Minnesota teens will have to start observing new-driver laws starting Aug. 1. The laws are designed to reduce teens' exposure to high-risk activities like driving at night and driving with multiple passengers.

I see no reference to attentiveness due to Cell Phone use. This seems to be as big of a problem for Teens and Adults. Get out of the left lane. It is a passing lane. Slower vechiles move to the RIGHT. I'm in a hurry!!!!

How bout this - apply it to all drivers young and old and take away the age of passenger criteria. I have seen some real deadly moves by immigrants who are learning a new language while they are learning to to drive.

A step in the right direction, but how about raising the age limit from 16 to 17 or 18?

Maybe because a lot of kids are getting jobs at 16? I would have loved a car at 16 as I walked/biked 2 miles (each way) to my job after school.

So our State Government has nothing better to do than waste tax dollars creating silly new laws? Score one more for Nanny State! Parents are the ones that should be telling their teenager drivers when they can and cannot be on the road. Looks like a nice way of tying up the courts not to mention a waste of time for the cops. Lunacy!

Great now they will be pulling over all teens and claiming they thought they were new to driving. More bogus laws.

My kid just got her license today. Our plan was to have her carpool with two of her friends to high school. Now, we can do this until Feb. So with this new law, essentially it's taken one kid out of the car and put them in another car. It's going to increase the number of cars on the road and decrease carpooling. Not sure this law is protecting anybody.

Personally the LESS any government does, the happier most people would be. We're adults, I'm pretty sure we can run our own lives and make our own decisions. As long as we're also held accountable for the results of our actions.

How about making a law that says people named Fran can't drive after midnight? Or how about if they even think the name Fran they will be arrested? We don't really need a governor or legislature if this is the silly kind of laws they are going to enact. I am thinking we should outlaw winter. That would be ok by me.

Very good point! I think it must be the work of the gas companies lobbists to increase number of cars using gas. It's the parents responsiblity to teach, train, nuture thier offspring. However, some should never have offspring.

It doesn't matter if your teen is active or not. What you should be asking yourself is "are 16 year olds mature enough to handle the responibility of driving?" and the answer is no.

Raise the age, buy them a good bike and let them get some exercize.
