think they would have at least heard of Plymouth, The 13 Original Colonies, etc.

They didn't seem to know what I was talking about when I mentioned the Mayflower, Pilgrims, and other basic common knowledge.

They just chewed their gum and smiled nice. Nice girls, but frighteningly uneducated.

Go there and live if you want to see what it's like to pay teachers little to nothing.

You get what you pay for.

My dad is from Georgia, and in the cities, or more specifically in the suburbs of the cities there are some good schools. Someday I will move for the weather, but not until my children are grown and on their own.

This state is cold, it doesn't have the same climatological attraction to keep people here. We need to at least have some reasons to stay.

I like living around people who have at least basic knowledge. It makes life so much better.
