Malaysian Muslims warned not to celebrate Valentine's Day

Full story: asiancorrespondent.com

Every year, just days before Valentine’s Day is celebrated in Malaysia and other parts of the world, Muslim authorities would forewarned Malaysian Muslims to refrain from commemorating the ministry of St. Valentine.

Malaysian Muslim clerics argued that Valentine’s Day was first and foremost, a Christian celebration and secondly, a day of promiscuity and when immoral activities are rampant.

This year is no different ...

from asiancorrespondent:

"In the text of a Friday prayer sermon provided by the Department of Islamic Development of Malaysia entitled 'Beware of the Valentine trap', it said it is wrong for a Muslim to ask someone to be his or her 'Valentine' as it is an act against the Islamic faith and would invoke the wrath of Allan SWT.

"In another sermon prepared by the Federal Territory Islamic Department, it claimed that February 14 was celebrated to commemorate the victory of the Christian government in an offensive against the Muslim government in Cordoba, Andalusia, which is modern-day Spain ..."

... but not for modern-day muslims livig in the Middle Ages.

Do you send out Eid Cards or celebrate Ramadan? Do you think Christians and Jews should do so?

Good point, BUT!
I have never heard that celebration of any holiday was evil, well except for extremist views on Halloween.

I always tell my Jewish friends 'Happy Hanukkah'.

Have you never sent out Lent or Easter cards?

(St.) Valentine's Day is more about chocolate and lingerie than Christianity; in fact, there is no religious significance to this day.

It is not evil. It is that we see Valentines day as a religious celebration of a Saint.

Actually, some of us who believe it has lost any religious meaning do celebrate it especially among family and as friendship exchanges for the kids.

In Austin we had a number of Jewish Families in the same housing complex and we did share parts of Ramadan and Hanukkah with each other.

In Malaysia were there is no real Christian influence, it is odd that anyone would even mention valentines day. Kind of weird. Maybe some Imams just ran out of stuff to discuss.

When was the last time you ever saw a Valentines Day card the mentioned Saint Valentine?
I have never saw one.
Saint Valentine has never been on my mind as I gave my wife an expression of my love.

Valentine Day is about 'Love' to almost every one who celebrates it and has nothing to do with Saint Valentine.

"The day first became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished."

As for me, Christian or not, my wife will receive flowers and a sincere love note.
(But I won't mention Saint Valentine) LOL

Up until I believe 1969 St. Valentine's Day Feb 14 was a Holy Day of Obligation. Outside of Roman Catholics the Religious significance was not there. I suspect the major Christian influenc in Malaysia would have been from Catholic Missionaries and it probably had more religious overtones than in Europe or the USA

The Christian influence in Malaysia is predominately Catholic. Just did some google search quite a few Catholic Cathedrals. I suspect there will still be some mention Feb 14 is Saint Valentine's Day and named for a Catholic Saint.

Another mistake in your beliefs. Valentines Day was never a Holy Day of Obligation. I was Catholic, I know.
As a 12 year student of a Catholic education, St. Valentine was always brought up during Valentine Day. But secular America sees it only as a day to celebrate love.

I was Catholic also. We had to go to Church on Feb 14 and call it Saint Valentines day, not Valentines day.

OOOps just noticed when trying to verify this. It was a Feast Day. I guess the Diocese of Hartford got carried away making us attend mass on Feb 14

Top of this next link:

The Catholic Church has dropped St. Valentine's Day from the Roman calendar of official, worldwide feasts. But the holiday has both Roman and Catholic roots.

OOOps?:)
Now you have it.
Saint Valentine has went the way of Saint Patrick.
And as you know a 'Fest Day' is a long way short of a 'Holy Day of Obligation'.

So you to were Catholic. Also a Buddhist. And now a Muslim.
You have been on a long search for god.

Love should be something to unite us, not a devise to separate us.

Anyway, to close the subject, at least for me, the world would be a better place if we started out with everyone dedicating a day towards love.

I've never seen a religion so hell bent on murdering the soul as well as the body like Islam. Everything harmless and fun is forbidden. Everything cruel and damaging is sanctioned. f.Islam.

It's typical of when Muslims gain a majority they must bully everyone into following an Islamic lifestyle.

There is no true freedom and liberty when Islam rules.

Those people should be free to celebrate St Valentine's day anyway they choose.

they are free to do so. But are being told by some of the Imams it is a sin to do so. Would a Rabbi have the right to tell his congregation it is a sin to pig out at a roast pig BBQ. Would a Nevada Christian minister have the right to tell his congregation it is sinful to go to any of the Houses of Prostitution in Nevada?

The Shi'i and Sufi do and erect shrines to them.

The point actually was that most Christians in Malaysia are Catholic and as such it is still called St Valentines there.

No it wasn't, the point was that it was telling MUSLIMS not to send cards and flowers on St. Valentine's day because it is unIslamic.

True

In my round about way I was trying to say it is a Catholic Holiday and as such should not be celebrated or recognized in any form.

I don't, but I am all for the freedom to do so should I wish to without the threat of execution or whatever the Malaysian government is offering.

Daily Horoscope for June 2

Libra

It's one of those difficult days when anything can and will happen. Someone you were relying on might let you down, plans could be changed at the eleventh hour or a machine could go on the blink. To make matters worse, your energy levels are very erratic, so you feel full of beans one minute and ready to go to sleep the next. Don't make the situation worse by eating foods that give you a high followed by a slump.
