Morgan Hill students spark national debate over U.S. flag clothes

Full story: Monterey County Herald

Five student-athletes exposed raw feelings about race and immigration in a Morgan Hill high school this week when they made the provocative choice to wear shirts and shorts bearing the stars and stripes of the American flag to school on Cinco de Mayo.

No American citizen, in America, should ever be asked, instructed, or directed to turn a shirt inside-out that has the American flag on it.
This is America. The Stars and Stripes is our flag....it is our flag all 365 days a year, without the exception of May 5th. No flag flies above the Stars and Stripes; the Stars and Stripes are not hidden from sight to appease anyone ever.
All of the men and women that fought numerous wars for our country did not die so the American flag can be hidden from sight when a crowd of high school students feels "disrespected".
Teach those students the meaning of the word "RESPECT"!
Thank your lucky stars

These Mexican kids should be grateful that, 1) the US has yet to close our borders to Mexico; 2) that their parents stole across the border illegally and either brought them here or had the gall to breed anchor kids after they got here. And the kids should be glad that we provided free medical care to their illegal mothers to have them. But for the combination of all of these circimstances, they would all be living in Mexico, where they would never have to feel disrespected by the sight of the American flag.

The freedoms I fought for was for and under the American Flag. We allow Cinco De Mayo to be celebrated here,so Mexicans can celebrate their heritage, which they do here more than even in their own country, but we don't turn into Mexico for the day, so quit shoving your traditions down our throats, enjoy you day, amongst yourselves, I don't have to acknowledge it if I don't want to.
I never heard an Irishman saying he was offended because someone was wearing American themed clothing on St. Patrick's Day. And by the way, My Stars and Stripes fly's high at my house 365/24/7 with the United States Marine Corps flag right below it, lit up and to remind everyone, "Don't Tread On Me" and if anyone ever tries to tell me to take it down, Stand By...I belong to the largest fraternity in the world..United States Veterans. Not all Mexican families that came to this country illegally abuse the system as you stated above.

"Diana Dariano, whose son Matthew wore a U.S. Constitution T-shirt, acknowledged that the friends wore the clothes to make a point... "'They heard that the Mexican kids were going to wear their colors so they wanted to wear the colors of the American flag,' she said."

"The Mexican kids?"

Perhaps the use of this term is part of the problem. These kids are American kids of Mexican heritage celebrating a part of their culture, just as American kids of Irish heritage celebrate a part of their culture on St. Patrick's Day.

When people see themselves as not belonging, especially teenagers, they will choose/find an identity with which they can identify. Referring to American kids as "Mexicans" reinforces for them that they don't belong/fit in with the majority group. Of course, this is not a new phenomenon, just as has become the practice of embracing a derogatory term by members of an "outcast" group in order to diminish its power.

The problem here is that the educators at the school missed the opportunity for a "teachable moment" by seeking to suppress one view out of an expedient concern, rather than engage the students on both sides in order to address the issue. My hope is that they will attempt to do so in the near future in order to help both the children and parents on both "sides" to understand, appreciate, and respect each others views and differences.

This vice principal needs to review the constitution. When the mexican national children complained they should have been told this is America you should be thankful that you are allowed to display the mexican flag and celebrate this bogus holiday. I just read an article that at last year's celebration the mexican nationals were allowed to carry the mexican flag throughout the school and that this evil vice principal was the leader of the pack. It is time for this guy to be terminated.

Yes, you are absloutely right. It is doubdtful that "Cinco DeMaya" is included in the state's curriculum that has to be followed by sll the school systems in the state.
American history and culture are what is required to be taught not the observance of a foreign "holiday" (it is not an official holiday in Mexico! Only in the bars here in the U.S.) no matter how many students of "Mexican heritage" attend that school>

More than a century ago, the Irish were routinely ridiculed, charicatured, and discriminated against as sub-human in the Northeast and other parts of the country. "No Irish Need Apply" signs were prevalent when hiring signs were displayed. Anti-immigration feelings were similarly elevated at the time, and there was a lot of "Nativism" sentiment. Undoubtedly there were "flag-wavers" on both sides, over which much righteous indignation was generated.

We don't "allow" Cinco de Mayo to be celebrated here; the First Amendment "guarantees" the freedom of speech and expression, regardless of who is speaking, and no one in the government gets to ask for proof of citizenship when people peacably assemble for any reason.

What you seem to be lacking are relevant facts. Three hundred thousand Irish don't equate to 60 million latinos in about the same amount of time.

Not to mention thee Irish weren't coming here claiming they were reconquesting the United States of America for Ireland.

The fact you can't see very important relevant distinctions makes me think you're either stupid or on the other side and your lame argument is purposeful in its idiocy.

Here is an update;

Yesterday, five Live Oak High School students were sent home for wearing clothes with the American flag on it, while hundreds who wore Mexican flag apparel, colors and face paintings were allowed to remain in school.
I can't believe I'm actually writing this, but...

Today, a group of students who are "Mexican-American" walked out in protest of the five students who they say "offended them" by wearing the American Flag clothes yesterday on Cinco de Mayo. They held a small rally at the Morgan Hill Civic Center and demanded to see the Mayor.
Absolutely mind boggling. These students show that they owe more loyalty to a corrupt country south of our border who has done nothing for them, than they do for a country that has provided them opportunity and education. Their families left Mexico because the country did not offer them any opportunity, yet they find it offensive that students in this country would dare wear an American Flag shirt or have any pride in the United States of America.
All of this stems from the parents and the community they self-segregate themselves in. This community teaches them to think "Mexico First". The Constitution of the United States does not exist in their eyes, only their wants, needs and demands based on their race and ethnicity - and damn all the other people who live in this country!
KSBW

Students showing their Mexican-American pride walked out of class at Live Oak High School on Thursday, and rallied at the Morgan Hill Civic Center, calling the actions of the students who wore the American T-shirts on Cinco de Mayo offensive. They also demanded to speak with the mayor.
"I think they should apologize because it is a Mexican heritage day," Annicia Nunez, a Live Oak High student, told NBC BayArea. "We don't deserve to be disrespected like that. We wouldn't do that on Fourth of July."
The ignorance of the students above, Annicia Nunez, is quite apparent as school is not in session the the Fourth of July as it is a national holiday in this country. A holiday which celebrates the fight for the independence of a country that now exists, that they live in, and enjoy the benefits thereof.

Cinco de Mayo is not an American holiday and should not be celebrated in any public schools that is funded by taxpayer dollars.

Oh! Ignoring the uncited numbers, I missed the part where it was the NUMBER of people involved that determined whether or not AMERICAN CITIZENS could enjoy the liberties of recognizing a significant event in their heritage. So basically, Irish immigrant descendents get their heritage recognition grandfathered in because there weren't that many of them (and they blend in well as White folks), while Latinos... not so much, even though their ancestors occupied the Mexican Territory decades before Irish immigrants arrived in America.

Does that apply to St. Patrick's Day, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, individual birthdays, and other regional events? I thought that local control of schools was a Conservative value. By the way, it's not a holiday if students have to attend school on that day. Schools are closed on American holidays.

Daily Horoscope for May 18

Gemini

Try as you might, you won't be able to convince a certain person to see things from your point of view. This character is far too busy letting you know that they're an individual in their own right and they won't be tied down by you. The more you push, the more they'll rebel, so try not to incite further displays of outrageousness.
