Counting Kaberle’s full salary for the season, the Canadiens have four veterans now earning a total of almost $22 million a season in Brian Gionta, Mike Cammalleri, Scott Gomez and Kaberle. Together, they have 14 goals this season. We have no quarrel with Gionta, who gives you everything he has on every shift and has eight of those goals – but when you have nearly half your salary mass tied up in four players who aren’t exactly tearing up the league, you have a problem, especially when you have a raft of young free agents to sign next summer.
