"Let’s get the most obvious part of this out of the way now: the head coach of the Montreal Canadiens has to speak French. There simply is no other way. Imagine the Toronto Maple Leafs with a unilingual francophone behind the bench: it would never happen. True, the Canadiens had unilingual anglo coaches in the past, but that was the past – before the 24-hour news cycle, before live video streaming of the coach’s press conference, before every word was parsed in the Twitterverse almost before they could be uttered. Pierre Gauthier should have known this. He’s a francophone and a Montrealer. Understanding this market should be atop his list of job qualifications: That he plainly does not understand this market is one more indication, if any were needed, that he is simply not up to the job." THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT IS WRONG IN QUEBEC. THE FRENCH ARE JUST A RETARDED, BRAIN DEAD CLAN OF DICKHEADS IN QUEBEC. THE "BEST GUY FOR THE JOB" MEANS NOTHING TO THESE PEOPLE. TODD IS RIGHT THAT GAUTHIER NEEDS TO BE FIRED BUT HIS REASONING IS SO DEFECTIVE IT BOGGLES THE HUMAN BRAIN. THE FACT THAT THE FRENCH HERE DO NOT GET THIS IS JUST MOOT AT THIS POINT BECAUSE TODD HAS INFLAMED AN ALREADY HORRIBLY HANDLED SITUATION. THEE ISSUE IS THAT CUNNEYWORTH, IN 5+ YEARS WITH TWO DIFFERENT COACHING STAFFS WAS AND IS COMPLETELY INCOMPETENT, AND AS MUCH SO AS JACQUES MARTIN WAS AND THAT HE HEAS ZERO POSITIVE CONTRIBUTIONS TO WINNING THAT WE KNOW OF. THE LANGUAGE ISSUE HAS ZERO FUCKING PLACE IN THE GAME OF HOCKEY AND FURTHERMORE, JACK TODD AND THE REST OF THE ENGLISH AND FRENCH PREWSS IN MONTREAL ARE COMPLETELY FUCKING OUT TO LUNCH AND FOR 20+ YEARS NOW, HAVE BEEN DIRECTLY CONTRIBUTING TO THE DOWNFALL OF THIS BROKEN BUSINESS. FOR 20+ YEARS NOW THIS FUCKING TEAM HAS NEEDED ONLY TWO THINGS AND FOR 20+ YEARS NOW BOTH THE FRENCH AND ENGLISH PRESS HAVE CONTINUOSULY GOT IT WRONG. FORWARDS THAT ARE BIG UP THE MIDDLE OF THE ICE, ANDN THAT CAN SCORE REGULARLY AND DO JUST THATAND A COACH WHO HAS AT THE VERY LEAST AND ABUNDANCE OF EMOTION AND BALLS AND IS NOT A PUSSY WHEN IT COMES TO USING THEM!!! CUNNEYWORTH JUST DOES NOT BELONG AND NOT ONE OF THE REASNS HE DOES NOT HAS ANYTHING AT ALL TO DO WIHT WHAT LANGUAGE HE SPEAKS!!!

I would agree that the language issue should not have anything to do with hockey. BUT we are talking about hockey in Quebec which for the last 30 years ...is the province that some french loyalists have been fighting to separate from the rest of Canada. You could debate all you want, at the end of the day you must have a french speaking coach in Montreal no matter what. Even if the team wins under Cunneyworth, the issue will not go away and this is the reality we live with in this province. Therefore we need to operate within that limitation. The issue also creates a bigger problem which is that the team cannot attract any big names to come here and play because of the bullshit that goes on in this city with the french language and media coverage and so on. That is why Gainey and Gauthier handicapped this team by signing all the vertically challenged smurfs and overpaying them to come here. The Solution is to hire the best available coach who could speak french, fire Gauthier to start fresh with a new management team ( Pierre MaGuire is my pick to replace Gauthier) and slowly start to rebuild with good draft picks because it's hard to get free agents here....then maybe the team could challenge for a cup 4-5 years from now. There is nothing they can do in the next 2-3 years because they are stuck with big contracts.

WTF...Pierre Maguire Lol...Pierre MaGuire can barely hold a microphone let alone run a club like this.
Look times change...and the thinking of this organization needs to change with it.
Molson needs to let all fans know that he is going to pick the best coach whether its english or french and thats that.
Also let the players in the league know that he's the boss...
Jesus's who owns the team????? I guess when you pay 550million for something you dont really own it.
Look the separatists dont have much to hang onto...so Molson needs to separate this team from those whinny bastards and bring some glory back to the red white and blue........ And like I said...no fan will boycott this team...No ticket holder will boycott this team..
Who cares if the french issues dont go away........nobody will care if there winning and have great players...
And there is NO WAY this team will win a cup ever again with beleifs and ideas that this team needs a french coach, G.M and players.... NO WAY....Mark this day....NO way.
What if the rest of the english speaking provinces/states said no to any french speaking players. Where would all the players play??? Would they all manage to somehow play for Montreal??? NO....
These people with these thoughts need to pull their head out of their a*s and respect all people...

You may be right in your core thinking but this is Quebec, the province with the separatist movement if you remember. Unfortunately here language is more important than hockey. The team has won with french speaking coaches here dude....Jacques Demers, Scotty Bowman, Jean Perron and we had a guy by the name of Claude Julien who was great until the idiot Gainey fired the guy to bring in the other idiot Carrboneau. McGuire know more about hockey and the NHL than most anyone right now. He would be a great GM and at the least deserves a shot.

