We need to hold our elected officials (both Republican and Democrats) responsible for not fixing this unemployment mess. I understand that we foolishly based our economy of American citizens spending instead of us producing products for the world. That model is no longer working and needs to be changed. We changed to that model, we certainly change from it. With us nearing officially 10% unemployment, also include in the underemployed, banks not wanting to give loans and cutting credit card limits, and a another complete mess in the housing market - how exactly are Americans going to spend ourselves out of this mess?

Like it or not, it is time to start up the NRA (no, not that one, The National Recovery Administration) and start putting people back to work. People digging ditches and other people filling them back in is better then 10% of Americans sitting at home.

As for those who own companies and are dependent on Americans to keep your company profitable by buying your products, how is every company cutting labor costs working out for you? All you all are doing is eliminating money from your employees that they would be spending at other companies. Other companies are doing the same to you. Slowing you are putting each other out of business. This business model has a major flaw in it

It doesn’t matter who started this mess, who is charge of it or who wants to blame somebody else for it. Start acting like adults and fix it.

Remember Amerika this is what you voted for the lame liberal democrats that control the city, the county, the state, and now the country. Hope & Change that will destroy the nation only to reemerge as a socialist police state. We are Doomed!

Can't fight statistics but.....if 14.7M people are out of work and they make up 9.5% of the workforce, this means 140.03M people are going to work each day. It also means of the over 304M people we have in the US only roughly one out of two works for a living. So if you really want to get headlines you could point out that over 50% of the amercian population is out of work. How's that for fearmongering?

I understand, but wanting ANY politician to fix it is the wrong answer.

Even after all the trouble they created, if they would have simply let the banks fail, we'd be pulling out of the problems by now.

Politicians ARE the problem.

Stop looking to a strongman to save you. They'll sell you down the river every time (and ask you to praise them for it).

Save yourself. All else is a scam.

Yes, but the trillion dollar question - who and how will we pay for such a recovery? If $787,000,000,000 was not enough to even make a dent, how much WOULD it take? And are we just going to shoulder it onto the next generation? If so, I'll let my kids know when they come that they should save as early as possible to retire in another country - they certainly won't be able to here!

The works projects were supported by both parties and I do believe they work to a certain degree. But without responsibile funding for such programs, it's only robbing Peter to pay Paul.

The present socialist administration has adopted an anti-business attitude and a save-the-world while abandoning the US attitude and have been talking nice and preaching hope and change while everything slide downhill.

Expect further decline.

If Americans could make a dime everytime they pointed an accusing finger at a politician and we taxed that income at 1%, we whouldn't have a deficeit by the end of 2010. Don't pretend to have solutions for thing you don't fully understand.

Get enough people to be dependent on the goverment, they will vote for who ever promises them the most.
That's the democrat's game plan, and the main reason that democracies are always temporary by nature.
Pretty soon this country will be divided between people that work vs.
the poor and unions. It'll be interesting how the battle lines will be drawn, and what the end result will be.
barry was right, WE WON, it's a shame that the USA lost.

An elevated unemployment rate could become a political liability for President Barack Obama when congressional elections are held next year.

I don't think so. Americans were stupid enough to believe it was all Bush's fault and will continue to do so.

Obama's Administration promised unemployment would not go over 8.0% if we passed the situmulus.

What did we get for our Trillion dollars? Unemployment up to 9.5% and rising.

Socialism does not work- and no, Obama hasn't nationalized the whole economy yet, try as he might. So the economy will eventually get a sluggish, "jobless" recovery.

But we will not see low 5% unemployment again under Obama like we saw in Clinton-Bush years. Just wait until Obama is done nationalizing health care. Get used to scarce jobs at least through 2012. That is the change you voted for.

Obama stressed fiscal responsibility in almost every "debate" during the presidential campaign. He was going to "reign in government spending" and "go through the budget line by line". Once elected he shoves through grossly overweight spending packages that neither him nor the voting majority in congress actually read. McCain doing nothing (economy related) would be much better for America overall. This uncertainty about, "what is he going to do next" or "how much is he going to spend" would not exist. Also, these policies have really agitated the largest holders of USD assets. They are all screaming for the IMF to set up a basket currency for global trade. I don't know if this will ever happen, but he is killing the dollar's credibility with every bill he signs.

Right, you only think Bush is retired in Texas! In reality he is hiding under a desk in the White House. Bush spends his days calling businesspeople demanding that they make Obama "fail" by laying people off. Millions have lost their jobs under Obama already. Yup, it sure is Bush's fault every time a company CEO looks at the Obama future and says "uh oh" and issues a couple hundred pink slips.

Problem is there is no manufacturing left in the country. China and other cheap labor countries have destroyed us. Manufacturing has always been the back bone of this country, and now we don’t produce squat.
Our politicians, have done NOTHING to combat the unfair advantage these countries have over the US work force. Both sides are to blame, and neither are doing anything to improve the situation. Things are going to get MUCH worse until our country wakes up and stops the overwhelming trade deficit we have.

100% Correct. If you are an EU citizen please tell these people what happens when government continues trying to control/fix/manage everyday life. I believe it is now legal to sell misshaped fruit again as of this week. Tell them of all the taxes this mentality creates. It is good to see Merkel, et. al. promoting fiscally responsible programs. Europeans (in some countries) are starting to elect politicians to reverse this trend of ever-growing government, while Americans are just beginning to follow this model that is not working. Coming from a European they may actually believe that everything Europeans do is not "progressive".
