I was one of the 10,000 sailors from Great Lakes that created a living flag at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 8, 1967. I was in the graduating Boot Camp battalion (Company 192) that marched around the field and then became the "flag pole" for the flag. It was billed as the "Mid-America salute to the flag" As a side note, this was the 1st Boot Camp graduation to take place away from Great Lakes.
I also have an 8 x 10 photo of this flag!

Al, I was in that flag also, I was in the red stripe, Company 238. I would like to get a copy of your picture. The one I had was lost in a fire. Larry McClure I was a member of the Drill Team from Great Lakes that performed that day. We marched around the field and did a drill performance in front of the grandstand.

I was in company 274 and was also in the living flag ceremonies. Would be nice if one could find out how many people are still living that participated in the recreation of the living flag.

I've been thinking the same thing. I am looking into creating myself a new email ID and setting up a facebook page based on the "living flag" of 1967. I wonder if we could entice some major news outlet to run a story on the flag? We could do a write-in campaign to co-incide with the July 8th date.
What do you think?

I was in Company 200 and was one of the stars. I also had the color picture but it got lost in one of the moves in my 20 year career. For some reason, I thought it happened for the 4th of July - glad you clarified that.

I was in the flag. I was in Naval Electronics School in North Chicago. We were the only sailors in the flag that were not in boot camp at the time. I don't have a picture, but it was printed in the Chicago newspapers. Maybe they have a picture in their files.
