I am looking for information about James Russell. He was a New orleans street artist who died in 1994. I am a big fan of his work and am also looking for copies of his Mardi Gras ladies.

He did one every year until his death - the last was a special commission by Harrah's Casino called Lady Luck which was completed right before he died in 1994. He had enormous talent but abused alcohol which eventually killed him

Many of his beautiful women have been reproduced in poster form and are dated and titled. These are easily recognized as late reproductions as they are dated long after Russell's death

Jimmy was in his early 50s at the time of his death and started drawing portraits in his early 20s. He was commissioned by the officers to do portraits when he was in the U.S. Army. I don't know much about his artwork prior to his move to New Orleans and his success with the Mardi Gras women series.

I have an 1987 original pen and ink signed by James Russell. He gave it to me in New Orleans the night he had finished running off about 2,000 copies of it. I was in Harry's bar sitting in the barber chair when He and some of his friends and his manager came in with it. I asked the guy who said he was the manager could I buy it and he told me it was the original that was used to make the prints. Mr. Russell came in a few minutes later and I was talking to him about the poster and I jokingly told him I had tried to buy it from his manager but that he wouldn't sell it to me, so I told him he could just
give it to me. At that point he called the guy over who had the poster and told him to give him a knife and a pencil. He made a slit in the cellophane and signed it to me, Best Wishes Always J. Russell. He also told me that the girl in the poster is a real person.

I would like to replace the russell that was destroyed by hurricane katrina at a renowed eatery/bar in biloxi. it was the figure with the cat. can't believe that is gone... but that how it is. how about a little help??
