Pvc exterior trim boards

Has anyone used exterior trim boards made of pvc? If so what are the pros and cons of the product? I'm currently looking at Versatex Trimboard as an option. We build around Chicago and have all of the seasons to go thur.

PVC trimboards are a great option to wood or manufactured wood products. Unlike wood products or manufactured wood trimboards, PVC trimboards are totally impervious to moisture damage. The product you are looking at, Versatex, is manufactured to have the consistency of a pine board. Versatex cuts, nails, routs just like a pine trimboard and it will not rot. Although paint is not required, the product will most likely look better over time if it has some paint on it. PVC trims are the wave of the future. Pros won't rot, does not need to be painted, looks and feels like real wood, pvc is a proven product. When installing, pay attention to installation guidelines, although the products has many of the qualities of wood, it is PVC, and needs to be installed correctly.

Tuf board is a new brand you will see in lumber companies in the very near future for a much more reasonable price ask your lumber supplier

PVC eventually becomes brittle from exposure to the sun.

This is not a true statement pvc board by itself does not become brittle The character of PVC when glued will change and become more brittle due to the lack of it being able to bend as a flat board will bend so when glued up will shatter as will afiberglass columns PVC is the board of the future

i would recomend a polystyrene trim like "styrotrim" they have great products and are very easy to install

I replaced my front door pillasters with AZEK brand PVC a couple of years ago. I painted them with latex paint and they still look as good as the day I installed them (I'm in New England). The warning that AZEK gives concerns paint color (Must have an LRV of 55 or greater).
AZEK is easy to cut and rout (I also made some routed pieces to replace exterior window sill nose trim).
I'm now in the process of replacing some exterior cormer trim boards with AZEK.

Azek sure looks great and u claim its easy 2 install, but in reality pvc (is not) a very long lasting material. outdoor weather is unpredictable and this material has a tendincy to warp in hot weather, and may chip paint in colder harsher elements. have a look at styrotrim.com the site will explain its self

The Last comment is SO WRONG PVC will out last any product for exterior trim on the market and the ability to fabricate custom work from PVC shhets rather than standard board size is HUGE
Any one out there that is thinking of using PVC trim on there home should consider and follow these few step
1 Glue every piece if you have a 2 step trim glue 1 to the other this will stabilize the martial more.
2 if using Moldings crown , bed, glue and solid Back 16" on center
3 Throw away your nail gun and get a screw gun proper fastening eliminates expansion.
Last our company has manufactured large cornice details 2' x2' with over 72" of material per ft. Manufactured temp 70 degrees
then frozen 8 below 2 days then heated to 100degress the movement with the fabricated piece was 1/2 the movement of regular flat stock and this was not even fastened to the wall. I live in Georgia and have fascia that needs replacing due to a faulty rain gutter. I'm having a problem finding tuf board sized 1x6x8 and I'm concerned, after reading installation comments, if the Gutter Guard person doesn't install it properly. Any comments would be appreciated. Jackie Reid

By far Azek is about the best choice that one may consider for exterior trim applications in lieu of using wood. Azek requires special adhesives to bond joints, and machines very easily although one wants to make sure they have a good respirator when cutting or shaping this stuff as the cutters emit small snow like particles that get electronically charged and stick to anything. Azek is available in panels and random thicknesses and widths with boards being offered in 12' and 18' lengths only; so doing a good takeoff will ensure cost savings when ordering this stuff. Azek does not require a primer but I use an Acrylic one to cover over the nail holes and bevel ripped seams I use the special bonding glue and fill any cracks with auto body filler and sand smooth with a 100 grit sandpaper. A quality outdoor acrylic house paint from a manufacture like Duron or Ben Moore will ensure that this finish shall last many years before any touch up is necessary. While water penetration is a prime factor in the degradation of wood exterior trim, so too not to discount the effects that Ultra Violet rays have on anykind of material exposed in a Southern or Southwest Exposure. All butting end cuts I merely cut square and on the edges I use biscuits to keep alignment true and use the special bonding glue to create a good connection. I hope this helps

I really would like to use PVC on my exterior here in Chicago. The exterior is white stucco which only needs painting. The numorous vertical trim boards for the Tudor and the facia need replacing. The house trim color is BLACK however. I need PVC boards that comes in black or are paintable to black (LVR=0).
Any recommendations?

Hello, I am trying to replace the sill-nose on some of my wood windows and in the process I am looking at also replacing the 4" brick-mold around them. You mentioned gluing the Azak. What should I use to glue with? A regular PVC cement or is there something 'special' that I need to use?

You can use pvc cement or for a faster bond, A CA trim glue like Perma Mitre Adhesive

IMO you're tempting fate with black. That said, check out Sherwin Williams Vinyl Safe paint. Azek says darker colors (black =?) are OK to use with vinyl safe, since it's formulated to absorb less heat. It was designed for vinyl siding, hence the name.

I just installed a Kleer fascia and plan to paint it a med-dark brown with vinyl safe.

I'd be a bit concerned about black though, since the consequence of error would be a warped board I guess, just as bad as rot in my mind. The softening temp I think is around 140 deg. F. Caveat emptor.

Azek Product in the past 6 months have gone down hill there tolerance in boards and air pockets have increased dramaticlly consider trying tuf Board instead you will find that it has a harder outside surface and will not scratch as easy as AZEK There sheet tolerance is much better then there competitors tufboard.net
