Bush praises Mexican Americans at Cinco de Mayo dinner

President Bush wished a gathering of dinner guests a "Feliz Cinco de Maya" Monday in his final White House celebration of the Mexican holiday -- slightly erring in his Spanish, but serving up a reminder of how ...

Interesting comment Diogenes, but the Literary Wording is not the logical point your name sake would be Making. Alas, I must Mark it to your hoping to speak to the Mass of Web Based Mentality, who have to be written to in such terms-( not your fault , and a good approach). I agree with much of that- the Big problem now though, is that it is too late to stop. Too many Illegals came , were granted Amnisty in the Past and Even more followed, had Anchor Children and Changed the Dynamic to that , in a Polotical sense. It is too Bad too. I see what they turned Mexico and most other South of the Borders into with their Liberal Polotic, and Culture- they will do the same here , and already are doing so.

At least do a Wickepedia search to prevent you from broadcasting your ignorance.

By the tone of your letter it is doubtful that you will be "caught" in Mexico at anytime. However, one correction on your historical insight. Mexico's independence from Spain is celebrated on Sept. 16. The year was 1821. 5th of May (cinco de mayo) was another episode of foreign encroachment of Mexican territory by the French in which the europeans were defeated in the battle of Puebla in the 1860s.

We all know who was the principal perpetrator in this early part of Mexican history. And anybody wonders why there are so many spanish speakers in the USA?

Hey ignoriser, screw you, and do some research before opening your pie hole. Cinco de Mayo has nothing to do with Mexican independence from Spain. It conmemorates a Mexican military victory against an invading French army, forty-one years after Mexico's independence from Spain.

Whether you like or not, Mexico is part of America. Ditto for Canada. And yes, cinco de mayo has a lot to do with "American' history in as much as the Civil War of the 1863 and the Battle of 1812. History is a story of development of countries, nations and continents...and Mexico, the last I checked on the world map, was still included in the North American continent.

I can absolutely understand why this day would be celebrated in Mexico, but why here? I don't go around waving a Canadian flag in the U.S. on Canada Day, or any other time, for that matter.

You uninformed clown. Cinco de Mayo celebrates nothing of the sort.

It celebrates driving the French out of one town in Mexico: Pueblo.

The French returned soon after and ruled Mexico with the help of the Hapsburgs.

Mexican independance from Spain was achieved in 1810. Cinco de Mayo happened 52 years later.

Thus the educational level of our anti-immigrant, anti-Mexican citizens.

The future of our country depends on our knowledge of our neighbors and how they infleunce us...especially when they stream across our borders.

Read a book. It might do you good.

Why do we celebrate St. Patrick's Day in America?

I see plenty of German flags during Oktoberfest.

I see plenty of Italian flags waving around during Columbus Day!!

There are all days where Americans can get together to drink imported beer and eat food.

Well, I don't know you personally, so I can't say what you would do. But I have been in England, Spain, France, and Ghana on various 4ths of July and I can assure you that Americans in those countries do celebrate American Independence Day. And what's more, those countries don't seem to get their briefs all in a bundle about it either.

First of all you should know that they were not fighting the Spanish in this battle...they were fighting the FRENCH...so get your info straight before you start talking trash. And if you must know Americans were involved later on in the fight against the French

Cinco de Mayo is actually the commemoration of the start of the Mexican war for independence from France, not Spain. Mexico was already independant from Spain, but France invaded to try to get a hold of all the natural resources that could be found on this side of the world. France couldn't take on the US, so they went for the weaker Mexico. Anyway, it is hilarious that there is so much promotion of the Cinco de Mayo holiday. Nobody here even knows what it is. Any excuse to drink. Americans don't want the Mexicans here, but we'll take their holiday!

The Irish immigrants brought St. Patrick's Day with them. It was originally the feast day of the saint who brough Christianity to Ireland. The rest of American turned it into a stereotypical day of Irish drunkenness. It is the only holiday in America I can think of where the stereotype has replaced the original intent of the day.
