'Living flag' was recreated in 1967

Full story: Daily Herald

I'm writing concerning an article that was in your paper on June 14 titled "Great Lakes sailors make 'living' flag for Flag Day." The article stated that 7,400 sailors formed a "living" U.S. flag at Great Lakes Naval Station and that they were trying to recreate a living flag that was done in 1917.

I was one of the 10,000 sailors from Great Lakes that created a living flag at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 8, 1967. I was in the graduating Boot Camp battalion (Company 192) that marched around the field and then became the "flag pole" for the flag. It was billed as the "Mid-America salute to the flag" As a side note, this was the 1st Boot Camp graduation to take place away from Great Lakes.

I also have an 8 x 10 photo of this flag!

I was there to see the flag with the Milwaukee USO. I would love to have a picture of that flag. Any way I could get one too. I would sure appreciate it.
Thanks

Larry McClure I was a member of the Drill Team from Great Lakes that performed that day. We marched around the field and did a drill performance in front of the grandstand.

I was in company 274 and was also in the living flag ceremonies. Would be nice if one could find out how many people are still living that participated in the recreation of the living flag.

I've been thinking the same thing. I am looking into creating myself a new email ID and setting up a facebook page based on the "living flag" of 1967.
I wonder if we could entice some major news outlet to run a story on the flag? We could do a write-in campaign to co-incide with the July 8th date.

What do you think?

I was in Company 200 and was one of the stars. I also had the color picture but it got lost in one of the moves in my 20 year career. For some reason, I thought it happened for the 4th of July - glad you clarified that.

John, I only have a photo of the flag, nothing from the ceremonies performed that day. If you would like a copy of the 8x10 email me at arothejr@etcmail.com and I will send it to you.

Al, I also graduated that same day...my overhead photo was destroyed in a fire at my Mom's home 2 years later. If you get this and would be so kind as to email me a JPEG of your 8x10, I would be super grateful. usshaven@aol.com

Thanks so much

I was in the flag. I was in Naval Electronics School in North Chicago. We were the only sailors in the flag that were not in boot camp at the time. I don't have a picture, but it was printed in the Chicago newspapers. Maybe they have a picture in their files.

Daily Horoscope for May 22

Gemini

Beware wishful thinking because it will cloud your thoughts and lead to confusion. However, that's much easier said than done, because today you're showing distinct tendencies towards living in a rosy world of your own and ignoring any hard facts that are under your nose. Take care that you don't allow someone to dupe you simply because you aren't paying attention to what they're saying or doing.