Gauthier said today that there waiting to see what happens during their next 11 out 15 home games and decide if their selling or buying...
Who are they going to sell??? They cant get rid of Price, subban, paccioretty,or plekanecs.....
So whos left...the smurfs... Nobody will take them!!!!
And he is going to wait another 15 games before he does anything!!!! At the least he should cut Gomez and Gionta and give them away or send them down and bring up two forwards and give them a chance....
Look...theres only 3 french speaking players on the team ( I think) so you dont see the fans pissing on the floor..
It comes down to this....If the fans want a winner in Montreal they have to forget about the language completely. It is 2012 isnt it....I bet a grade 12 class could figure it out. 1. Have a french speaking team spokesman do a debrief after every game. There one idea..
To have a french speaking coach would be a bonus and I agree with that....but there isnt anyone good at the moment to take the job.....
Plus Maguire has moved to the states to be closer to his family and do more work for Verizon.....I am not sure he is available.
If they did take him its another 3 year trial.... This team needs a veteran GM...
The real sad thing is Molson as owner needs to show some leadership here......There seems to be no plan in place and there going to go with..."lets just see what happens" attitude....
As far as fans go...Montreal was tops when it came to ticket sales....beat toronto by a couple 100K.... Theres no worry about ticket sales or money.
Problem here is no leadership,no plan, no future and aslong as Molson lets Quebec hold him hostage, he and the fans will go many more years without victory.
Because of the latest childish crap to come out of quebec nobody in their right mind will want to come here. Players have stated Montreal is a great city.....not to play, but to party in!!! No good coaches, players, GM's.... Thanks Quebec...You Just Fu*ked everybody else!!!!

If Pierre Macguire became Gm , I would never cheer for the Habs again , as long as i lived . The man is a moron who has no business even being in the business of hockey .

Labatts, i agree with you on most points.....but I don't think the quebec fans can forget about the language issue....it's simply a matter that is bigger than hockey in this province..unfortunately.

I had to watch all his games on mute because i couldn't stand listening to his comments .he was wrong 90% of the time in every call i saw him make . It got to a point that i had to watch the games he was a part of on mute , just because i couldn't stand listening to his b.s . Just my opinion .There's also the fact that he has never been a Gm or coach in the Nhl , which gives him no experience and to throw a guy with no experience into the Montreal organization would just be ludacris .

I'm cheering for Price tonight, because if in any way HALAK shows him up...
& if you can believe me when I say this....
Things will get so much worse for this team IMMEDIATELY, that I do not think there are enough words in the English Language to describe just how bad it will be.
This is a mist win game for the Habs but by leaps and bounds it is far far far far far more important for Price.
If he;s weak in any way, it'll be the beginning of the End for him in Montreal.

Another silly comment Spart. You don't get it. The Canadiens had a two game winning streak by beating two bad teams...Winnipeg and Tampa Bay. Lets see what they do against the big boys....Blues(loss), Bruins, Washington and Rangers coming up. This is a bad team, with bad management, and disinterested players that do not care. Its about the players, its a small team in a tough league filled with big players. Its not about one or two individual players?. Look what happened in St Louis when Hitchcock took over the team?. The players have all given up no matter what they say. Gionta, Cammilerri, Desharmais, Gomez, Plekanec...none of these core guys are over 5'11" and 3 of them are not even 5'8" and they are all guys who play down the middle. No way this team makes the playoffs in any year in the Eastern conference...and if they do its because they need a goalie that is at the top of his game every single nite. No freaken way.

i get it a lot better than you know. and I respect your right to an opinion I will let it play itself out and wear you down slowly until you see it for yourself. knock yourself out I do not see this game the same way you do and that much is clear so I agree to disagree with you and this is not personal, I just do in fact get it a lot better than you know. chalk it up to being 49 going on 50 and having watched the last 21 years of Habs games very closely!

I am 48 going on 49 in about a week so I know what you are saying. The problem is that you are an arrogant dick who really has no respect for anybody else's opinion here Spart because somehow you think you are gods gift to hockey but that is ok because that is how you are. So you wont get my respect even if I do agree with you which is actually a lot of the time....except when it comes to Price and you get really emotional. Funny that you are the only person who does not think very highly of Price. The truth is he should hurry up and get out of Montreal so he can really have success with a decent team in front of him..ta ta

Cant really comment on the last two games as I have been away. Looking at their upcoming apponents, it doesnt look that promising. Gauthier said he was going to wait and see what happens....but I think the writing is on the wall.
Of course I dont know what team is shopping their center's but it goes to say this team needs two very good ones.
This has been said so many times that I hate to say it or hear it.
Gauthier needs to make adjustments...I think we can agree that there not cup bound this year, so he should make some adjustments, even if there not huge. I would start by sending Subban down for 2 weeks to get his game back... I would put Gomez on the market and ask nothing in return. And I would start rebuilding this team with the understanding that know one gets drafted or traded for under 6'1. I wouldnt give the team away...make small trades to better the team without the huge contract. There is a reason why toronto is in sixth place... Burke did it slowly and traded and went through alot of players to get this team he has today.
Everyone has their opinions, right or wrong we all want the same thing....I just wished we knew what Gauthier or Molson wanted..... Its so tight liped its maddening.

You have good points. The GM needs to be a hockey person and a business man all at the same time. I don't think there is a market for Gionta or Gomez so you are tied to those contracts. There might be a market for Camillerri and Plekanec somewhere else so I would try to get them out of here because they are over 11 Million per year and Smurfs. Get some size on the team from average players and let the kids play without signing any more superstar salaries and see where it gets you in the next few years. It can't get any worse so let the kids play and sign some guys for under 1.5M if you can. Markov should be let go so his salary doesn't go against the Cap hit. Consider the Markov salary a sunk cost and move on in order to have some money. I the team manages to get in the playoffs in the next few years they might have the funds for a player to make a difference even for the playoff run. It's a mess, there are not many options?
